Love this controller, ive had it since about a week after launch. And i love it. However i have have medium sized hands and can confirm if you have smaller hands this is not a easy controller to handle. But if you got medium to big hands this is kinda between an xbox one controller and a nintendo snes controler a little thicker

  • +4

Fantastic controller. Use it with my Switch, and iPad

  • Is this a good option to play games on Nvidia Shield pro? I am not looking to buy a dedicated gaming console, just wondering if this will do the job for 7 year old with shield pro??

    • +1

It should be as it's Bluetooth

    • Absolutely, I have 2 of these with my shield pro.

  • +1

What's this controller for? Your Can play PC games with it?

    • +3

Works with consoles too. I use it for the Nintendo switch

    • +1

Yep, I use it for playing Steam games as well as my Switch.

Does it work on switch, Xbox series and ps5, and is it easy to pair between? Thanks.

    • +4

      Yes, no, no.

Works only on Switch, Mac, PC and Android. In a pinch, it also works as a wired controller with the included UAB cable.

      • Thanks

  • +3

It's a great controller, but I haven't been using it since upgrading to the 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth - it's simply better.

Solid Player 2 controller though, the girlfriend has inherited it.

    • What makes the newer one better?

      • +5

        In no particular order:

        • Comes with a docking station for easy charging
        • Can wake the switch from sleep by shaking the controller
        • Can be toggled to wireless mode - Comes with a USB dongle for 2.4GHz wireless connection to PC + anything else that supports it
        • Has extra paddle buttons on the back that can be customised My bad, the Pro 2 has this too
        • Has "Hall effect" sticks, which are apparently drift-proof

        Personal opinion points:

        • I think the feel of the ultimate controller is better and the stick locations are better, though the 8BitDo Pro 2 is obviously meant to be a throwback to the SNES controller and the ultimate is meant to be a more conventional controller style
        • +1

I own neither and am looking to get one or both. My favourite controller of all time is the first PS dual shock and never really liked the Xbox ones, mostly because of the shitty dpads on the Xbox ones and personally just preferred the grip of the wings on the PS ones.

Based on that, do you think the pro2 would be better than the ultimate for me, or do U think that these are sufficiently different from the source material that it's worth giving the ultimate a chance?

        • Picked the 8BitDo Ultimate up from Amazon as a preorder on your recommendation. Thanks!

          • +1

            @CrawlB4uBall: Stupid bot blocking Amazon.

            What's the difference between

8Bitdo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller with Charging Dock, Bluetooth Controller for Switch and Windows (Black) - $100.04
8BitDo Ultimate Wireless 2.4g Controller with Charging Dock, 2.4g Controller for Windows, Android & Raspberry Pi (Black) $85.02

Wanting to use on Switch and PC.

            • @2stroksmokr: I dunno mate. I went with the $85 one. From the description it seems the $100 one is bluetooth and 2.4g, the $85 is 2.4g only?

Mine will be used on my PC only.

          • +1

@CrawlB4uBall: Glad I could help :) Make sure it's the right version for your needs! There is a bluetooth+wireless version, and a wireless-only version.

Edit: Ah, just seen your comment - didn't show before I posted. Yup, the wireless-only version is perfect for PC-only gaming :)

  • Is this a good option for Steam Link on my Sony Android TV? Very occasional use
The 8BitDo SN30 Pro+ is on a compatible list but not this

    • +2

Assuming the TV has Bluetooth it'll work fine.

    • +1

This is what I use it for - Sony android 9 OLED. Also on the iPad - connected it via Settings - Accessibility - Switch Control - Switches - Bluetooth devices, as I read that can avoid laggy controls.

    • Not really. I can’t speak to steam link exactly but I use it on my steam deck and steam deck OS doesn’t recognise the back buttons for extra use which is a shame.

  • +1

Good controller. Just remember to go into the app and add a few points of dead zone to the paddle triggers. Without it, they're far too sensitive.

  • +1

    Cannot see price

    Cannot

    See

    Price

  • It's showing up as $75?

  • Do i just have to chat with Amazon to get them to price match?

None of the jbs near me have any stock

    • I can find the 8bitdo ultimate wired for $59.95

  • Looks like they've removed the price or pulled the product on the gray version.
    Hopefully Amazon updates it soon!

  • +3

Looks like they pulled the grey, then discounted the black version to $59

  • how is the dpad? clicky? or gross and mushy like the xbox/ps controllers?

    • I find it a bit mushy, but I still like using it. It's comfortable to hold.

    • I like it, reminds me of SNES dpad

  • Now I feel when Dual Sense was on sale for $65 is a steal.

  • +1
  • They're price matching JB

  • +1

please hurry just buy this ask questions later and thank later

  • +1

Been waiting 3 months for this to finally go cheap again. Thanks for posting!

  • +1

Thanks, ordered 2 so we never have to fight over who gets the good controller again!

  • +1

Great controller!!!! Use it on pc, switch, Apple TV, mac and chromecast and sometimes fire tv!!!!

    • +1

      so it works for AppleTV?!

    • Bought. What is the best setting for the Apple TV 4K. There are several switches on the back. I did a quick google search and there were mentions of latency issues. What is the best setting in your experience?

  • I also use this controller for PC gaming. Very comfortable and easy to use. Replaced my PS4 controller when the joysticks fell apart!.
If only Dbrand did decals for it.

  • Is it pronounced 8-bit-dough or 8-bit-doo?

    • Everyone says dough, but it's 8-bit-doo in my head.

      • Brother in-law works in retail. He says it's 8-bit-doo.

    • Someone asked them on twitter once and they replied it is doo like Scooby Doo

  • Jb has it at 89 in store.

    • It should scan at $59 or just show them their site.

  • +1

Love this controller. Use it with my Switch, GoogleTV, PC and Batocera Box.

  • Thanks OP just got for $49 delivered with JB Perks

    • Nice. My last $10 perks was in Jan… No stock for me any ways :(

      • Same. I created a new account and was able to relink my existing phone number

  • Easily one of the best controllers out there apart from the newer one from 8Bitdo (with the charging dock). Excellent value. Works with virtually all the devices and the buttons/sticks are fantastic.

  • +2

Good deal. I'm going with JB as the red button SNESy ones is by far the hippest.

    • +1

Amazon has now matched the 'G Classic Edition'

  • Unless I missed it listed in the specs - does this have rumble/vibration too like the Switch Pro Controller?

    • +1

8BitDo Ultimate Software now on PC, Android and iOS. Ultimate Software gives you elite control over every piece of your controller - now on Android and iOS. Customize button mapping, adjust stick & trigger sensitivity, vibration control and create macros with any button combination. Create controller profiles and switch between them at any time with the custom profile switch.¹

    • +2

      Yes, and works well.

  • Thanks OP, ordered one for my gaming PC! I'm using a Nintendo Switch Pro controller to play Hogwarts Legacy on my PC but has to be repaired every time I boot into Windows 10 PC via bluetooth.

  • Would this work on an Amiga 500 mini?

    • Wired, certainly could.

    • Also works wirelessly on the mini with the 8bitdo dongle that you can buy separately.

  • Thanks, just ordered one in classic Nintendo colours.

    • Thanks, updated with 'G Classic' as Amazon just dropped the price.

  • Apparently the PS2 controller didn't have obvious stick drift issues because it's recalibrated when powered on - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2uyeBfFYp8

Is there a reason why this isn't standard practice in the industry? Planned obsolescence is the only thing I can think of.

  • Noice! I was just looking at these a couple of days ago for retro gaming on Nvidia Shield.

  • Not hall effect

  • Anyone tried both the Nintendo Switch Pro controller and this before? Which is the better controller for Switch?

    • +4

I think it's hard to beat the Pro controller for functionality e.g. power on console and Amiibo support.

      • +3

In terms of price and flexibility this is MUCH better than a pro controller.

        • +1

My thoughts are this is better if you are using it for games that works better with the D-pad(maybe Super Mario/Street fighter type of games). For the Switch Pro, they are better for games that requires the use of the stick purely due to the positioning of the D-pad vs the stick. The Switch Pro also looks more comfortable if gaming for a longer period. But I am just guessing.. not sure if it is true..

    • +7

      In purely objective terms:

Switch Pro Controller has roughly double the battery life, HD rumble, can scan amiibo, and wake the Switch remotely.

8bitdo Pro 2 has a better D-pad, 2 back buttons, can quickly switch between different remapped controls for different games using profiles (perfect for Goldeneye64), and you can pair it to multiple devices by moving the switch on the back (D-input, X-input, Switch, and Android).

I've got both, but in my subjective experience, I almost exclusively use the Switch Pro Controller for the Switch. I only use the 8bitdo Pro 2 for a tiny handful of Switch games (that use the D-pad as the main control option), and otherwise only use it as a PC controller.

  • 8BitDo. And also has analog triggers you can configure for various driving games.

  • Good controller. Seems to be compatible with everything. Something about the placement of the trigger buttons feels a little off though. And must say I have a little difficulty pulling out moves in 2D fighters on that d-pad. You seem to have to snap the moves really quick instead of just do the motion. Not a huge fan of it. Actually I'm not a huge fan of the d-pad in general. Maybe theres some mods I can do to make it better, like in the old days with the psp.

  • Related… The ABXY labels really 💩 me. I'm so used to the controller format on my PC and PS then whenever I happen to glance at this even slightly, it throws me off. I had to cover the labels up.

  • No stock in Launy…

  • Extra $10 off from JB if you received a perks voucher this morning.

  • +2

Not the biggest fan of this controller. Buttons are a smidge sticky for me and it’s not as comfortable as a standard Xbox controller. And steam deck doesn’t recognise the back buttons in its OS so you can’t customise them.

But battery life is excellent and it seamlessly connects to my iPad, steam deck and PC instantly through the different profile buttons. So that’s a plus.

I consider it a ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’ kinda controller, good for a versatile one for sure, but I use my Xbox controller nowadays cause my hands don’t hurt after extended playing sessions compared to this 8bitdo

    • Thanks @Kayrhcp for your comments comparing it with Xbox controller. I was about to pull the trigger :-)

      • Hey! Glad I could help!

    • Thanks, I'll keep using my Xbox controller then.

      • Yeah, I’m in my early 30s and essentially every controller makes my hands feel tired nowadays except the Xbox one. I really like the ergonomics of it far above this 8bitdo.
Not that 8bitdo’s is super bad, but the flat face doesn’t do it any favours compared to Xbox, which contours a hand grip really nicely.

        • I just ordered a Xbox bluetooth controller from Amazon for iPad gaming. Only $65 when I chose from "New and used" prices and "Like New" which is the best condition.
Recent iPadOS 16 update added compatibility and support for many consoles controllers (Switch Joycon, Xbox core, Dualshock 4 etc).

My thinking was console controllers will be better designed (ergonomics) and built to last since they need to be on a high level for their expensive consoles.
When researching, the only "officially Apple supported" 8bitdo's were the wireless ones which end up costing around the same amount ($50 to $70), so I felt like I was getting better value with a console controller.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: Sounds like a good move imo. Price being the same, I’d pick an Xbox one over an 8bitdo.

            • @Kayrhcp: Yeah arrived today. Reviews are pretty positive regarding the design and quality.
But I have to say the Xbox core controller is made from pretty hard and rough cheap feeling plastic (the rock hard type, not smooth or soft) at least worse than I expected.
I remember using a Playstation controller once, and that felt much higher quality in terms of finish. It was smooth and much better feeling.

Joysticks, buttons and triggers on this Xbox feel good though. They also use hall effect sensors for the triggers (same with Playstation) which I am pretty sure none of the 8bitdo's have.

Main reason I went with console controller is bluetooth latency. Someone on reddit tested a bunch and showed the latency (input lag) levels. Between Xbox vs PS. The best was DualShock 4 V2 with Bluetooth (2.8ms). Second was Xbox core (Xbox one) Wired/Bluetooth (6.9ms). Weirdly Dualshock 4 V2 when wired had more lag than with Bluetooth connection (10ms).
              Link: https://external-preview.redd.it/rum4H5-JbHVIM3ZNnW-lYAT32_S…

I just assumed input lag was important for console controllers so they would have better designed it for that inside as well.

  • This is the perfect controller if you have mac min/studio m1/m2 and also play windows game in parallels 18.

  • It looks like all 3 are available again at Amazon. I was pissed I missed the black version yesterday, so I kept checking and have now successfully purchased one. Thanks OP!

    • Thanks, updated deal post.

  • would any places price match jb? like eb games?

    • EB Games should assuming it's in stock (but will be dependent on the employee).

  • I bought this on 30/1/2023 for $89.00 :(

    I love this controller :)

For some reason I have to mash all buttons to sync to my partners Mac. Still unclear where the pair button is.

I've been following this guide with the 'pair' button at the top

    https://manuals.plus/8bitdo/pro-2-bluetooth-gamepadcontrolle…
