Fyi for people whilst much more expensive Vietnam Airlines have nice direct flights too. In post covid world at just over $1k each they still seemed ok vs the same cost to get to Bali though…
We ended up booking them for more comfortable flights and all inclusions albeit even adding inclusions the prices on Vietjet looked very sharp!

    • +3

We are getting a little spoilt for choice now even if you want direct flights from Melbourne to Saigon, Jetstar on some days of the week is direct, Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo and now Vietjet.

We booked for August to September this year for 3 people at $1600 with Bamboo.

Back in the day the only choice for direct was Vietnam airlines and Qantas but Qantas was actually code sharing with Vietnam airlines so you have a Qantas ticket but end up on the Vietnam airlines plane, so I guess this doesnt count.

      • -3

There is no Saigon. Only Ho Chi Minh City. Long live Uncle Ho!

        • hahaha true, but all the locals call it Saigon and even the airport code for Ho Chi Minh city is SGN :-)

  • What are the reviews on Vietjet ?

    • +11

In Vietnam they call it Delay Airline

    • +9

Flown with them many times and never had an issue.

    • +2

      Often delayed.

Not sure if Qantas is any better though.

      • -5

Why is there so much hate for Qantas. I rather be delayed than get on mid air emergency. They are the safest airline for a reason.

        • +5

Yeah but Qantas only good at emergency, but what are the chances of that? Oh wait, they been having quite a few lately. Lol

        • +5

They've lost my bag post covid and heard the same from many others

          • @NudeBinoculars: I wish they would lose my bags. Could compensate from insurance and chuck away old shits. Fingers crossed

        • Isn't there a ton of issues at the moment since they started outsourcing? A recent maydays, Jetstar flight being stuck on tarmac for 7 hours due to issues.

          • -2

@dsar: I don’t care about Jetstar. You get what you pay for. Recent maydays is normal. When you have 100s of flights everyday 365 days a year, some parts might break. The main thing is for everyone to be safe.

            • +5

@unhuman: What? Why would you not care about Jetstar under the Qantas group? If things are going to shit it starts with the bottom?

In addition, if you get what you paid for, how does paying for the premium for an airfare who's then reduces the quality of service by outsourcing baggage handlers?

              • -3

@dsar: Jetstar is budget airline. They are prone to delay. That’s normal. I’m not talking about security. All Australian airline have to follow same security protocol. Jetstar has same safety as Qantas. I don’t fly budget airline that’s why I don’t care.

              • +2

@dsar: Because Jetstar and Qantas, whilst owned by the same parent company, are operated by completely different entities and methods. They're not comparable nor equitable.

            • +1

              @unhuman: " Recent maydays is normal. "

              Please do not normalise this.

This is not ok and should not have happened in the first place.

              • -1

@ddhar: Stop spreading fears. Tell me about one airline that didn’t do any mayday. Machines break. Should have never happened is not science or facts. It’s opinion. The only thing that matters to me is that everyone is safe.

                • +1

@unhuman: I do not equate mayday call as still safe. As passenger, I would be praying, crying, pissing, etc. for my safety. And why would you (or anyone) advocate it's ok for these to happen regularly?

      • +2

        QANTAS seems fine for me.

JetStar on the other hand has been bad. The most recent incident was: all passengers boarded, the plane refused to fly and refused to let the passenger off the plane. Passengers were made to wait 8 hours inside the parked plane before they are told the flight is delay, and that there is no other flight for that day. They must return the next day.

    • +1

Our taxi driver back to the airport in HCMC said, "Vietjet is Delay Air".

    • Domestic: hell to the nah
      International: it's alright
Domestic usually delayed by at least 30 mins due to their super tight flight schedule, slow boarding and airport overcrowd. International is not that bad tbh. However their seats is so packed (28 in-a321, a330 probably 29 in)

  • +4

VJ have the narrowest economy seats flying to Vietnam, followed by Jetstar and with Vietnam Airlines being the best. VJ A330 seat configuration is 3/3/3 in economy (QF fly A330's in a 2/4/2 config) You'll get what you pay for. If it's just to get you there at the cheapest price then VJ may be the go. Note VJ's "new" A330 aircraft are apparently the old Air Asia X aircraft.

  • +1

Would be interesting to be a digital nomad in Vietnam. What is the best way to rent apartments without getting ripped off? What visa would be suitable?

    • +3

Hotels are cheap/easiest, especially as need to leave every 30 days.

Also worth trying out a few areas before settling to see what suits, different vibes between south/central/north.

      • How much for a hotel? Better to book online?

        • From experience Agoda is usually best for Asia.

Decent hotel with breakfast and amenities runs $20-40/night in the main cities.
Can definitely go cheaper further from center, negotiate weekly/monthly rates direct or go more basic depending on needs and budget.

Laundry service is cheap enough not to stress about a washing machine, but keep an eye out that every hotel may not have a fridge. Sim cards and data are cheap if the WIFI isn't great.

    • done it many times, including right now. it's mostly great. Internet is everywhere, but speed and reliability can be an issue. our most recent place in Saigon was $350 AUD a week through AirBNB for a large, modern 1 bedroom in central area.

note that costs have risen here, so it's no longer cheap, but you do get more for your $ than Aus, especially if you live a more Viet life style.

the biggest issue is a lack of visa options. it's a cheap evisa (30 days) or expensive business visa (length and cost varies).

my favourite cities would be Buon Ma Thuot (gf's home town)), Da Nang or Da Lat. The big cities are HCMC or Hanoi, but air quality sucks

  • Has anyone used kiwi.com before?

    • +3

i was about to book and then looked into kiwi and it looks horendous https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/kiwi-com

      • Looks terrible. Everything 1 star

      • I just searched directly with vietjet and the prices are similar for the dates I'm looking at

    • I took a punt with them earlier this year, despite all the negative reviews. Great experience and any questions, flight mods etc get answered within a couple of hours.

      • Anything worth doing in Vietnam? I booked but am thinking of just heading to siem reap after a day in hcm

        • seriously? maybe try googling, there's heaps of stuff

if nothing else, go on a Vespa tour around the city

  • I'm afraid Sep-Nov are the worst time to visit Vietnam due to heavy rain season? Hence the price.

    • +1

Not really, down south it might be but only until October, but up north it is not bad. November is the best month.

    • +3

went there last October, perfect weather, not too hot, not much rain, not too busy

      • Ho Chi Minh City?

    • +1

was there last October. Weather wasn't an issue.

      • Ho Chi Minh City?

        • +1

          both north and south.
The north would be nice and sunny. Not too hot.
The south is of course humid and hot. Watch out for the rain btw because they can be pretty heavy and long lasting. Even though I'm Vietnamese but been in Melbourne for a long while therefore I'm accustomed to heavy rain = not long lasting rain. I was so wrong lol.

          • @trantonz: thanks!
I wonder which city if the best for a family holiday?
I like that Ho Chi Minh has direct flight but Hanoi maybe be more interesting?

            • +1

@maxedin: HCM city is like Sydney. Hanoi would be like Melbourne.
HCM city has more funs. Hanoi is charming.
People in the south are more outgoing compared to people in the north.
For a family I would say go to Hanoi but if you still have some time left, give Saigon a try. You might love it.

            • @maxedin: Bamboo Airways has direct flight from Melbourne to Hanoi btw

            • @maxedin: it really depends on what you want to see and do, but I prefer HCMC.

          • -1

@trantonz: Wouldn't call rain in Saigon long lasting, it's heavy downpour but a few hours max, after that it dries very quickly, unless you're unlucky to be stuck in a typhoon. There're other parts of the country that rain a lot more, there'll be month between June-Aug that it literally rain non stop for 2-3 weeks straight between drizzle and heavy downpour. Rain in Melbourne is nothing to compare against the rest of the world, let alone in those place where annual precipitation is 3000mm+

            • -1

@lgacb08: There is no Saigon. Only Ho Chi Minh City. Long live Uncle Ho!

    • +2

Those are the times you sit in a bar/cafe/restaurant
I've previously found the storms so predictable it barely impacts too.

  • +1

Does anyone know what the “luxury” seat is for an extra $15?

    • Away from the toilet? :P

      • +1

It actually is the toilet seat. No queues.

  • Depending on what days you flight potentially Jetstar price beat too for 10% less

    • Price beat? Is that a new thing for Jetstar?

    • +1

Yes, and more flexibility with the comparable flight, "within the same calendar day if they’re international flights (excluding flights within Asia and flights between Australia and New Zealand)."
      https://www.jetstar.com/au/en/price-beat-guarantee

  • What are the July dates in Melbourne?

  • +1

VJ??? No thanks! I'd rather pay a little bit more flying with Bamboo instead during off peak season. The seats are more comfy & it's much more reliable than this Delay Airline. On top of that, VJ's customer service is terrible.

I'm not sure about how they operate here in Aus. If they do it the same way as in Vietnam then just be prepare to pay extra for their sh*tty scale at the boarding gate even though during checking you have no problem with the weight of your carry-on luggages but then they will be over weight at the boarding gate. If you wanna make complaints, good luck with that.

    • Bamboo were surprisingly good

    • It's up to you to be within the weight restrictions, no?

    • Ah, I see what you're saying, the scales are inaccurate..

  • In VN they called this
    Bikini Airlines
    Delayed Airlines.

You get what you paid for.

    • Why bikini?

      • The hostesses in the ad wear bikinis.. not sure why that's a bad thing

  • I wonder which city is the best for a family holiday?

    • +4

You can't go wrong, Ho Chi Minh city for the hustle & bustle and mekong delta, Hanoi for the old quarter & Sapa/Halong Bay. Central Vietnam for the relaxing resorts. Really recommend taking a Halong Bay trip, even if it's just a day trip.

      • Any recs for anywhere slightly off the beaten track? The big touristy things don't entice me

  • +1

Bought 2 tickets today. Just got a text from kiwi saying flights are booked out and they are cancelling our tickets :(

  • Any cheap flghts from HCM to hanoi? I already booked from the last sale but didn't expect almost 200 to go between the cities!

    • is that return? I think we paid around 1.5 mil VND last time for 1 way

    • 200 seems pretty good id say?

      • Yeh apparently so. Just hoped it was less considering the flights to hcm weren't much more!!

        • $200 return for a 2 hr flight is cheap. I'm sure there are sales that pop up to make them cheaper, similar to how we have sales internally between states if you can book at the right time. But its already super cheap and you would have to be lining up sale periods and getting lucky to get internal flight sales within vietnam

  • I flew them twice last week if it's of any value, they were on time, efficient, organised and cheap. Leg room and seat width felt equal to the air Asia and scoot flights I also took on this trip.

    • Exact equal to AirAsia X. VJ A330s were formerly AirAsia's, retaining the same cabin.

  • anyone done aus->vietnam->cambodia->vietnam->aus?
