If you're looking at spending $385 on a SATA drive, it's probably worth spending about the same on a budget 4TB NVME drive and PCIe adaptor. Hugely improved performance.

    NVME: https://www.amazon.com.au/Crucial-PCIe-NAND-NVMe-3500MB/dp/B…

    Adaptor: https://www.amazon.com.au/UGREEN-NVMe-Adapter-M-Key-B-Key/dp…

Obviously there are cases when SATA is the only option.

    • True, for quite a few use cases (server cache, appliances, gaming consoles) it has to be SATA drives. For example in my case Unifi UCKG2P only uses SATA drives while there's barely any choices for NVMe to SATA bridges.

    • thanks. that adaptor is nice. just a single one. double one will be even better.
the crucial you mentioned is QLC

Double NVMe adapters can get seriously bottlenecked, especially with PCIe 3.0. Plus some of them aren't even double NVMe - the second slot can be SATA m.2. Just be careful.

The drive was just an example. There have been cheaper or better drives since my comment. But since we were originally talking SATA, the difference between QLC and TLC NVMe is pretty minor in comparison.

QLC m.2 drive is going to outperform any SATA drive in general and TBW is arguably overblown.

        • thanks, luckily I did notice the ones on amazon were PCIe 3.0. Ill be ok with the 1slot since Ill have the 4tb above :)
the P3 plus version is beast

The Endurance on this drive is quite low at 600 TBW

    • That's not low, it's gigantic.

It's relatively low for a 4 TB drive. A WD SN850x 4 TB for instance has a 2400 TBW rating. Kingston
Fury Renegade 4 TB is 4000 TBW. Even a 2 TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus is 1200 TBW.

In reality though, I dont think it matters much as most people aren't going to be constantly writing to the drive.
