Motorola Edge 20 Pro 5G (6.7" OLED, 12GB/256GB, SD870, NFC, Dual SIM) $499 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

1660

Low price on this Motorola phone with some really good specs for $499. I own the Motorola Edge 20 which has a weaker CPU and less storage and it performs really well. Especially since it was released with Android 11, received Android 12 and Android 13 on the way.

Featuring 6.7" 2400x1080 OLED 144Hz display, Gorilla Glass 5, 12GB RAM, 256GB UFS 3.1 storage, Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 CPU, 4500mAh battery with 30W TurboCharge (USB-C), 108MP + 16MP + 8MP rear camera, 32MP front camera, fingerprint reader, Dual SIM, NFC, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1 and Widevine L1.

Go for edge 30 pro , available for 645 on officeworks

      I can't see it?

      • sorry edge30 fusion

I have one. Very warm phone.

      • warm?

        • -1

Yes, it gets hot when using it.

  • tempting, but the speaker is one of the weakness. Edge 30 Pro was $699, that's also a good deal.

    I'm deliberating again.
How can a supposedly flag ship phone actually manage to come up short in some areas compared to my current, smashed mid-range moto g phone I bought for $300 two years ago that i really need to replace.

The Pro has the smallest battery of the Edge 20 series - even my Moto G 5G Plus has 5,000mAh.
The charging is the same 30W - no wireless.
The camera is described as basic. But it's probably an improvement - although the files are going to be massive.
Despite the awesome display, the speakers are poor - hands free volume "not quite loud enough" and one forward-firing earpiece speaker, and one bottom-firing speaker which mismatches the stereo output - though another review says output is mono and not suitable for enjoyable media consumption.
The 144Hs display is also described as a gimmick due to limited apps supporting it.

And then there's the following comments from a review: "Missing – in comparison to some competitive handsets
IP rating IP52 is a joke
3.5mm Not a deal-breaker, but we would have liked to see a USB-C to 3.5mm DAC cable or USB-C buds
Qi Wireless Not a deal-breaker but nice at this price. No reverse charge either.
MicroSD No, but USB-C 3.1 compensates
5G No Optus 5G low-band support – Optus 5G users need to look elsewhere"

Released two years ago with Android 11, but should get Android 13 update.

I don't really care about media playback but I have dodgy hearing so a low volume handsfree speaker combined with lack of headphone options could be the deal breaker for me.

Every deal I regret missing out on that G82! lol.

    • Thanks for the brief review. That Optus 5G support is really important for me.

      • I'm on currently on ColesMobile which uses Optus, and I've accrued a fair bit of rollover data so I'm not inclined to change needlessly.
Coles only supports 4G at the moment, but I reckon it must expand into 5G before too long.
I guess this phone wouldn't really be future proof for me either.

Oh well, back to wating for a killer phone deal to come up.

    • So for your $500 you are getting…..? What exactly?

    • It seems to support all the Optus 5G bands except n278/26Ghz. As far as I can tell no Motorolas do.

Anyone care to share thoughts on the camera?

If you read several comments above, you'd notice a few shared their thoughts on the camera..

Had to chime in…quick brain dump

tl;dr one of the best cameras available

If it does have the 108MP camera as stated in the OP, then it has a Samsung S5KHMX as its' main shooter. As far as I remember, it's one of only two non-Xiaomi phone to end up with this sensor.

Phone cameras usually only output 12MP no matter what the advertised resolution, as the manufacturers combine pixels together for more light.
With this sensor though, they only apply quad binning, which means this puts out 27MP - more than double the resolution of most other phone.

Some manufacturers offer 50MP/100MP shots, but they're in JPEG only. If you like to shoot in RAW, this means you have double the res to play with and can edit as you see fit.

It is a phenomenal camera, especially when paired with a modded copy of Google Camera installed. We have three phones in the family with this sensor (Xiaomi Mi10, Mi10 Pro, Mi10T Pro) and it's what has stopped us upgrading to anything sooner.

Look up Xiaomi Mi10 Camera in Telegram for groups that can assist further with getting the best out of it.

      • On paper it looks good but let down by the software. Moto camera app is shit and getting the autofocus to autofocus properly is hard. I ended up finding a GCam port and it's been better since then.

        • So camera still not good compare to Samsung?

          • +1

@kaikor: Samsung have better software for sure. GCam makes Samsung and Motorola better.

      • How's recording video in tough situations eg concerts?

    • +2

Not from personal use, but from reviews, the camera is weak for it's original price point.
I mentioned file sise above but apparently pics are downsampled from 108MP to 12MP, so it won't be as bad as I initially thought.

General review is the main camera is decent in good light. But mediocre in other conditions and features.

"While shots in bright daylight look sharp, vivid and colourful, there is a noticeable loss of detail when you use the telephoto lens or shoot in low light conditions. Edges (ironically) start to blur and surfaces and textures appear smooth and dull. If the lighting is too low, you’ll also start seeing a disturbing amount of graining.

This is also the case for the 32Mp front-facing camera. You’ll be fine if you’re in a well-lit room or in daylight, but there is a loss of detail and added grain if you’re in less favourable light.
In some instances, I also found that in portrait mode struggled to consistently blur the background, resulting in a blotchy effect in the foreground!" - the image in the article is quite poor.

Motorola are well known for weak cameras, unfortunately - I'd love to have a decent one at a mid-range price.
On my current Moto G, I took group photos at a recent team dinner and the people on the edge of the group are distorted and out of focus. They aren't even right at the edge of the frame. Sadly it doesn't sound as though these issues are any better with this phone despite it's boasts.

      • +1

I have this phone and i agree with you. The camera seems more like a xiaomi mid-ranger compared to samsung and apple's cameras even though this was supposedly motorola's flagship.

    • +2

Camera is crap, no way near flagship. If you want it for the camera look elsewhere. Rest of the phone is great.

  • +1

Good deal but not as good as the the edge 30 pro deal last year

  • Good phone for the money.
I have the 30 pro and honestly wouldnt pay that money again as theres little difference in the real world between spending $1000 or $500 not worth the difference

  • +1

JB had Motorola Edge 30 pro for $499 last year very briefly. Not sure if that will come down in near future.

  • Any gift card deals at the moment?

  • +4

    Too bad no SD card

  • +3

Official LineageOS support but no headphone jack or microsd slot. I know few still care about these, but I'm holding out a bit longer.

Looks like a great deal otherwise.

    • +1

Interesting that it doesn't have LineageOS 20 support but the Edge 20 does:
      * Edge 20 Pro: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/pstar/
      * Edge 20: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/berlin/

I've hear negative things about the LineageOS 19 camera app

      • Camera issues go all the way back to CyanogenMod days, but I thought this was a prominently a Samsung issue. Maybe it is all phones.

    • Is there still any flagship that still has micro SD card slot?

    • This is why I'm still using my 5 year old LG v30+. Haven't found any new phones with quad DAC and 3.5mm port. Bluetooth does not compare, especially when connected to an amp. Also the camera still bangs with Gcam.

First phone I've considered replacing the battery for as phone technology has reached a level of diminishing returns.

  • Just got 2 of these for my grandparents. Super nice phone. Comparable to my pixel 6 pro, almost feels faster when I was setting them up. Highly recommend

How many more years of security updates on this? This is almost a 2 year old phone.

    • +4

      Security updates till August 2023
      Launched in August 2021

      • +1

I wanted to jump on this but our corporate security policies block devices not patched in the previous 6 months - pity.

      • +2

Too short if you ask me when comparing with Samsung, Google & Apple offering 5 to 7 years.
Can't justify spending $500 on a phone with only 2 years of security updates when it's already at year 2 of release.

  • What do we think the 30 Ultra will be selling for in a few months?

    • +1

      Hopefully around $700

    • Security updates for 30 Ultra up to Sep 2026

      • Nice!

  • How does this compare to the Google Pixel 6a for the same price?

  • I wonder if there any chance of it getting Android 14.

  • Inb4 this ain't flagship spec etc

    • +2

It was when it came out 2 years ago but camera isn't flagship worthy.

  • Unsure anyone can help with this but figured I'd ask!

I have a Huawei Mate 20 pro which has been brilliant for 4 years. I figure at some point I'll look to change and this at least seems a good price/spec.
Can anyone advise if this camera would be better or worse than the Huawei?

  • +1

Pretty good consider you get local warranty specs looks good I think interface is clean

  • How important are security updates if you don't use public wifi? What are the chances of your bank account being hacked? And wouldn't the bank reimburse you anyway?

  • +3

The camera is disappointing on this phone.

My partner and I both own this phone, which I upgraded too after my Samsung S9+ charging port died. The good thing about us both buying this phone is I can tell what could be a solo defect or what is actually wrong with the phone. And for my situation personally, If I could go back in time, I would definitely have wished that I just paid to fix the port. Despite the fact that the Samsung was released in 2018 and the Motorola, 2021, the camera does not compete at all with the Samsung in both hardware and software. It is nowhere near as quick to gain focus and when it does, it just isn't as clear and sharp as the S9+. The camera was a major disappointment and another testament to the fact that big megapixel number means nothing really (108MP vs 12MP on paper).

    • Facts. Thank you for sharing. Personally, I've had a negative experience with Motorola.
Unless it's a budget burner phone no complaints there, but for a main phone shop elsewhere.

    • +1

If you care about camera than the pixel 6a probably the best phone around this price

  • This ? or Poco F4 5g ?

    • Edge 20 Pro has stock android but it will only get android 13 so Poco f4 is better because of the custom rom support. If you don't want to flash custom rom, edge 20 pro is better. You would also get 1 year warranty from jbhifi with this.

      • I ordered Poco F4 5g and waiting for the delivery. I hope I made a good decision.

  • Done - just ordered. Thanks for the heads up, OP.

  • Thanks, OP.
Got one in-store and split the payment with 15% off Ultimate Gift Cards from Coles.
Online does not accept split payments using Ultimate Gift Cards.

  • you almost need a database to query when a phone was launched, how long its getting updates and also security updates as well as a list of supported alternatives like linos!

  • any point to buying this phone if the updates stop in ~6 months?
<and I have no desire to custom rom it>

  • I have been using this phone for the past 6 months. It's a great phone for the price but the software support for this phone is only 2 years. This phone was released in 2021 so the last update will be Android 13.
