  • Mine's 2.5 years old, use it 2-3 times a week, still going strong. Love this thing. Won't hesitate to get another when it's time.

    • What are you cooking on there and for is cleanup? I have a pellet smoker but the startup and cleanup deter me quite a bit

      • +1

Usually smoke something on the weekend, grill once or twice during the week, maybe a high temp sear on some sous vide cooked food.

Startup is really simple once you have the hang of it, within about 10-15 minutes it's ready to cook on.

I have a Yoder pellet smoker too, and I'd rather cook on the MB560 100% of the time. They're basically pellet convenience with charcoal flavour.

Grease trap comes out for cleanup every few weeks, and I probably do a more thorough deep clean (takes 15-20 minutes) every 2-3 months. Running a higher temp cook from time to time seems to help too much buildup. I have had 4-5 grease fires in that time, so maybe I should be doing it a little more often - happy to accept responsibility for that!

Has your hopper started peeling that lining yet? Mine has and I don’t know how far rust might be behind that
I love the convenience of gravity fed but the quality doesn’t seem on par with what I’ve seen of Traeger smokers. I’ve been looking at other gravity fed smokers so I’m ready if mine craps the bed at some point but there don’t seem to be many options

Don’t get me wrong I really like it but it feels a little overpriced (I bought mine for $1000) but there are some places in America that sell stainless steel inlets for the hopper and other upgrades that might make it last longer.

I’m not saying don’t buy it, I just want to point out some flaws I know of.

The reverse seared steaks and briskets that have come off this thing are incredible (use soaked wood chunks with wood infused briquettes for massive smoke). I’m really impressed it can get up to 700f too and the fact you could cut down a tree in your backyard and after a while, use wood from that in your smoker is awesome

          • @NuttyGoodness: The firebox walling is designed to deteriorate fairly rapidly, if that's what you mean? It's only there for transportation to hold the firebrick in place before it sets after a few uses.

The build overall feels a bit flimsy, I agree - though the 800 & 1050 do feel somewhat better - and I hope someone releases a higher quality gravity fed eventually! Still, happy to stick with the MB until that happens and mine eventually fails!

        • Made any brisket?

          • @TEER3X: I did a 9kg brisket a few months ago for about 16 hours and it was so good and it barely fit in there. Made pies out of the leftovers that I haven’t been able to beat yet
I tried to a 1kg one in 5 hours last week and it tastes great but was chewier than I’d like

        • Noob question: how's a smoker any different from throwing some pellets in the barbie?

          • @wisdomtooth: Flavour mostly. You'll get a lot more smoke flavour than pellets could. Also charcoal flavour for grilling, using a rotisserie, etc.

And in this case, ease of temperature control - you set it to 110 (for example) and it'll just sit there.

  • love my masterbuilt 800 only other smoker id consider is the traeger timberline XL but there 8k

  • God I want this so bad but Lowe says no

  • How does this compare to pellets? Can you add wood for a particular taste?

  • How does this compare to the Traeger 575?

    • Traeger will be a bit higher quality build. Roughly same cooking area. Otherwise it comes down to pellets vs charcoal. Charcoal will be smokier, will be better at higher temps for grilling & searing.

  • I have an Akorn komado settle from Bunnings for the past 7 years. Works well. No rust.

I am wondering if this uses more charcoal than the komado??

    • I had the Akorn before the MB560. Akorn was super fuel efficient, MB560 uses quite a bit more.

  • Damn, wish it were the MB800
