    90k points for $300 or 120k for $550, isn’t?

    • +4

I read it as $600 for 120K points?

      • Ah right. I thought Qantas fee is one time but it seems it’s annual as well. Sorry usually don’t hold a card for more than a month or 2 ;)

        • +3

just curious, how does that reflect on your credit score or rather, what kind of effect has it on your credit score?

          • +5

@wordsmith: Not sure about them but I churn 2-3 credit cards a year and my Equifax credit score is "excellent".

Does a credit score actually matter? Is a bank going to look at your servicing and say, "you can't afford this loan but you have a good credit score so we'll lend you money" or "you closed too many credit cards in the past three years so we won't approve your home loan despite your income being sufficient to service it"?

          • +3

@wordsmith: Any check on your credit does impact your score but it doesn't take long to bounce back as long as you do all the right things with mortgages, bills etc.

The other consideration is whether you have any significant purchases that you may be making that requires an impeccable credit score (home loan, car loan etc).

If you don't then I don't see an issue with card churning every 3 - 4 months (or possibly less).

          • +2

@wordsmith: Churning cards in Aus doesn’t have any material medium to long term impact as duration of credit is not taken into account in credit score models used here say vs US.
Short term impact - yes slightly negative but it builds back. I get 3-5 cards/year for the 2 of us, so plenty to play around with.
Credit enquires drop out of your credit history after 5 years and closed accounts drop out of after 2 years.

          • +1

@wordsmith: I'm in the same credit churning boat as maverick1 and my current credit score is 858 (excellent)

            • +1

@FeZZa21: Everything is good, til it isn't.

Last month someone was complaining they had been rejected 3X, after flipping cards for years.

              When it happens, it happens.

              • -1

@[Deactivated]: I only got rejected few months back because bank was not going to make money off me lol got accepted at the new bank

              • @[Deactivated]: there is always a rejection or 2 every now and then, That's part and parcel of churning business, nothing to lose sleep about. Take a break for couple of months and try again and always apply for min credit limit. I usually don't venture for premium cards i.e. cards with min 15k/20k limit.

  • +5

    Tempting, also this appears:

Already with Westpac? Sign in and apply to save $100 on your first year card fee

  • Similar to this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/746226 but has more pts

No, both deals have the same number of points on offer.

  • +5

I was hoping for a Westpac deal but this doesn't look that great.

Edit: I'm not sure this is anything but their normal offer?

    • I dont think it’s any different

  • Anyone know how this card insurances compare with say ANZ Black when it comes to overseas travel insurance?

    • +1

Yeah, this can be a mine field. And domestic vs international card hire.
And cards for $300+ fees but still charge an int transaction fee.

It's the wild west out there.

    • +4

I have both a Westpac and ANZ platinum card and looked at both of their policies for going overseas later this year. For ANZ there's no difference between international policies for Black or Platinum cards; for Westpac, Black cardholders get six months covers vs. Platinum cardholders three.

From what I could see, at least for the international side, Westpac's is a generally more generous policy.

Main differences I could see are:

      • Westpac requires you to charge $500 to be eligible, ANZ $250 (probably the main point in ANZ's favour)
      • Westpac have Hospital Cash Allowance of $100 per day up to $15000 vs. ANZ's $75 per day up to $8000.
      • Westpac has accidental death cover for $25000 per dependant vs. ANZ's $1000.
      • Westpac has unlimited funeral expenses vs. ANZ's $25000 per cardholder or spouse.
      • Westpac has up $1000 per week for up to 12 weeks for loss of income (total $12000) vs. ANZ's maximum of $10000, no maximum per week.
      • Westpac has unlimited cancellation cover with an exception for travel agent fees ($500 or 15% of the value of travel arranged by them whichever is lesser). ANZ has a cap of $20000.
      • Westpac have travel delay expense cover that kicks in after six hours for up to $500 per person for meal and accommodation expenses up to $1100 for travel with spouse and\or dependents, ANZ's is up to $3000. (Another point in the ANZ's favour)
      • Westpac's luggage cover is up to $20,000 per person, maximum $30,000 for all travellers covered by the policy vs. ANZ's $12000 per cardholder or spouse. ANZ has lower sub limits for computers, cameras etc. than Westpac's sub limits.
      • Westpac have luggage delay cover for up to $800 per person for a maximum of $1600 for cardholder and covered travellers, vs ANZ's up to $500 after 10 consecutive hours and an additional $1000 after 72 consecutive hours, limit of $1500 per cardholder or spouse.
      • Westpac rental vehicle excess cover is $5500 vs. ANZ's $5000.
      • Westpac's Personal Liability is $2,000,000 vs ANZ's $3,000,000.
      • Westpac's excesses are either $300 or nil, ANZ's are $350 or nil.
      • If you need screening for any preexisting conditions, Westpac will do it online for $45 plus any additional premium, ANZ will do it for $75 plus any additional premium.

Of course, you should check the relevant PDS to make sure the cover is right for you and that you know what is being covered, especially because they can change at any time (Westpac's changed last month for example.)

      • Thank you for the detailed breakdown, douglasac10!

NAB - 120,000 bonus Qantas Points

90,000 bonus points when you spend $3,000 on everyday purchases within the first 60 days of account opening and 30,000 bonus points when you keep your card for over 12 months.
You'll also enjoy a reduced annual card fee (from $395 to $295) for the first year.

    https://www.nab.com.au/personal/credit-cards/qantas-rewards/…

    • Yeah I just got this last week, with a ridiculous limit.
Like 3x any of the other 10 I've had in the past 5 years :/

    • Lower spend, probably a easier and better deal.

    • a much better deal - also NAB pro-rata refund the annual card fee if you cancel early (i.e. as soon as the bonus points hit your QFF account)

    • If you have to keep it for over 12 months, doesn't that mean you need to pay the annual fee twice?

      • Yep. I think we are better off cancelling ASAP then reapply 12 months later

  • +10

    Isn't this one better : https://www.anz.com.au/personal/credit-cards/frequent-flyer/…

    110,000 bonus Qantas Points
$255 back to your new ANZ Frequent Flyer Black card
When you spend $5,000 on eligible purchases in the first 3 months

Works out to be $170 (after the $255 back) for 110k points for the first year.

    • Is there an income requirement?

      • +2

        $75,000 p.a. Minimum income required

    • This is def the best card at the moment for QFF.

      • +4

ANZ is terrible for credit cards, been burnt twice, never again, YMMV

        • It did vary. Very easy sign up!

        • why?

          • @Freestyle: It started as applied for second card within 12 months by mistake, card was refused (which is fair enough), since then they needed multiple documents, calling many times to confirm earnings ( even all documents sent/uploaded), even I am way above the limit, having great Credit score >900 etc. After all this they refused another card again 2 years after so now I am not touching them even with a barge pole… [ all other banks I dealt with - Westpac, AMEX, NAB were great)

            • @radissimo: i see, their rewards card was much better than cba one so i applied for it last week, lets see how it goes

    • +1

That one is better but there's nothing stopping people from doing both. I'm going for the Westpac card while I'm waiting for the 12 month cooldown on my ANZ card to tick over again.

      • +1

I’m on the opposite side of this cycle, waiting for my 12 months since Westpac :)

    • +1

Try asking for a refund of the annual fee. I cancelled my card after 3 months and got the full amount back of $370 ($55 reward program fee was non refundable) because apparently ANZ can't refund on a pro rata basis.

So it was 160k QFF points with $3k spend in the first 3 months for $200 profit lol ($425 fee paid less $255 refund less $370 annual fee refund = $200 profit).

      • Do companies refund annual fee? I thought they didn't once they've allocated points to you.

        • I literally called up and asked nicely without any reason and Westpac refunded my fee. They said it was a one off so I made sure to cancel before the next year.

          • @Murdrum: I want your call script

            • +2

@the fig man: Me: Hi, I was charged the annual fee on my last statement. Could I please have it refunded?

Rep: Let me look into it. Please hold… Ok, we can refund your annual fee. This is a once off.

              • +1

@Murdrum: Did you have to cancel the CC before asking for the refund or did you just ask it without cancelling the card? Also, how much was the annual fee? Have you got other products with Westpac or just the CC?

                Thanks.

                • @bargainerpro: I hadn't closed the card yet. $250 fee. About 2 years go. Just the CC at that time!

        • In my limited experience, NAB will refund no questions asked but pro rated. ANZ do too but only if you asked nicely

    • Way better

  • +2

This is their standard offer and has been available for months. Not a bad churner, I opted for $626 profit on the Altitude points card instead of this though.

    • +1

How did you get rid of the points, I still have 160k Qantas I'm scared to sell, due to the odd person posting they lost them all when Qantas blocked transaction

      • +1

Look there is nothing stopping you. However Qantas can and might stop the transaction and ask for proof of the family relation. And if you get to that point, the game is over and you are looking at being banned from QFF.

        • +1

Exactly and there's the odd anecdote of this occurring, on the other hand, there's OzB folks who have had no issue.

          • +2

@hamwhisperer: I have seen here of plenty of good and clean records, however I myself have had mishaps.
Mum transferred 600k points last year for bookings (Im P and she is Gold, so I have the upper hand for requesting Classic Reward bookings)

It was halted immediately and was emailed to attach supporting documents of an eligible family relation. Sent my birth certificate and away I went.

            • @AircraftFreight: I don't know how people get away with selling them all the time? Seems so risky.

I mean if you can't sell them, theyre not worth alot!

            • @AircraftFreight: What does P vs Gold mean? thanks for this info, I'm re-terrified again. It was hard work messing with that ANZ card for 4 months

              • @hamwhisperer: Qantas Platinum Status versus Qantas Gold Status, Platinum members can request any sale fare to be turned into a classic reward fare.

                • @AircraftFreight: The doco is hard stuff, I wonder how much effort they do to chase it. Esp if brother in law kinda stuff

Worries me, very annoying they create a fuss. - If I recall, buying gift cards on their store is rarely discounted?

      • Different deal. Westpac Altitude card is their own points which you can redeem for annual fee credits (even if you don't pay the fees)… This is not selling Qantas points, I wouldn't touch that !

      • Buy stuff, resell it?

Can you book a flight under someone else's name like Krisflyer?

      • Can't you just buy gift cards with the points? I understand the return isn't as good, but it's better than losing the lot, surely?

  • St George's one is just superior.

    • +3

      Care to explain?

Afaik nothing about St George is superior

  • Just wondering which card daily spender applied for Qantus points. I'm a newbie on this.

  • They’re all the same roughly – 90,000 points for the initial signup. +/- 30,000 if you stay past the first year meaning you’re liable for another year’s fee.
All around the $250-$350 mark. The churn and burn life mean I can only signup for WBC or SGB now, but I don’t know if 90,000 points is worth me going through the wringer.
Waiting for signup bonus to go back to 6 figure points before I bite

  • how long do points take to get credited to QFF account? think government transactions aren't counted towards the minimum spend!!

    • +1

      got this Sept last year
Yes, gov transaction dont count, and Aus post (including bill pay via AusPost) dont cant too

      • how long did it take for points to arrive after you hit minimum spend?

  • +1

In case i don't spend enough, can i purchase Amazon/Woolies gift cards from shops in order to meet 6k spend in 120 days?

    • +2

      Sure

    • +4

Pay forward health insurance - if you have that.

  • +3

How is this a deal? Aren't these standard fees? A deal = no fee for the first year, in my eyes.

    • +2

Banks are tightening up and those deals are few and far between

Personally this deal is not for me, but it may work for others so no harm in posting.

  • +2

Not great tbh, annual fees are right up there at $300 and 90,000 can be hand on an ANZ black for less.

    • +2

Best value imo is the American Express Qantas Ultimate, 2.25 points for QF bookings, 1.25 points for everything else, $450 Annuial Qantas Credit that offsets the $450pa annual fee, travel insurance, 100k QFF sign up bonus, and although not needed for me it might be handy to others, low $3000 min limit.

      • +1

Sign up bonus is currently 75000QF
Not the best card for churning but great for everyday spending

Note that AMEX needs 18months not holding any Amex card for sign up bonus so it’s harder for churning anyway

      • is it hard to use the $450 travel credit? Apart from having to book through the amex site, are there any other restrictions or gotchas?

        • +1

None, its just like for eg. Webjet, Expedia ect

          • @AircraftFreight: Negatory

            Its for amex travel only

            • @Drakesy: Yes as what I said, a Qantas Travel Credit used for Qantas flights. Its just that you need to book them through the Amex Travel Portal.

I was using examples to show that Amex isnt the direct seller, its a third party.

        • +1

I think you need to use them all at once and only for QF flights

          • @cardiology: yes, only for QF flight and can only use once
They will also change the way how the travel credit works from 1 May 2023

Beginning 1 May 2023, you will need to use your annual $450 Qantas Travel Credit on an eligible single Qantas flight booking of $450 or more on your eligible Card, made through American Express Travel Online. Your booking will be charged in full to your Qantas American Express Ultimate Card and American Express will then credit $450 to your Account within 3 business days.
You will still receive your $450 Qantas Travel Credit each year, and your Travel Credit anniversary will remain the same.

            • @littlesoldier: I've been having a hard time using the Qantas credit because all Qantas flights a over priced compared to other airlines and most of the flight times are quite shit in comparison as well.

  • +1

The sign up bonus is nice but holy cow $300 per year for what? 0.75 points per dollar?

    • The Westpac Platinum is better value for money points wise

  • about time but $6k wow

    • My old man does that in a day on materials.

  • +1

Thanks OP, ordered! Dont need a credit card but this seems to be a good deal.

    • Not really unless you’re after Qantas points. Right now, the Citibank Prestige is better value. At least +$1000 worth of gift card value + lot other perks.

      • Link?

  • +10

    https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/rew…

    ALTITUDE QANTAS PLATINUM seems better?

70k Qantas points, $49 card fee for first year if you're already with Westpac. +50 annual Qantas reward fee

You're paying $200 more for 20k points in this deal

    Also it's 4k spend in 90 days

    • Lol
      You're absolutely bang on
      +1

    • This or the ANZ one posted by denmec ? hmmmm

    • Yes people seem to go for the black level deals when you get only a relatively small number of extra bonus points for at least double the fee. Madness IMO.
