PCIe 3.0 but still a great drive…… Wish they would discount the 2TB :(

    Thanks op

All good 👍. As I said I know nothing about internal drives. But as soon as I saw the price I knew it's a good deal.

    • Same here… I've been on the lookout for a pair of 2TB TLC drives to give my aging HTPC a bit of a refresh.

      • Why do you need 4 tb on a htpc? Isn't HDD more cheaper for mass storage? Just curious.

        • +4

Short answer… HTPC sits in the living room, so SSDs over HDD to ensure its dead-silent status. (besides, in the 2TB range, price/performance of 2.5" drives are pretty average anyway)

Why 4TB? It's the only always-on PC in the house, so it actually does quite a bit more than just the HTPC front-end. At the moment, it's running Plex, an OpenVPN appliance, my Unifi controller, and a bunch of other VMs/containers.

          • +2

@bobbieb: Cool, thats a great use of HTPC mate. Thanks for explaining.

I got one couple of years ago. good Gen3 drive for storage, dramless so don't put OS on it

    • Which one you suggest to upgrade lenovo s540 512gb ssd , to 2tb or 4tb ?

      • +1

depends on how much space you need

I shoot photos l, and I have in total about 4tb of sad space. haven't used 1tb yet of those

        • I am looking to get either 2tb or 4tb.. which drive is good as main drive in laptop?

          • @Modesty: 2tb is fine, even 1tb is fine, get 4tb if can afford, ssd is something you can keep and put in next device. my 1tb A2000 has been in around 15 laptops now

            • +1

@shabaka: How do you transfer windows and data to new ssd from the ssd that’s already in the laptop?

              • +1

@Modesty: there was some software that was free through Ozbargain, Acronis True Image I think

there are other free and paid alternatives. also sometimes SSD will come with a code for software

    • What drive do you get for OS?

      • +1

still running my 1tb A2000 Kingston I got in 2020. it's gen3 but very solid TLC drive with dram

        • so in three years you've gone through 15 laptops?

          • +2

@FoxJump: yep. it's my hobby, I buy and sell laptops, used to be a laptop technician. I get them at bargain prices, use them for a while and sell them with little to no loss

recently however I made an executive decision that laptops are not good for my back, so I sold last laptop (L5i Pro with 3070 Ti) and got a decent desktop for photo/video editing and Xbox Series X for gaming, end of story. A2000 is currently the boot drive in the said desktop

I got 2 laptops from work anyway lol

  • +2

Can someone suggest a better storage than this one? And/or more bang for the buck PCIe 4.0 maybe? I know nothing about internal drives either

    • What size?

      • 2TB

High speed Gen 4 (with DRAM):
WD SN850x - $250 (currently not available, but have been around this price frequently in the past)
Seagate Firecuda 530 - $250 (currently not available, but have been around this price once in the past)
          Samsung 980 Pro - $250
          Crucial P5 Plus - $210
          Samsung 990 Pro - $300
          Corsair MP600 - $265
[PNY XLR8 CS3140 - $200] (currently not available, but have been around this price once in the past)

Medium speed Gen 4 (w/out DRAM but has HMB):
          WD SN770 - $200

Medium speed Gen 4 (with DRAM):
          Crucial P3 Plus - $193

High speed Gen 3 (with DRAM):
          Samsung 970 Evo Plus - $230

Medium speed Gen 3 (w/out DRAM but has HMB):
          Kingston NV2 - $170

If you need a drive for a PS5 -> go for high speed gen 4
If you need a cheap as chips (and I mean super cheap ass) drive -> go for Kingston nv2
If you want the best all around future proof value -> SN850x or 980 pro are both great options
If you're gonna use this drive to play games and put your OS on it but don't care for possible Direct Storage implementation in the coming years -> crucial p5 plus or SN770 maybe?)

          • @Wicko: Thanks for the write up

          • @Wicko: If I buy one of these drives and used it as external sad, which sad enclosure do you recommend to maximise the speed of these ssds?

            • -1

@AirJordan23: Pretty much any ssd enclosure would be fine, you would just need to check what PCIe version it supports up to. If you have a gen 4 drive make sure it is PCIe 4, if you have a gen 3 drive then look for PCIe 3.

          • +1

@Wicko: I sincerely thank you and appreciate this write up! I've learnt some crucial information from above!

          • @Wicko: Note: the crucial p3 plus has HMB not dram, was a typo

    • +3

Wd sn850x and firecuda 530 are pretty decent, wait for a discount to get bang for you buck.

    • +3

kc3000 is amazing. has dram so can put OS on it, too. great performance and not too expensive

      • -1

Wd sn850x has a 20 dollar cashback promotion making is a bit more expensive but better performance with dram too.

        • depending on where you're installing the drive, something with lower power consumption may be the way to go. laptop for example

  • This work with ps5?

  • Could this be used in a QNAP NAS? It's not on the compatibility list, but wondering if it would still be possible to use without an issue?

    • +1

Pretty much all will be fine as QNAP and Synology limit the number of lanes for them, so speed typically capped at 2000mb/s

      • Thank you, so it doesn't matter that it's DRAM-less ?

        • i have wd blue nvme on my qnap

  • Hmmm, not that cheap when 2tbs is $150

  • +2
    • This is much better than the shitty Samsung here

    • This beats the Samsung soundly in all the important benchmarks. Nice.

      Good price.

    • +1

That one's been about $99 recently from Amazon US.

Might want to keep an eye on the price.

  • +2

Not a great time to be buying Samsung 980s:

    • -1

When you link an article that you clearly didn't read….

      • +2

        ?

What on earth are you talking about? If the counterfeit drives exist, then it's only a matter of time before they flood Amazon, because they're notoriously bad about preventing 3rd parties from selling counterfeit stuff on their platform.

        • -1

You did the equivalent of saying you went to parklea markets, bought a counterfeit cheap drive and now complaining that Samsung drives are being counterfeit and sold everywhere.

You did not read or understand what you even posted a link to. Just stop.

          • @Willy Beamish: Oh shove off. Amazon IS the equivalent of parklea markets and I haven't misunderstood anything. YOU have misunderstood me by reading way too far in. Pull your head in, mate.

  • Don’t buy overseas Samsung products. If anything is wrong (and 980 and 990s have issues) you will have to ship your drives both ways to foreign country…

(Source: I’ve lost 4 months and $200 shipping my 980 2TB to Samsung USA, as Samsung AU refuses to deal with those)

  • if you have a motherboard with 2 gen 4 nvme slots you can raid them in a raid 0 configuration and get 2tb or insane speeds.
