SONOFF USB ZIGBEE Dongle-E Plus US$12.73 Delivered (~A$19.88) @ TOP-Smart-Home Store AliExpress

180

EDIT: Got fooled by product selection game… but found a still decent sale price deal. Make sure to select "DONGLE-E"
UPDATE: Credit to @Shake for a cheaper one at ~$19.88

Ensure you choose: "Bundle: Sonoff ZBDonlge-E" it is not the default item.

This uses the silicon labs EFR32MG21 (same as the sky connect dongle) making it well supported by ZHA (home assistants own zigbee coordinator).
Hard to pin down an RRP but suffice to say at normal times it'll cost you at least $30

  • Just last night I ordered the Skyconnect USB from Amazon ($75) as I want to explore Home Assistant and I couldn't find any of these (easily).

Might just buy one - Just in case! :)

    • OUCH! I paid 30 USD from SEEED studio for my sky connect.
This Sonoff has an external antenna, and rugged aluminum build.
Given the fact it is a mesh network, the external antenna may not help much if at all because the nodes in the mesh will be relaying the communication anyway.
At this price… why not buy it anyway!

      • I’m pretty sure they can be reflashed as routers

So you could plug it in somewhere and it just extends the mesh

Then if your co-ordinator dies, you just take out the router and reflash it as co-ordinated, and 👌

        • Interesting, but it's worth noting that hard-wired appliances are generally routers.. e.g. HUE downlights etc

          • @[Deactivated]: Oh, for sure.

I was just referring to using the backup device while it’s laying about.

And also a good way to extend the network if you have a huge house or property!

  • Its $29

    • Thanks, have updated for a correct but not as cheap price

  • SkyConnect also has thread/matter support so while they're similar, they're not entirely comparable

    • +1

Running both protocols on the same device is not advisable as of yet - reliability and performance can suffer.
If you have an Apple TV or other device that already supports matter/thread… current advice is not to use the dual stack.
Using the dual stack on sky connect entirely changes how it runs, requiring home assistant OS (as of now), and it can create more work for the host and radio.

  • That price isn't for the ZigBee stick

    • Thanks, adjusted for the cheapest price but fell for the trap

  • It's appearing as $29 for me?

    • have adjusted it, wrong selection trick

  • +1

I think $11AUD is the price for the SNZB-01 switch, the dongle is $29+GST

    • Thanks i think you are right argh.. let me look again

    • That is a bit of a trap. Maybe I can use the switch I just bought somewhere.

      • its deliberate - I have updated the deal - thanks.
You definitely can use it - there's no point of zigbee without appliances.
Door switches for turning lights on or triggering alarm, motion sensor for the same.
Remote switches for triggering it, such as a switch next to your desk or bed etc.

Is this well supported with zigbee2mqtt now? I am still running one of the earlier Sonoff dongles without a case or antenna.

    • +1

TI is still better for Zigbee2MQTT as Silicon labs support is alpha still. In your case you would want the "P" version not "E"

      • Thanks. Yep, figured would need the P version.

        • -1

I have this P for a week now and a couple of days ago my zigbee network just broke, and https://github.com/Koenkk/zigbee2mqtt/discussions/15336 suggests I am not alone. Old lame CC2531 is way more stable for my 40 devices.

          • @aik: Could be a bad device or a bad firmware.
the old ones were stable but had limitations

            • @[Deactivated]: my bet it is a bad firmware, waiting for an update.

              • @aik: On a similar note, This is the reason I am switching from Deconz, random lockups have become more common - but this seems to be reported on the forums as more wide spread….

          • +1

@aik: I’ve had the P via Z2M for about six months with no issues. I have around 10 devices connected.

There was a firmware update recommended when I got it. If you haven’t done that, it is worth checking.

Also - if you haven’t done this, make sure it is connected through an extension cable, because the USB3 circuits in the PC/RPi etc cause interference.

            • +1

@Public21: I have an extension cable and the newest firmware from Dec last year, as I have been doing this for years now for my older CC2531, I know the drill :-) But I also have around 40 devices of all kinds (lights/buttons/power) and vendors (Xiaomi/Tuya/Sonoff/Ikea.Girier) and probably this makes it break. See the github thread above.

              • @aik: Yeah - read your post on GitHub. Very annoying.

    • I've got one running with z2m no probs

  • I am new to this.

This device is NOT stand alone and need a computer or another device with USB to run right?

Isn't this is better since it stand alone or am i missing some thing? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005234485826.html

    Some please explain LOL

    • For those who are enthusiastic, especially in the HA community… having the ability to control it by running your own coordinator is seen as better.
You can use devices from ALL vendors together: e.g. Phillips, Ikea, Gledopto, Crest, Ewelink, etc as well as Sonoff/Tuya/Aqara.

    • Correct, you need a hub of some sort to actually issue the zigbee commands. The hub you linked would work fine, it does Zigbee and WiFi (Tuya app) but some people (like myself) prefer to use all zigbee instead of Tuya (WiFI with servers in China) so that my devices aren't reliant on the internet to work.

To use a USB dongle like this, you'd have to run some sort of software such as Home Assistant. It's not much harder than setting up a modem but it is a lot more steps.

  • This listing is cheaper at A$13.79, looks like the same product to me… could be worth a post on its own?

    • Thanks I’ll add a note…
I searched high and low but the searching on Ali express leaves a bit to be desired

  • Can anyone tell me if I need an electrician to install this or is this DIY?

    • +1

This is a USB dongle, you plug it into a USB port.

      • Thanks.
I was looking at the bundle

        • +1

Ah, sorry. No, the bridge is USB powered, and motion sensor uses batteries (CR2450), so no hardwiring is required.

          • +1

@bio: Personally I prefer the Hue motion sensor if you get a good deal - it takes AAAx2 not CR2450

            • @[Deactivated]: Dunno about the Sonoff ones but the CR2450 in my Xiaomi motion sensors have lasted several years and are still going. I prefer them to AAA as it allows the sensor to be much more compact.
