Where to Buy Online Music Downloads

Hi

I'm trying to buy some music online, so that i can download an mp3 or other audio file and use on my personal devices.
i /do not/ want a streaming service

I know of apple and Zdigital as two sources to purchase music online from Au. But Apple, being Apple, i can never manage to recover my account (from decades ago) and i dont have an apple device. Zdigital is too expensive.

Back in the old days you could buy music online everywhere. Google let you buy in their store and d/l, Microsoft would let you do same, and now - it's all gone.
Am i only limited to apple and Zdigital?

How do i trick amazon to let me buy from usa amazon ?

grr.

Thanks

Update: Turns out I finally managed to unblock my apple account and i can buy there and it seems to work ok when the m4a is sent to my android phone.

no one download noadays, its risky for your device and not ethical too.

    • i dont want to pirate. it takes effort and time and half the time it's poor quality - as i recall from my decades-ago peer sharing.

i like to buy and download music because I dont want the netflix scenario where suddenly a series i liked got removed and sent off to Stan or some other service i dont subscribe to.

It happens sometimes. Apple Music has their matching thing, so if an album you enjoy is removed or some songs are removed then you can just add your own mp3s to Apple Music and Apple will replace the poor quality mp3 with their high quality one. You can get iTunes Match for like $30 a year iirc, and it's included with Apple Music as long as you stay subscribed it'll work anyway.

iTunes is probably the most convenient way. iTunes music has no DRM since 2009, it's just a regular MP3.

    • no drm nice! ohwell apple it is then

  • I have an app where I can download the audio from youtube. Ethical? No, but I need my money more than Barbra Streisand does.

I also copy cds onto my laptop and put them on the phone. I get CDs for like 50 cents at op shops.

    • lol barbs …

  • You might find some music you like on Freegal, which is free to join if you are a member of a local library. Some info from OP from 2015

I have a tonne of legitimately obtained MP3s and let me just warn you that iPhones are a complete (profanity) if you're trying to load your own music onto them. I have tried many times but every time I try to sync my music library onto my iPhone it only actually loads about 10% of the files onto it, the rest will show as cloud entries.

    • Try Tiny Player

      • How does that help me sync the music onto my iPhone?

Now that you mention it, I wonder what happened to my trusty Nokia Lumia 520? Maybe it got sent to eWaste

That's why I haven't owned an iphone since no.4. Such a pain to have to sync to a computer and every time i did, i had to wait 2 hours for itunes to update because at the time my internet was a crappy 3g dongle that never worked. PITA

  • You can try mp3va.com
Not sure where they stand legally (nor do I care) but they have been around for many years.

  • I have a similar use case to you. I want to buy my music and keep it.

I buy a lot on Bandcamp but the mainstream artists aren't on there which is annoying. I normally wait for Bandcamp Friday so that artists gets 100% of my money.

I've noticed that CDs are just cheaper than zdigital (especially if you want to buy FLAC) and you can rip to whatever format you like. Yes there's a physical space issue involved though.

Google leaving the music purchasing landscape basically handed the entire business to Apple, and I refuse to use Apple.

    Zdigital

Geez, some of the prices on there are crazy. Probably cheaper to buy the physical CD from JBHifi and rip it to FLAC

  • for high quality digital downloads i use Qobuz: https://www.qobuz.com/au-en/shop
