Come on guys support Gerry 😜

    • +6

I don't see how coming on guys will support Gerry but I'll try

  • Dunno who's worse, Gerry or Jeffy.

    • +9

      Gerry for sure.

      • +3

        For sure.

I mean we all know Bezos is an evil super villian - but Gerry is a grifter, always crying out for govt handouts (he made record profits due to JobKeeper).

        • I can assure you quite a number of small businesses (mainly food) made record profits while on job keeper also, the only difference is they didn't repay the jobkeeper.

Edit: I'll also add, the remainder of the job keeper money that wasn't repaid was controlled by the franchise owners, not Gerry.

          • @filmer: Got a source for that? Either my googlefu is pretty garbage (very likely) or this is an unsubstantiated claim?

Yes he repayed $6.02 million, but as far as I can see there was no explanation specifically cited. In fact he went out of his way to NOT comment on it. Something about him saying "everytime I mentioned jobkeeper I get into trouble". He still "owes" $14.5m.

            • @Shroomlet: If you just add franchise to your searches you will find that the franchise owners have the money.

    • +3

Aussies got a tall poppy syndrome within themself, hence Gerry.

    • Buy from Jeffy!!! God knows the share price needs as much help as it can get! ;)

downgrade this bad boy to 8.2.3 and have a wonderful android tv experience

    • +3

What are the benefits of downgrading?

      • +1

you can use the older verison of the home screen before the ads, runs faster and less issues overall.

i ran ours on 9.1.1 for ages. tried a factory reset and still wasn't happy. went back to 8.2.3 and it's been perfect

    • +3

I got the latest, no issues with the wonderful android tv experience.

      • I think fresh install, 9 might be fine, but when mine upgraded from 8.x to 9, my plex server died, had to set it all back up again, then my remote had HUGE input delay, sometimes completely unresponsive and didn't wake the device from sleep as well as the general OS crashing when trying to do basic things. It was so awful that I unlocked the bootloader, reinstalled 8.x and set up everything from scratch. I am absolutely terrified with updating again.

    • Did you use the files from here? https://florisse.nl/shield/ Are there official downloads from nvidia directly?

  • -1

This is getting a little old… I love mine for the Plex server, but all other streaming apps play better on my native tv OS now. Waiting patiently for the next Shield to drop, very patiently.

    • I'm thinking of getting this for the same reason.

My LG C2 only doesn't play DTS-HD or DV.

Do you think it's worth it for that?

      • No, get a zidoo zx9

        • +1

Does that play Dolby Vision profile 7 (FEL) from ISO/MKV?

          • @2024: nothing can besides the Oppo. It will fallback MEL

            • +2

              @RhythmicJAY28: From Amazon listing:

              will support all popular D Vision profiles ( P4, P5, P7, P8, MEL / FEL )

              https://www.amazon.com.au/Zidoo-Android-Realtek-Supporting-C…

              • @MdMa7: I guess it does now

              • @MdMa7: Well then. Perhaps my quest is complete. I wasn’t that keen for FEL to grab a 203, CA or some clone.

Thanks MdMa7, I rolled over to their forum and found this:

Since the update to v6.2.00, Dolby Vision Profile 7 (and 4) content is now playable from MEL and FEL files in multiple formats as below:
                P7 - BDMV, ISO, MKV, MP4

There are a few more things I want to check out with it, but that does look promising :)

      • The simple answer to your question is yes, but with caveats. I have my shield connected to my 5.1 surround receiver and it plays DTS beautifully. My wife however, likes thing simple. So she uses all the tv apps and the tv plex app, which won't play DTS as its running through our LG C2 then to the receiver. With movie content just ok at the moment, we watch more tv which doesn't come in DTS. So when we do watch a DTS movie only I know to play it through the shield…. It's a hard life.
So depending on your circumstance I probably would look elsewhere if you only have one usage case.

I have my shield connected to my 5.1 surround receiver and it plays DTS beautifully

This is how I use it, and works well. And my other half and kid watch DTS movies without turning on the receiver (the receiver got bypass), and it works, and my TV is Sony.

So she uses all the tv apps and the tv plex app, which won't play DTS as its running through our LG C2 then to the receiver.

Is it because tv having I issue decoding DTS? https://www.videogamer.com/tech/tv/does-lg-c2-support-dts/

I have been using it for years and have yet to find media that it couldn't play.

          • @boomramada: LG tv's don't decode or pass-through DTS. So any DTS content needs to first play from another device into a receiver/soundbar, then to the LG tv.

            • @drycleanonly: I'm not sure about what you got, but

I can play, PLEX(Nvidia Shield) > Receiver (On/Off) > TV without any issues. My receiver has pass-through when OFF, which means when the receiver is off, I can hear audio from my tv, otherwise from the AMP.

Just get a soundbar. DTS is only good for music anyway, ATOM is better for movies, that's why LG prefer to use atoms I guess.

        • Pro tip: disable DTS in the LG plex app and you won’t need to switch to the Shield, or use another device. The server transcodes the audio and seems to leave the video intact. I discovered this last night and it seemed fine with some HDR content too :)

On my setup it transcoded to AAC but atleast it will make it easier for the wife/kids, and when you want that DTS-HD MA, turn on the Shield

I was waiting for the getting old comment, but this is perfectly fine if you after this. It is perfect as a Plex server, I couldn't ask for more.

  • They've roughly been around the $250ish mark for ages. Great as a media/file sever and also as decent games for my 8 yr old son and then my younger 5 year old son when gets into games.

  • +1

Both nVidia and Nintendo NEED to step their game up

Thanks OP, been waiting for it to get to around this level

They just removed the Gamestream feature of this device (ability to stream your PC games to your TV). This is after several updates adding straight onto the homescreen.

    • Wait what?!

Lucky, I don't update, this is literally one of my favourite features of the shield, how can they remove it?

      • +1

I'm pretty sure it's something they're turning off support for on their end. :(

        Me too…

        • Yeah did some googling, hadn't heard about it, but seems they announced it in December last year and a lot of people are unhappy.

Apparently moonlight (a commonly used alternative also won't work after they remove gamestream).

The official way alternative according to Nvidia is to use steamlink mixed reviews but people seem to say it works well once its configured, not sure if Nvidas configuration is the best one but will have to give it a go, then go from there.

    • if someone had disabled updates since Dec, would they still have access to Gamestream?

      • Nope, they're turning off backend support. I don't understand it any deeper than that unfortunately, but I know that there are some alternatives that people are trying to make work.

Is there any benefit of having this over Apple TV with Infuse? Apple TV seems cheaper with better support/apps.

    • If you have a receiver capable of lossless Dolby (and Atmos) and DTS, I don’t think Apple TV bitstreams those.

  • is this the most current Model ?

    • Yes

  • Want an nvidia shield but it's been 4 yrs old. Feel like better to wait for the next model to future proof but dont know when they will be released.?

    • Or how much they'll try sell it for on launch day… following their GPU release model it'll be a $1.5k box that's slightly smaller than a 55" TV, and requires 3-phase power because AI or somesuch.

    • Do you have an 8k TV? If not then you can get a second hand 2017 version for ~$100

    • Not sure what formats it can’t already play? Maybe just 8k, but can’t see that coming mainstream for a long time so not sure why to wait longer. I bought one 6 months ago after waiting a year and I wished I bought it sooner! Much better than the slow Sony android tv experience we put up with for years.

  • Is this worthwhile for my non 4k Sony tv? I got some Sonos gear and want Atmos but the tv doesn't support it, the shield will but am I going to get any other benefit using my old tv with the shield? Alternative is getting a new tv.

    • Pretty sure ya tv would still have to have earc support to get atmos via the shield

  • Cannot recommend these highly enough.
Kodi for NAS-based 4k movies, ad-free youtube clients…. so good.

  • My one stopped playing 4K content on disney or netflix it just crashes, no idea if its been updated or fixed.. but I stopped using it.

  • +3

Removal of gamestream was terribly anti-consumer. I hope the open source solutions come good but jesus christ Nvidia how evil can you be?

    • So u cannot stream games playing on pc to your tv hooked up to shield anymore?
When it still worked, does the gpu on pc needs to be nvidia gpu or it worked for amd gpu as well?

Any other solutions to stream games from pc to tv that supports at least 5.1 audio and 1080p?

      • They took away Nvidia's official solution, which was better than Steam Link. It was Nvidia cards only though. I don't know if Steam Link app does 5.1 but it does do 1080p and works with AMD cards.

  • tempted to get one, how are the emulators for retro games? What controller is best for games?
