Bed Sheets, What Do You Use?

Hi guys,
I need to buy queen sized sheets,
Looking for reccomedations,
There's too much about Thread count, bamboo? Etc.
Been having ads for plenty of bedsheets on Facebook but I don't trust them at all,
Happy to spend the extra $$$ for quality,
Thanks
Morgan

I went to the Sherridan outlet store at the DFO in Homebush, Sydney. My problem was I had a quite tall mattress and in addition to that added a mattress topper. I asked and they had fitted sheets for taller mattresses.
I bought a set of plain white ones. I've been happy with them.
The great thing about plain white is you can add some Napisan to your wash to keep them sparkling.

I have tried heaps of brands, but I think Kmart sheets are actually the best.

Agreed! I really like my Kmart sheets. You have to get their highest quality ones like the ones you linked. Some of the cheaper ones are rubbish.

I hope the fact that they're on clearance doesn't mean they're going to stop selling them!

Also worth measuring the depth of your mattress and make sure that the depth of the fitted sheets will fit your mattress. Many new mattresses, particularly those with a pillow top are deeper than older mattresses and standard sheets don't fit well.

Does it have to be available in Australia?

I highly recommend Akemi, tencel range

I bought this overseas in Asia, Thailand, Malaysia.

It's very very comfortable, everything feels very silky. It's a fair bit more expensive but once you've slept in them, it's impossible to go back to anything else, especially cotten.

  • +1

I vote tencel. Super smooth and easy wash

I use bedsheets that fit my bed.
I'm a bit fancy like that.

  • Whatever is cheapest at kmart

    • +2

Honestly there is a massive difference once you experience quality versus the cheapest. Sleep is something everyone should invest a little bit more on.

  • 1200 thread Ramesus. You wont regret it.

  • The wife won't settle for less than 1000TC 100% cotton.

  • I find it more comfortable to lay on my light comforter/duvet/quilt/doona instead of bed sheets though I haven't tried any of nice brands mentioned here

  • +1

Cotton, high thread count and Sateen weave.

Note not all high thread count are equal. You can get 400 TC which feel much better than cheap nasty 1000TC sheet sets.

My favourite sheet set/doona cover is my Canningvale Mille 1000TC. Thick and smooth Sateen weave 100% cotton. Hard wearing too. Better than my 1200TC Sheridan IMO

Unfortunately Canningvale stopped selling the Mille range and the current 1000TC range isn’t 100% cotton but is still Sateen weave.

Tempted to try it as I like Canningvale products and can always return it. Hotel sheet sets are great but aren’t 100% either.

  • I used to use Sheridan sheets, passed them to my daughter when we got a king bed and they are still going strong.
However……..we now use Linen sheets. From spotlight on special….and we wont sleep on anything else now.
    They just always feel fresh.
( even daughter has bought some lol ).

    Kudos to Doy.
I bought these BAMBOO sheets in silver and indigo from Kogan last Xmas awesome deal.
They are like silk and very flowy, lovely to sleep on, and healthy for Pandas.

    • They are terrible for pandas

I use newspaper as a sheet and a slab of cardboard as a duvet. Pure luxury

  • 400TC Bamboo/cotton blend from Pillow Talk.
    Relatively cheap, maybe 200.
Insanely nice, especially in humid QLD, but also great on cold nights.

GF has not touched her expensive set since.

  • As in fitted sheets? The Kmart 400tc cotton sateen are not bad for the price. The target supima are not bad either.

Quilt cover- linen is my favourite - muji will have them on sale or clearance once in awhile or other brands ikea pottery barn etc Boxing Day or June sales

Thread count is irrelevant. The quality of the cotton matters much more. Bamboo is man made fibre and doesn’t breathe well IMO - just marketing spin rubbish. You must get cotton. Sheridan top end (not the crap they sell at the outlet) is the best local but you pay for it. Internationally some of the best brands are Yves Delorme and Frette - David Jones stocks a limited range of these. A few others I haven’t tried but are at the top end US department stores (Matouk etc). Could be worth shipping to Oz but beware overseas mattress sizes can be different to ours.

Generally you really get what you pay for unfortunately. Quality does last a long time though and is worth saving up for.

I don't see any real concensus here. Can we get a poll?

  • Always 100% cotton, target and myers. 250 thread count or above - higher u go the silkier it gets. Drop into stores and feel the sheets. You can try supima cotton too!

Remem like food, cotton is grown so some seasons the quality will be better due to growing conditions and yes it can be noticeable.

A final word. Look after your sheets by washing them in 30'C water and hanging in sunlight/shade. Don't use fabric softener!

Oh and I've used, vue and heritage from Myers and just the cotton from Target.

In a former life I was a bed linen buyer for a major retailer, and I studied at the Melb College of textiles. Here are my thoughts:
100% cotton is not good. It balls up (pills) which is the fibre breaking down. High thread count cotton feels nice, but doesnt last. It also stays creased, and is often needed to be ironed or steamed. It is also subject to shrinkage and doesnt hold colours well. For summer use, lower thread count is better, as the sheets will be lighter, but this comes at the cost of durability. For winter around 1000 thread count is better, and will resist creasing, but it tends to drape and hang, as the higher the thread count, the thicker it becomes. There are different grades of cotton, with short to long fibres. Long fibres are more expensive.Combed cotton or egyptian cotton are the best and softest types.
Flanelette feels warmer, but it is just tthe cotton fluffed up. Essentially made to pill by brushing. Doesnt last.
Poly Cotton. This is what most bed linen is made off. Contrary to what people think, it is the polyester that holds it together, makes it feel softer and makes it last longer. If at any time you see piling, its the cotton breaking down, not the polyester. The ratio varies a lot. The cotton gives softness, while the polyester gives it that crisp feeling. It is crease resistant, and less likely to shrink. It also retains colours better. a 50/50 mix will be very durable, but doesnt absorb moisture as well, so it may feel hotter. Better quality bed linen is 20/80 Poly cotton. The higher the tread cont, the better, but too much and it becomes too thick. Percale is just a thread count over 220.
Bamboo. Bamboo is always a blend, usually a poly cotton and bamboo blend. Bamboo fibres are rounder, so have a good feel, but you need the cotton for moisture and the poly for strength.
Linen. Linen has always been a staple and gets softer with washing. It is made from flax. But it is more expensive. It doesnt have the stretch of other fabrics. It is usually blended with cotton, but is more expensive.
Wool. Wool is blended with other fibres. It adds durability and is naturally fire resistant.
Silk is expensive and is made from silkworms. It is blended with other fabrics. Most of what we see and think of as silk is actually just a Rayon blend.
Cotton bed linen used to be cheap. The brand names were all poly cotton percale. Then we started promoting cotton as natural, and raised the price. Unless you are buying good quality combed or egyptian cotton with good thread counts, you are just getting seduced by the marketing.
Also, remember that Australian matresses and Doonas are not the same size as in the US or Europe. People often think that they are getting better quality but they find that they don't fit well. This is why.
If you want a decent quality sheet, Target has good quality 50/50 poly cotton and cotton. It will be comfortable and last. Years ago the plain dyed bed sheets were all made for target by Sheridan, and were a 50/50 blend but good quality. I presume that they are now imported but Target has always had good quality control and would test them. If you want better quality, look at Sheridan. If you see Actil, this is the commercial brand of Sheridan, and is what you will usually find in hotels and hospitals. Tends to be white. Just check the labels and see what it it made out of and blended with. Work out if you are a hot sleeper, if you sweat a lot, if the designs and colours will match your decor too.

    • Thanks for the explanation. I’ve got cotton sheets I’ve had for years and I haven’t had them pill, even after many washes.

    • So I should try and find a Target Egyptian cotton/poly 50/50 blend with a high thread count?

I bought bamboo last time coz my bubs clothes were so soft. but now that I know it's all BS…

    • Nice write up…

  • Target Egyptian cotton in whatever thread count you like. Never lets me down.

Personally I prefer "cool" sleeping so can't stand polyester/polyester blend. My first choice is linen or hemp, otherwise lyocell (bamboo/wood fibre) or lyocell/cotton blend or pure cotton. I don't use cotton sheets with a high thread count in summer as I find them too warm. Linen sheets can be scratchy at the beginning but they'll get softer the more you wash them, and they can last for years.

Also I use a fitted sheet to wrap around the mattress and use a flat sheet to wrap around the mattress topper, so I only need to change the flat sheet weekly. The fitted sheet around my mattress only gets changed once a few months as it rarely gets dirty. I learned this from an Ikea catalogue many years ago, here's the video from someone in Sweden explaining how it works: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ruPtJvbk1NI

  • aldi's sheet quite good

I have sheets and duvet covers from Frette. They are an Italian brand and very comfy.

A bit pricey but tbh worth it for something you spend a lot of your life on.

Another option would be Sferra’s Giza 45 sheets. They do take about 8 weeks to come in since they are made to order in Italy so plan ahead.

Absolutely nothing with polyester in it. Cotton, linen or bamboo. Never had cotton pill, maybe because I only buy good quality cotton? The only ones I've had pill are some cheapo ones from Uniqlo (blend I think), they put it on clearance and I can see why.

  • 100% cotton from Target. Never personally been into spending a fortune on bed sheets!
