I ordered one last night and got my Aus Post shipping confirmation this morning.

Cancelled my PCByte order because this is cheaper and actually in the country.

    $745.34 tops.

      Thats oddly specific.

      • +2

It was the last Steam Deck deal I posted.

        • +1

          Fair enough.

  • +4

since when Aussies need to pay $798 for 399USD? Even with tax and delivery fee, it is too expensive.

    • +3

Grey imports. Resellers want their cut.

      • +1

I would prefer to get everything by myself from US, definitely be cheaper

        • +6

          It's not offensively terrible.

$399US, shipped to a tax free state, around $80US to the shipping company. That's around $480US, which is about $720AU.

You also get a warranty and eBay protection,

          • @DASHCAM NOW DUDE: You are also not covering the fact that these dealers don't pay RRP and get it at a Distributor Price and are buying in bulk to increase savings further.
$399USD // $597AUD is RRP they could be getting a saving of 10% if not more depending who the customer is.

So even if it is 10% off thats now $537.3AUD for the Unit + Shipping & Taxes so lets just put the 10% right back in so we are back at $597AUD Landed.
Add another 15% for Profit and its now $686 - Thats still $100 off list price.

@JPNx: The margins of resellers is irrelevant.

There are only 2 prices that matter to the buyer. The resellers retail price and the self import price.

            • @JPNx: There are no distributor prices for the steam deck because Valve currently have no distributors in the United States, only in Europe and the Asian countries that they’re opening up to soon.

These certainly are not coming from those markets.

Even then I would be highly surprised if they offered distributor savings on a product they’re making such small margins on.

  • People saying why get Switch when you can get this, I say why get this when you can get the much better models

    • +2

Other model steamdecks or other portable emulator man?

    • +2

The better models are much more expensive and the SD community is way more active.

    • +6

Better models are 256gb, which is effectively the same as the 64gb but has bigger storage, and the 512gb, which has a nicer screen coating. I've updated my 64gb model with a 1tb drive which has worked out cheaper than buying a 256gb model.

      • I think he meant steam deck competitors? Which are much more expensive.

    • +2

Do you mean aya neos? Oh i dunno.. maybe because they’re $2000, have software that barely works, comes with bloatware and is probably going to be end of life by the time it arrives to your house because they pump out a new model with barely any changes every 3 months.

Oh and even then they get beat out in lots of areas by the SD… many feel
they wouldn’t trade their $400 usd Deck for the $1300 usd ayaneo

      • +2

Would trust SD to provide better long term support. Even with inferior hardware.

    • An anti-glare screen protector will give the same benefit of their anti-glare screen (and also protect your screen), and load times are almost the same when using an SD card (or you can upgrade storage yourself).

64GB model is def the way to go

Man I wish Valve would do a official release soon. these prices from grey sellers are too high.

    • +1

There have been prices closer to $700, lowest I've seen is $710. Which would probably be close to what Valve would charge us anyway. So you're probably not going to save that much in the end.

      • but you would get official warranty and support

who know what these sellers warranty are like..
would these sellers send the item back the store/seller they bought it from overseas
then that store/seller sends it to valve for warranty?

        • Sure that's true but if the Deck is something you'd use today, how many more months are you willing to wait? Until the 2nd anniversary of its release?

Valve has pushed consumers in regions like ours to buy from other sources, or buy alternative PC handhelds.

Maybe some others can comment on returns through a seller like Kogan or these other resellers, maybe it's not so bad but I can't comment on it personally.

          • @CUD: Or you can wait for steam deck refresh with oled

            • @DrScavenger: Lol yeah, might happen at some point.
I ended up getting an AYANEO 2 myself, while not OLED the screen is great and overall I prefer the design over the Deck.

            • @DrScavenger: Not happening any time soon per valves own words.

  • Sold out. What happened to the $700 ones from kogan a while ago :(

    • I don't think these were ever $700 lowest I seen it was $745 and that was on eBay

Just a PSA, if you buy the 64gb you will eventually run out of space on the internal drive. Even if you install all your games on a micro sd card. SteamOS installs shader cache for every game you play onto the internal drive. You will have to upgrade. But it will still be cheaper than buying the bigger versions from the start.

    • I have a SD and nvme sitting here waiting to be installed hahah

    • I've read you can change the path of the shader cache using Cryoutilities 2.0. So you don't necessarily need to upgrade the internal SSD at all.

      • Yes I’ve read that too but I’ve also read that some games will perform very badly if that shader cache is not on an SSD. You can get a 256gb for around $50 so definitely worth it. I’ve got a 1tb for $170.
