[Open Box] Razer Tomahawk Desktop: i9-9980HK, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 2TB HDD, 750W PSU $699 + Delivery @ BPC Technology

680

buy only if you're a Razer fan I guess. that makes me one? lol this is $1300+ elsewhere

official specs and support page

Also here are max dimensions of cards that will fit into this:
"The peak height of the graphics card should not exceed 5.51 in (approx. 140 mm) and should have at least 1 in (approx. 25 mm) allowance for the power connectors."

"Length: 12.6 in / 320 mm
Height: 5.51 in / 140 mm
Width: 1.36 in / 60 mm"

I see people often buy those SFF refurbished desktops from Dell or HP and then struggle adding GPUs into them

now here's an alternative:
- brand new despite open box
- i9-9980HK CPU (8c/16t)
- fitted out with dual channel 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of SSD (3rd gen Samsung NVMe)
- one blank m.2 slot for second NVMe
- even comes with 2 TB HDD (2.5" SATA)
- Windows 10 Home
- 10L case not much larger than Razer external GPU housing

at this price it's a good alternative to those refurbished SFF boxes as it comes with decent RAM and SSD, in a solid metal Razer tool-less case, with 750W power supply, this thing easily fits 3 cooler cards (original config came with 3080 FE), has 2 free 6+2 power connectors

but honestly when you can buy a brand new system from BPC or Enigma or TechFast for $999 it's hard to define value for this. this is based around Intel NUC Extreme Compute Element version 9, advertised that you can just easily swap it out later (BPC sell version 12 for $999 lol), but that's hogwash because unless you upgrade the "Board Element" with it, you're stuck with PCIe Gen3 for your graphics slot.

BPC do have the upgraded "Board Element" with PCIe Gen4 though.. incidentally? haha

on the other hand, this comes with Windows 10 Home, while BPC / TechSlow / Enigma don't give you activated OS, so there's that I guess.

ok sorry footie is starting deal posted

ok half time! so here come more thoughts:

Ports:
- 2x gigabit Ethernet ports (why two? but thanks Intel)
- 4x USB 3 ports (20 Gbps speed)
- 2x Thunderbolt 3 ports
- WiFi 6 on board (AX200)
- optical line out (doubles as 3.5mm line out)
- 3.5mm headset jack
- HDMI 2.0 for built in graphics

Cooling:
- Intel NUC Extreme Compute Element (what a name!) has its own cooler
- 2x 120mm fans on top

Cons:
- upgrading NUC element will cost ya
- also you'll have to upgrade the Board Element if you want PCIe 4 or 5 (comes with PCIe 3 board)
- zero ports on the front panel. just huge logo. Come on Razer you designed and built in RGB hardware, but couldn't route a single USB to the front? goddamit

Pros:
- it's got cool RGB
- it's Razer (sorry should have been a con)
- all metal build
- compact and looks awesome
- that's all there's to say on the matter

oh, and for the record - I got one from BPC about 2 weeks ago. I like it, it's quiet and got RGB. I use it for photo editing at which it totally excels, but this should do gaming just fine. I'm tempted to stick a 6650 XT into it at some stage.

last but not least, don't forget to grab last BIOS here

  • 9980HK is a mobile CPU?

    • +3

this is based around Intel NUC Extreme Compute Element, all NUC's are mobile CPUs and sodimm RAM

      • The 13 extreme now runs desktop processors

        • +1

          nice!

          • +1

@shabaka: Yeah I was considering getting one but apparently they get hot and fans are noisy

            • @atlas: this thing is quiet. I don't think one could fit 13 extreme in here, only 11 or 12 are an option

        • It’s also twice the size.

You’ll get better value with a high spec ITX build, but there aren’t many pre-built products like that on the market, if that’s what’s valuable to you.

  • +5

If it didnt have that Razer logo it would be a cool looking case, same as the Blades

    • logo can be turned off if that's any consolation lol

      • The logo just makes it look cheap. I would prefer it more if it was without.

        • razer chroma underneath will give you a heart attack then 😋

      • Ive got a Blade and it still is just a transparant green plastic when its off

    • Owned two razer laptops back to back now…

And I concur…. First one I had a D-brand skin over it and looks so much better with just the small indent.

Second one, I've got a white skin with the green showing…. It's better looking but yeaaaaah…….

  • +1

If they added a GPU for $$1200 or less it would sell faster

    • it does have options to add GPU, forgot to mention. but they didn't strike me as good value. also remember limited to PCIe 3 for graphics slot

3060 12gb +$699 and it goes downhill from there onwards

      • +1

PCI 3 is not an issue most GPU wouldn't see much increase with pci4. So don't worry too much about that

        • oh that's good. for some reason I thought PCIe 4 is a must for modern GPUs, after having v4 in my latest laptops

          • @shabaka: Part correct
Some gpus like the junk 6500xt need pcie4 to run ok
            Most are fine tho

  • Hope they update ebay price

    • I know right.

  • Does this support dual graphics cards?. Because there's two VGA options.

    • +3

      Huh?

I presume it has onboard video and a GPU slot.

      • All i'm saying is that there's two VGA options drop down boxes.

Edit: actually i've just seen pictures and there is indeed 2 x PCI-E 16x slots in it with what looks likes like supports 2 or maybe 3 slot width cards. You can literally run dual GPU. But i don't know why you would want to.

    • +1

I think it's just a site bug. one gpu, dual slot, up to 12 inch length

  • Mini-ITX ?
Like the SFF but I think I get the BPC or Enigma or TechFast for extra $200

    • not really, it's got Intel NUC Extreme Compute Element inside

  • 3080 is a $1000 add on

    • It's coming up as $1099 actually in the VGA options drop down box.

  • While I was trying to checkout, there is an extra charge of $99 (Choose BPC Technology Premium Dispatch Service Get Dispatched Fast and Safe). Thus the price is not $699, right? It should be $798 + delivery. Not nice…

    • +1

You can untick that at bpctech.com.au/checkout/#shipping
      https://i.imgur.com/pXeBkO8.png

    • I wonder if that means that it just goes to the top of the dispatch list. Why is that the $99 that's extremely exxy just to get your order shipped out of the warehouse sooner.

      • "Choose BPC Technology Premium Dispatch Service Get Dispatched Fast and Safe (Reccomended) (Due to the high volume of orders we are currently receiving, there will be delays in our warehouse of 4 to 5 business days we will endeavor to send out as soon as possible.)"

Yep, just gets your item dispatched faster…and maybe packed better.

        • Why would they pack it better than order orders?. Are they saying that those who don't pay the $99 get improper shipping packaging which might cause the item to get damaged during shipping. All orders should have proper shipping packaging for this no matter if they pay that $99 or not. And this should have shipping insurance included as standard on all orders. This is just dodgy as.

          • @hollykryten: Well, I assume they just put extra stuff that is less necessary.

I think you're mistaking "better" with "necessary"

            • @ihuntbargains: That should already be included in the crazy $45 standard shipping price which they charge. I mean you should already think that the proper and best package protection should be included for that price.

In the end of the day if you pay that $99 you've essentially just paid $144 just to get it shipped to you. Because they not only charge you the $45 for standard shipping but also the $99 on top of that for fast shipping dispatch and insurance. That is totally insane.

              • @hollykryten: They already do package it well.
Shipping stuff costs money. Idk what you expect.. its just a premium option there for those who want it. They're not cutting regular orders short, they just got the extra mile for those who want to pay for the service.

It's like uber vs uber black.
Both get you from point a to b fine, just uber black is more premium cars.

                • @ihuntbargains: Well of course this business recommends the $99 premium dispatch service. They must be making an absolute killing in profit from it from any customer who takes it up.

But i wouldn't fall for it thinking you have to pay the $99 for shipping insurance. It should already be covered. No business in their right mind would send out a $700 item to any customer without having it already fully insured in the standard shipping rate.

But in my opinion paying the $99 for this is not worth it. That price is just extortionate.

              • @hollykryten: Only 45$ ?? Man I had to pay $130 to get an order shipped to me in Darwin.

    • +1

just untick that $99 service, it's optional

  • +1

This looks like great value which makes me think there has to be something I'm missing

    • +11

It has an old mobile cpu

      • That doesn't matter if you go for the GPU upgrade option for an actual real graphics card.

        • +1

          It might bottleneck newer GPUs.
Depends on the games you play

          • @FireRunner: yes, and personally I wouldn't run a top end card in such space either. this is good with a 3070 or 3060 Ti or 6700 XT I'd say. they did run it out with 3080 FE off the bat, but I am not sure it's a solid pairing. that CPU is no slouch, but 65W TDP.

    • It's probably an older model about to be discontinued.

      • +2

no one ever thought they'd actually produce it

one night they were smoking something and thought hmmm I wonder if we could fit whole computer into our external GPU housing!

    • +2

to be honest with you, for the same price you can have an ugly desktop from Dell or HP with roughly 30-40% more processing power of 12th or 13th gen Intel, but it will not be ready to take in a GPU (weak PSU, constrained chassis, looks like an office PC). if it's raw CPU power you're after, go for that

for a bit more you can have a 3060 system from BPC / Enigma / TechSlow it will have more processing power and will be ready for gaming, but you'll pay extra for OS. however that's still a great value, so if it's a gaming PC you're after, go for that.

this is a niche product because it's a Razer / Intel whim and CES clickbait that no one ever thought they'd actually put into production, but here it is. it's a product no one really asked for, that's why it's going cheap I guess. plus mobile CPU (decent performance though).

    • +2

It's actually not that great…. 4 year old cpu… you can buy one of their prebuilt ones with a gpu and 11400f for not much more…..

  • It looks like a 4yo hot-boi.

  • I like it, but can’t justify replacing my Intel Nuc 9 Extreme with this.

    • probably same thing in a different case. oh and if you have the Extreme Kit, this fits longer cards

      • Would have bought this if I didn’t have the NUC already. But since they are both 9th gen CPUs I’m really just paying for the Razer logo and that extra space for a longer card.

        • +1

also free Windows, set of RAM, SSD, HDD

  • +2

The Intel Core i9-9980HK is a mobile processor with 8 cores, launched in April 2019.

    • it is! :) Razer was smoking together with Intel when they designed this thing. groundbreaking "totally modular" PC based around NUC Extreme element. I guess covid shortages made them reach for version 9 of it

      • For average usage, just wondering how long this PC can last for?

        • Maybe 3-5 years?

  • Bought this because the omen 4090 deal that I jumped on saw my order delayed by 2 months and as I sold my current beefy gaming laptop, the zephyrus g14 i still have cant hold its weight as a proper gaming machine with its 1650ti.

my friend is selling his 3070 for cheap to me and with this makes for a decent gaming rig all things considered. Specs arent that great but im certain with that razer & sff branding i will be able to sell this down the line for not much loss.

oh and i am a sucker for rgb so thats that.

    • +1

make sure 3070 fits (check dimensions in the post)!

this fits 3080 FE, but not sure what kind of 3070 you got there mate

lol RGB totally sold me on this, too

      • ah yeah cheers for that, i saw your description and checked he had one of those gigabyte eagle with them budget coolers so at 282x115x41 should fit comfortably in this rig haha

        • should be an easy fit then :) 3070 will make a solid 1440p gaming rig

  • Thoughts on this as a base for a new Plex Server? My HP N40L still going strong but this sounds for the price.

  • So tempted if not just upgraded to itx 13gen build… My MSI Z690I TB4 already more than $500…

    • ITX tax

      • My last build was 8700K, tied with this CPU I guess? Looks tempting, but if you think carefully, not that good of a deal, (hard to upgrade, thermal limit of the compute unit, etc.) But good for hankintosh maybe?

        • my justification was I had a budget of about $700 for a desktop for photo editing primarily

I could go with Dell or HP, with discounts available I could get for $800 something with 13th gen i5

but ugly AF, and also I don't want my desk to look like office cubicle more than it does already. plus weak PSU. plus minimum RAM

then I found this one - decent RAM config, storage options, looks super cool in that tool-less case, plus Razer build quality and RGB, compact and quiet, and I can just stick a gaming card here if I so wish (no plans so far)

I think it'll work for me for a while, I really enjoy this RGB lol

  • For a home server, this would be great. But, apart from that, it's hard to see who this is actually for…

    • The 9980HK will probably run very hot and quite loud given it's on the old 14nm process.
    • It's a Razer device, so quality control could be a problem (just anecdotally on this one - quite a few people on here have experienced QC issues with Razer devices)
    • If it breaks, are you going to ship it back to BPC?

I have the Intel NUC 12 12900 right now, which I understand is a completely different device, but the concept of "computer in a small box" is similar. Even on my 12900, which is a newer process, the box frequently gets loud for little to no reason, and temperatures hover around 80-85c. The little fan that Intel has, that blows air over the processor, etc, isn't enough, so when it spins quickly it sounds like a laptop fan. My NUC has 3 fans and frequently gets very hot, so it's hard to imagine how 2 fans would be better on this thing.

It's cool it comes with RAM and a HDD. But do you need some slow DDR4 SODIMM RAM and a spinning disk?

If I had my time again, I'd probably just get the NZXT H1 case and get my own mini-itx internals. Should you get this, or put that $699 towards another computer that can actually keep itself cool is worth some consideration.

    • can't say I heard it go really loud, or get real hot while doing photo editing. even building previews for 6000 images it didn't get loud, although I can see it used all 16 threads for this, and it went on for quite a while

but I totally agree actually, see my first statement in original post. this is for Razer fans only I guess haha

    • your cpu has a 202w power limit for a period which is probably why the cooling is suffering
vs the 45w in this deal (unless it gets tweaked in bios, even then only 90w is the limit)

      • mine is preset to PL1 = 65W in BIOS

        • fair enough, either way the 12th gen cpu's are well known to run hot so not surprise a NUC using it will also

  • I bought one, YOLO.

Will give it a whirl for photo editing and slap a 2nd hand 3060 into it for AI processing.

  • oos!

  • worse - they've taken orders over their stock levels and are now contacting customers to swap it out for this https://www.bpctech.com.au/product/kp-nuk110-01-kraken-power…

    • Yep just got that
Not unexpected as it was open box sale

      • Not unexpected?

I am not a technology sales professional but from where I am it doesn't seem overly burdensome for them to limit orders to their stock level?

        • Yep i agree from that persective
But open box is generally a single unit especially for something as rare as this

          • @Lonewolf1983: they never told me exact numbers they had, just that: "All of the units we have were supplied by Razer as open packs, with that supplier removing the graphics card."

so they probably were originally the 3080 configurations that Razer decided to take GPUs out and sell separately

it's not unusual for web sites to have trouble coping with a lot of parallel orders. if a website decreases stock once payment is taken, and only checks stock when adding to cart, that means that if another 5 people added the last unit into the cart, they will all be allowed to check out taking stock to -4, so seller ends up 4 units short

and your order was one of the last ones, I take it

            • @shabaka: True, that makes sense given the 3080s paired with them.

I asked them to price match sans windows licence but they declined.
Shows how much they overcharge for windows….

Told them to do better with their ordering systems

        • Agreed, pretty poor - not hard to update you CMS with the exact number that you have so you don't oversell. Then on top of that to say sorry we're out of stop please top up your amount and get this instead…

    • +1

not a bad replacement, 12th gen NUC, comparable form factor

      no Razer, but pretty close

    • This is actually a better deal, any one want to sell theirs?
