Keep following Trump. Maybe you're the one brainwashed hehe.

        • Why do weirdo's always try to shoehorn Trump into everything? Almost like some kind of ignorant dog whistle.

          Be better.

Serious question. Anyone still using mask?

    • +12

I use them when I go into a hospital but that's about it

    • +11

I use when I have to do self checkout at the supermarket.

      • +1

        Why?

    • +8

      Yes, but only P2 ones.

    • +15

I do on flights (packed in like sardines) and when visiting the doctor (requirement).

      • +4

Oh, and when people in my household were positive.

    • +13

Aged care requires a mask during visits and the few times I've entered hospitals been told to keep one on. So still useful in certain circumstances. Wouldn't hurt to wear them if you're feeling under the weather.

    • +31

Yes, P2/N95 in any public indoor areas. Have managed to dodge it so far. Don’t want to play long covid roulette.

    • -2

The Y2K bug can be contagious. Better be safe than sorry.

    • +4

Is it a serious question? There are what 27million people in Australia. Some of those millions still mask.
East coast of NSW had very poor air quality a few days ago - pm2.5 was above 130ug/m3. That's 10x the healthy threshold. Guess what p2 masks were developed for and protect you from?

    • +2

if i go to the doc's or pharmacy i mask up. i got mild covid for a week when the new strain hit and it wrecked me so i'm convinced full covid is going to finish me off :)

    • +4

P2/N95 in public indoor areas, wish more people would do so, unfortunately selfish people are everywhere…

    • +1

      Yep.
Friend of mine contracted covid after letting lapse boosters (she only had 3, and about 12 months ago). She never had covid before and works in healthcare. Ran 3 days of 39 degree fever.

I use it on the train usually or in crowded places, and springtime when pollen is rampant.

  • +4

Bought 10 to stop those pesky facial recognition

    • +1

You should be more worried about gait recognition; it identifies you based on how you walk.

      Much harder to conceal.

      • +7

        Rollerskates should help.

  • +1

Its a fashion accessory. Use it when im too lazy to shave or just want to look cool.

    • +3

I was told at work that mandatory masks were not needed. I had to ask for one to cover my unshaved face on a Saturday morning. Never had to worry about that for last three years

  • +2

Should be given out free 😆

  • +8

    These are fabric masks.

    Do these do anything?

    • +6

      hide your identity

    • -2

Yes they catch a vast majority of the saliva droplets in their air that carry viruses. They are mostly effective against catching your own saliva but do help with stopping breathing in other peoples saliva.

      • -3

No totally correct as these droplets still get in through the eyes. That is why masks are pointless unless everyone is wearing them.

        • +3

Sorry that's not correct - droplets and aerosols can land on the membrane of your eyes but that membrane is tough and doesn't have any receptors to be infected. Aerosols released at high velocity can potentially get through the membrane but this doesn't occur in 99.99% of social settings. It may occur during intubation, which is why face shields are recommended or if someone purposely spits at you at close range.

So good quality masks are definitely not pointless if no one else wears one. A properly worn, P2/NIOSH N95 mask will significantly reduce your risk of infection.

      • saliva droplets
hey are mostly effective against catching your own saliva

In the context of Covid-19 do they do anything?
Now given you are likely the only person wearing one, these seem useless.

And Covid-19 is airborne anyway so you'll need a P2 or better mask.

      • +1

A basic cloth mask will slow down aerosols exhaled from your mouth/nose but they won't do much when you inhale other people's aerosols because they don't trap sub 2.5micron particulates. The reduction in risk for the wearer is about 10%, if that. Whereas a properly worn P2/N95 mask will provide close to 95% reduction in risk.

    • Still can trap larger particles like dust or pollen

    • +10

damn, hospitals are full of them

      • -1

how dare they suffocate our freedom!

        • +18

What do you have against people wearing masks? What's the misinformation? That wearing a mask can help prevent the spread of germs? There's nothing wrong with wearing one. Millions in Asia wear them if they're sick out of courtesy. If you don't want to wear one and it's not mandatory then that's fine as well.

          • +4

@boomersgold: They don't have much else in their lives so lash out at people who that make them feel uncomfortable. It's the politics of bullying.

          • @boomersgold: Because some people think that masks are a way of muzzling the public..

They also forgot that people have phones and can type.

Or.. "dO yOu GuYs NoT hAvE pHoNeS?"

And people have been wearing masks especially on high pollution days in places like South Korea, china, Hong Kong since even before covid days

    • +5

Does that signal higher education levels? 😆

  • Could be fun for a fancy dress party.

  • +6

If you want to wear a mask for covid or any respiratory virus. May as well only use a respiratory mask like N95 or even KF94.

  • +1

Have heard these masks are terrible, not worth t he cheap price supposedly if your just after a respiratory mask.

  • +10

You'll not find me on public transport without a mask now for the rest of my life. I will no longer get sick the day after arriving at a new country!

    • -7

Sorry to burst your bubble but mask serve no purpose unless everyone is wearing them. The viruses still get in through your eyes

      • +3

I'll tell that to the surgeons next time I get surgery, thanks.

      • +1

Sorry to correct you again. The virus will need to be sprayed onto your eyes for you to be infected through that vector.

      • Well then cover up your ugly face with a mask and spare us the pain.

AIRism…. Is that Japanese for Placebo?

    • Yeah I wasn't a big fan of them when I bought them last year, tbh preferred the shitty blue ones.

MUST VIEW . Dr John Campbell on YouTube etc - " masks, the jury is out " . Hes very highly regarded and so sad really to c the guy honestly apologise on line . All been a massive waste money landfill . Thee authorities going to admit this and all their other well just incompetence ? Sheep would look down on us and laugh .

    • +2

No idea why Dr John Campbell apologised. The Cochrane Libary review by Jefferson et al. 2023 that Dr Campbell is relying upon showed that mask wearing was inconclusive. It doesn't mean that they don't work.

Even the Editor in Chief of the Cochrane Library had to release a statement stating that the findings of that review were inconclusive.

      https://www.cochrane.org/news/statement-physical-interventio…

But when you have people and media who misinterpret this review for sensationalism or controversy, it just causes more misinformation.

Additionally, when the review has many biases and flaws, results are going to be questionable.

For example, the review combined results from studies where masks were worn in high risk settings to studies where masks were worn in low risk settings. Similarly, they combined results of studies when masks were worn all the time to studies when masks were worn some of the time.

The good people who wrote for The Conversation shed more light on the subject matter.

      https://theconversation.com/yes-masks-reduce-the-risk-of-spr…

Heck, even a non-academic explains this subject matter well.

      https://unchartedterritories.tomaspueyo.com/p/do-masks-work

TLDR: The Cochrane Library review is misleading, has been heavily misrepresented and is adding more fuel to the misinformation fire.

      • -1

        This. 100% this.

  • Chat GPT : As an artificial intelligence language model, I do not have personal opinions or beliefs, but I can provide information and facts related to wearing masks.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), wearing masks can help reduce the spread of respiratory viruses, including COVID-19. Masks can provide a barrier to prevent droplets from an infected person's nose and mouth from spreading to others. They can also help protect the wearer from breathing in droplets from others.

It is important to note that wearing a mask is not a substitute for other measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, such as physical distancing, frequent hand washing, and avoiding crowded indoor spaces.

It is also important to follow local guidelines and regulations related to wearing masks.
