  • Already got one of the yellow ones and it seems pretty good so got another. A$5.31

Could never imagine a digital multimeter would only cost $5 one day.

    • Great price, signed in just to say thanks op. Bought one

    • Digital multimeter, which involves labor and engineering of many people, for the price of kilo of bananas or so.

      • +4

Imagine the working and living conditions of those people lol

  • $5.31…top stuff OP cheers

  • +2

are these any good? how's the accuracy?

    • +9

ive been using the mini version posted above for 5+ years…perfectly fine for car batteries, eneloops, circuit soldering repair/continuity testing etc.

Don't chance these cheapies with mains voltages, likely to end badly.

      • how do you test car battery? with this?

        • +3

Put the positive probe on the positive terminal and the negative probe on the negative terminal and it spits out voltage…

          • +4

@evocable: Spits out the unloaded voltage - not very useful.

Put on the headlights for a better idea of what's going on, even crank the engine.

            • @afoveht: How can you tell at what voltages the battery is kaput

        • ur probably better off with a simple digital 12v voltmeter if thats all u want to do with it, far less to learn from ur starting point

Tongue on one side, probe on the other

Probably depends on what the waveform looks like.

Although on the little small boards and stuff I usually prod it's just DC voltages with sine waves.

Anything more complex than that you'll just pull out the Fluke or scope?

      • +4

        DC sinewaves?

        • I guess what he wanted to say was that this is not true RMS but ended up saying something completely different

    • +2

These are terrible, nothing more than a toy, really.
If you are into electronics, I would recommend getting a Klein from Bunnings - that is exactly what I did. More expensive? For sure!! Do I trust the Klein? Yep. Did I ever trust the cheapo? Nope.

    • +2

Good enough for home purposes and basic electronics hobbyist work.

EEVblog did an article on these, the design has been around forever (I remember buying one 25 years ago for uni) and the IC that does the multimeter work is a variant of a very good Fluke design from the 70s/80s (I forget exactly when)

      Edit, sorry it was Hackaday

    OOS :(

  • Anyone know if the $5 Cashrewards cashback works with this?

  • Is it just me or does the link not work. One Keeps taking me to the app where it shows $10.88 and the other link says sorry page cannot be found.

  • Never mind, OOS!

  • OOS, just miss it

    True RMS?…

    • +1

Don't stick these near mains voltage

  • Mini is still in stock - got one at 19:50.

  • The A830L A$5.31 model is no longer available, but I was still able to order the DT830B for A$3.56.

Features: Easy to use full hd digital display

    lol

  • Thanks OP, cost $4.70 after a 60c coupon I got from buying Cleary's ~$6 screwdriver set

  • About to check out, bath the baby and it's gone

I have the mini one under a different brand and the "bearing" balls that click when you spin the knob around WILL break eventually and prevent you from turning the knob, but it is an easy fix. Just disassemble the multimeter, throw away the balls and it should be back to working normally… without the satisfying clicks when you spin it.

Also, eventually, the contacts for the same knob also wear out in a way that the "OFF" position becomes connected together with the highest Voltage option (to the left) - that means that the multimeter always stays ON and eats away at the battery. The way to fix it is again to disassemble and scrub with a pointy screwdriver a clear line between the "OFF" contacts and the Voltage contacts.

But hey, can we really complain about $2 item? (I paid about $15 locally here a few years ago lmao)

  • I got mine for a dollar and I don't know why

    • Looks like you have another Discount added. Maybe a coupon in your account or something ?

      • New user

        • Nah not a new user. I'm guessing it's the coins I've been collecting lately.

  • Can't add the main one to cart, but, If I view the offer and then login, the link to 'add to cart' is active (for yellow only) and I can add to cart. Issue though it's charging me $0.76 tax instead of $0.45 (which is 10%). If I click on any other colour and go back to yellow, the link to add to cart it greyed out.

I ordered the small one for about $4. Didn't need it but a 2nd meter might come in handy. Pity it's not one of those auto-detecting types, oh well, $4.

  • Cheers. Got the Dt830b for $1.54 AUD

    • No backlight on that one which is handy nor beeper I don't think.

  • Guys. Electricians. Does this multimeter measure capacitance ??

    • +1

Even if it did I wouldn't trust it.

    • With a series resistor in diode drop mode / resistance mode with an understanding of the drive current - and a stopwatch - sure.

    • Buy the UT meter from BCF. Does capacitance in circuit (across a broad range). Brilliant for $20. That being said, modern caps can test fine, but still be dead. If in doubt, just replace.

  • Says………Sorry, this item is no longer available!

  • The updated link is not the same compared to the originally posted model

Should be a new post as different product surely rather than changing the whole post to a different product?

    • +1

it should be a new post, and don't call me shirley

  • Bought one of these a few years ago, does a good job. However about 2 weeks ago, the black cable just came apart. Wasn't connected to the tip. Aliexpress had replacements for $2. No worries mate.

  • 9V battery :( Guess I can pull that out of the smoke alarm for the once-a-year time I'll use it

  • +1

Original A380L available again, just ordered one for $5.31.

    • +1

Thanks for noting. Grabbed one just before bed!
Gotta laugh as just went back and checked (various browsers and price keeps changing between $10.99 and $24.17. Somebody at the store must be finding it hard to decide on what price to apply now!

  • Nothing to complaint for $5. bought some during years.

You need to know that the test leads are very fragile (specially close where is plug in)

I broke 3 in less than 4 months (due a heavy usage and not being careful) ended up buying multimeter uni-t.

    • One can buy better quality pair of leads off ebay or the likes. They aren't that expensive (around $6 for ok ones).

  • Just got it for $5.31 I am happy.

    It's still working.

  • Is it a national security risk like TikTok? :D

  • Buy now option is disabled for me for this DT830B Mini Digital Multi-Meter US$2.34 (~A$3.50), any suggestions please.

    • +1

You can still get it for the same price as part of aliexpress buy 3 items for US$1.99 each (US$2.34 inc GST). If you click it from mobile and add to picks (you will need the app) and then pick 2 other items it will let you check out.

  • I was thinking of getting a few of these just to use in random circuits. It seems cheaper to get one of these, than to buy the voltage/current measuring modules (although they tend to be able to measure much higher currents)

  • Great deal. No biggie if anyone missed out. Sales come around for these standard models every now and then. Bunnings had a sale one the cheaper model for $4 last year.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/726280

I needed one urgently and bought at Bunnings for $10. It does the job. The cable/probe feels a little thin and flimsy.

  • They didn't waste time in shipping (or should I say getting it onto an aircraft). Mine shows as already arrived in Sydney!
    Arrived at linehaul officeCarrier note: Sydney-Linehaul Arrival:Arrived Sydney 2023-03-27 12:28:00 GMT+10

  • I just recieved mine earlier this morning !! Thanks Op!

  • Mine arrived today with a cracked LCD screen. Useless packaging in bubble wrap only.

    • Take a Pic and submit a ticket. They will refund. I ordered one which was faulty and no problems with refund on the day. The second one was fine.

  • Received mine today (black one)
No external or replaceable fuse, haven’t had a close look at the board yet

    • Doubt there is an actual fuse inside that is replaceable :-) Only more expensive ones have those.

  • Just received the DT-830B in the mail. The meter is super light, though doesn't include a 9v battery. 2.5weeks from China, not a bad delivery time.

    • [EDIT] There's no continuity testing on this meter?? That seems odd. Manual says to switch to (speak icon)… but there isn't one… This is unusal for a meter, no? Thought it would have been standard ?

  • Which one as the XL830L has one and looking at the black one, isn't it the setting down the bottom between the red lines above where it says 10A.

    • The DT830B Mini Digital Multi-Meter https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004115886436.html?source….

I thought it would have been standard on all meters :/. The setting between the red lines reads 'hFE' used for testing transistors. I checked anyway just in case but it doesn't beep on that setting.

      • Ah ok and looking further into that model, it doesn't make note of any in the specs.
This How to use DT-830B Video confirms it doesn't have one. There isn't even a speaker inside.

The original advertised model i.e. XL830L does have one.
