I read somewhere it is not really 4K.

    • +1

      link?

      • I'll find it and post back later…

    • +1

It is 2x 4MP cameras = 8MP which is the same as 4K in total pixels in 16:9 format. Depends if you define 4K by pixel count or number of horizontal lines.

      • Yep, I saw that in one of the reviews…

It means that zooming in shows less detail than a proper 4K camera.

  • How realistic is the original price?

  • I was looking at getting 4 reolink and NVR but I don't know what to get as I want it to be compatible with the door bell when it comes out

    • I don't know what to get

      What do you mean?

    • im currently speccing a new setup for home, thinking of 4 of the cheaper reolink cameras and blue iris running on an old mac mini I already have, you might want to look into self hosted nvr like blue iris, zoneminder, frigate.

      • +1

I have reolink camera with zoneminder. It's a bit of hit and miss with setting up zones in zm. The native app. Does a better job of motion detection than zm.

      • I have a couple of Reolink cameras set up with Blue Iris. It takes a bit of fiddling to get some of their cameras to work ok but once that's done they work pretty well. For what you pay for it, BI is a pretty amazing bit of software and it integrates very nicely into Home Assistant (if that's your go).

        • +1

Why would you not use their NVR? Is there a benefit to Blue Iris?

          • +2

@rdhupar: self-hosted is more futureproof, more configurable, more secure (you control who can access - nvr's you have no clue what its accessing / what vulnerabilities there are & I can keep all the cameras completely isolated with only the computer running the nvr having access to the internet through tailscale), and integrates well with the rest of my self hosted smart home (homeassistant)

      • an old mac mini

Last I checked, BI doesn't run on macOS. Unless you are running a Windows VM?
        Shinobi is the macOS equivalent.

        • Nah just put windows on it - USB install & bootcamp drivers ;)

    • If you get a wifi doorbell it shouldn't matter about the NVR. If you are looking at a NVR ask what hardware version it is (there's a list on the support https://support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/900000602543-H…). Most new ones will be fine. If you want to go POE I wouldn't recommend buying a stock kit if you want to use Blue Iris or elsewhere as the cameras in a kit don't have a UID so you are locked into a Reolink NVR and will have that in the fine print. I bought all mine separately as they didn't have a kit of what I wanted and I since found out about the UID limitation.

Where did that original price come from? Reolink doesn't have that as the original price.

    • +3

Where did that original price come from?

They pulled it out of their a…

      • +2

What did you expect from someone that spams on behalf of a billion stores?

  • +3

Original price is a joke pretty sure this is only a hair below what Reolink direct has them for.

  • +2

Haven't seen them as cheap as these previously, so still a worthwhile saving.

    • Yeah i got one at launch for this price but also got $10 or $15 cashback at the time and a free (albeit crappy) SD card. Been pretty happy with it since installing in September last year.

  • @julancer Any deals on the Duo 2 PoE w/ Floodlights model?

    • No stock now, please follow Reolink to get the latest news

      • How can this be?

They are available for purchase right now from the Reolink AU site.
Does Reolink AE not ship from the same warehouse?

I guess I will just stick with the main Reolink site.

      • I can suggest the latest NVR called RLN36, which can work with the doorbell. here is the link:
        https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805026652223.html

        • I think you are replying to the wrong person here.

I asked about the Duo 2 PoE w/ Floodlights, not the newly released PoE doorbell from Reolink.

Yes, RLN36 is the latest NVR from Reolink.
However, it no longer has PoE ports but works in conjunction with PoE switches (which are separate purchases).

Anyone had issues with Reolink - eg support/service/warranty? Especially with buying from AliExpress? Or do you get local Reolink support?

    • +1

I got mine from Amazon and their support has been better than good…

Very responsive and they follow up to make sure you got things working right.

      • I got mine from Amazon

Reolink Duo 2 PoE model? Or, the old Duo?

        • Not Duo 2, I meant Reolink in general.

I got the RLC-823A (Smart 8MP PTZ PoE Camera with Spotlights) and some RLC-811As (4K Smart PoE Camera with Spotlight & Color Night Vision).

          • @jv:

            RLC-823A

This one is on my buy list next. I was waiting for the 16X model but it isn't coming to AU any time soon, and also they removed the spotlights which cripples colour night vision.

Any feedback / gotchas on the RLC-823A? I am planning to mount it on a 4m high pole just behind a 1.8m high fence.

Any feedback / gotchas on the RLC-823A?

              It works well…
Makes a bit of mechanical noise when moving, but otherwise I'm happy with it…
              It is huge too…

              • @jv: From all the reviews I have read, the mechanical turn noises are loud enough to be picked up in the recordings. Same for the 16x model.

Are you using a Reolink NVR?

                Been eyeing the RLN36: https://reolink.com/product/rln36/

Yes, the 8 channel that came in the kit…

                  yes, you can..

    • +1

You can submit a warranty claim via Reolink (it asks you to supply order number and order site and they will help but I think you then have to log a return via the site you ordered from). I did one a while ago via Amazon but don't quote me on it… I went through Reolink Warranty (which did support work first) with my Amazon Order details, then logged a return via Amazon but you sent back to Reolink). The thing that annoys me the most is that support is 24*6 via email (no phone support) and sometimes you might get a "less experienced" support person so you may need to send a few emails. Some people just order direct from the Reolink site to bypass some of the 3rd party site hassle.

I am tempted to order from the main site, but then I pause when I look at the AE prices.
It looks like AE is shipping all the Reolink products from their AU warehouse.
So, if you need to carry out a RMA on a faulty camera, I assume we can ship it back to their AU warehouse rather than international postage to China?

        • +2

I am tempted to order from the main site, but then I pause when I look at the AE prices.

Yeah that's my concern too. I generally keep AE purchases to stuff that don't have too many points of failure - or don't care if it breaks for the price. Wouldn't want to deal with shipping back to China

        • I ordered this time via AE. If you look at the delivery options there is a From Australia to X via AUSPOST which should mean it's shipping locally so the warranty should be local as well. Shipping is a little hidden but I always check there and pay extra for tracking on most things (though it's cheaper from AU than CN for the duo 2 and probably the default)

          • @o0o:

If you look at the delivery options there is a From Australia to X via AUSPOST

Yes, I saw that option, and hence was very tempted even though I had sworn off AE after running into some dodgy sellers.

In terms of warranty, I should be able to deal directly with Reolink AU even if I buy from Reolink via AE, right? Or, will they simply fob me off and ask me to contact the reseller instead?

            • +2

@DoctorCalculon: My Duo2 got delivered yesterday from AE so was a matter of days.

If you look at the Reolink warranty claim there is a drop down from where you purchased it from. AE, Ebay, Amazon, Direct etc so they have official stores on different platforms. This is my first time buying from them on AE. You can contact support to clarify if it is an official site and warranty process. I did that once before cause on Ebay there were 2 sites (reolink offficial and reolink-security and support confirmed both were legit).

When I bought from Amazon I went via Reolink direct and selected Amazon and provided the Amazon order number and it went through fine. If I remember right it was a 410W which failed and they let me pay the difference (on Amazon) to get a POE camera so can't fault them on that front.

              HTH

              • @o0o: Thank you. Very helpful answer. You deserve an upvote of x100.

LOL! I asked them the same question last year. However, they never responded to my second question as to why they have two official sellers on eBay selling almost the same products with the same prices.

  • This is a pretty good price but it's never been >$450. It's always under $300 at Reolink's website - $220 right now.
