  • Sweet!!

You could buy a pretty sweet separates set up for that money which doesn't have tiny speakers physically connected to the turntable and thus guaranteed to introduce unwanted vibrations. And also not taking your whole system down if one component breaks…

    • +1

Yep, the attraction of the all-in-ones is that they are cheap. The sacrifice is sound quality.

Not sure why you would pay this much for objectively worse quality than you could gain with separate components.

    • Just to elaborate, for this money you could, for example get:

      Vintage:

      *70s Technics/Pioneer/Dual/Lenco turntable - $300-500
      *New mid-range cartridge: $250-500
      *70s Sony/Pioneer/Kenwood/Marantz/Sansui/NAD stereo amplifier - $500-1000
*70s speakers (many great options to choose from) - $300-1000

You could easily come away with a killer sounding vintage system for $1500-2000 (or $1k or less if you're prepared to really work hard).

Or new there are lots of excellent options, e.g. a decent Pro-ject turntable, a Yamaha/Cambridge Audio stereo amp and some mid-range speakers could be had for this sort of price.

  • True, but this design caters for the current favoured minimalist ethic….

whoever made this is taking the piss

$3,5k rrp? i do get that some people like a one box solution but most people who have $3.5k to spend on vinyl will hand select a turntable cartridge preamp and integrated amp and speakers…

Or they'll select an all in one if it suits their needs, silly comment pal

  • Is that what the remote looks like on a $3.7k device

  • +2

If you're forking out that amount of money for a turntable, then you care for your vinyl. A moving coil cartridge outputs 0.0001V to 0.0005V, a moving magnet output is around 0.005V, and a ceramic cartridge is putting out around 0.5V.

Ceramic cartridges are not directly comparable - the output of a ceramic cartridges is governed by how far the stylus moves, whereas the induction cartridges' output is affected by the speed of the change, however both types are shifted by the pressure of the side of the record groove.

A moving coil is lighter and offers less resistance - their main drawback is that noise and hiss present in the original tape and mother are more likely to be picked up, though not at a rate greater than a moving magnet such as to disturb all but the most sensitive audiophile.

The main differences are whether you want to reduce the tracking pressures and make the pre-amp do the lifting, or want the convenience of just slipping out a worn stylus and dropping in a new one.

At this price point, I'd be expecting a moving coil cartridge - and as caitsith01 and tonyjx point out, a re-discovery of the 1920's, '30s, '40s… … '902, '00s finding that physically coupling your turntable to the speakers is a very silly idea unless you have the skills and experience of Bang and Olufsen.

This, for me, is one for those who buy their books colour coded by the kilogram…

    • Good explanation.
      Thanks.

    Thanks I bought 5.

Even at a $1000 this would be a tough sell - far better options at this price.
