Interesting bit of kit, and I'm sure it's a good price; but short of using it to transport my Iron Man suit to Afghanistan to battle insurgents, I can't see a practical use for it myself! ;)

    • +1

haha, I don't have any use for it either, looks like overkill to me! thought someone on here might make some good use of it though :)

    • +2

Could use it to pack my nephews nerf gun when we fly international

  • +1

    what is this used for?

edit - Ok after reading the reviews on Amazon it is used for transporting expensive cameras. Also, used for transporting alcohol.

    • I believe lot of people use them to transport expensive camera / video / audio equipment.

    • +9

Thanks, I suspected it wasn't for transporting pelicans. :)

When you're a professional photographer (this is especially true for fashion photographers) the two go hand-in-hand.

  • "15 lbs 3.0 oz (6.88kg)"

Good luck putting your gear in it and passing the weight test!

But Pelican make some great products, though it may not be suitable for every application and everyday user.

    • thanks for this. I was considering getting one but now I'm glad I didn't.

      Last wedding I photographed didn't have a weight test…

why would you be using such a case for a wedding is beyond me. its not exactly portable nor would you need the protection from travel.

        • -4

You are showing yourself up as clueless

        • +1

I'm not a full time photog but even with about 20K worth of gear, i don't rock up to a wedding shoot with a suitcase. 4 lenses, 2 bodies, 2 flashes + batteries + cards will fit into a normal bag pack like a kata 3n1-30/33. Less bulkier to move between locations and keeps your hands free in case you need to take any shots on the move. Would you find yourself needing to let go of the pelican to pick up one of the cameras to take a shot? One extra movement. Worrying your pelican case will roll down the hill/slope if you're on one?

"Obviously you're showing yourself up as clueless". Back atcha.

        • These cases are more about transporting your gear in transit rather than when you're at a shoot. You wouldn't want to put 20k of gear into check-in in that kata bag would you?
Besides you wouldn't be carrying all your gear whilst actually taking the shots. You'd probably leave it in the car or in a room somewhere and only carry the 2-3 bodies with the lenses and attachments required.

        • I was stating about the wedding bit.

But in anycase. I covered a baptism in in italy and a wedding in bangkok and all my gear except my flashes and AA batteries, wireless triggers, reflectors, softboxes etc. They all fit into my kata which was carried on. Weighed in at about 16+ kgs and i told them it's 15k worth of camera gear (I don't bring all my gear, just the essentials). They let me on without a hitch.

I don't know about you, but personally i wouldn't check in my camera gear. Regardless of heavy insurance coverage or not. Reaching your destination and having to scramble to rent/buy gear for the shoot is not my idea of fun.

    • They rarely ever weigh your carry on anyway. I regularly travel with 10-15kg carry on on Qantas and Virgin and have never had any issues apart from once when they (Qantas?) decided to weigh it and it was a bit over 10kg. I apologised and acted clueless and they just told me to pack lighter next time then let me take the bag on board.

You do know that what your doing is quite dangerous right?

        • -1

Do they weigh passengers these days?

        • +5

Do they weigh passengers these days?

Irrelevant. The danger is having heavy objects in the overhead compartments in turbulence or an accident.

Exactly, over weight plane is one thing but if those latches arent designed for that much weight during turbulence it could easily injury someone seriously.

Exactly, over weight plane is one thing but if those latches arent designed for that much weight during turbulence it could easily injury someone seriously.

Oh please, that's absolute bs. You can fit roughly 2-3 large pieces of carry-on luggage in each overhead compartment, sometimes 4 depending on the plane. The allowance for each piece of carry-on luggage is 7-10kg depending on which class you're flying and with what airline. This means that each compartment can hold at least 30-40kg without any issues.

The carry-on weight restrictions are mainly in place to prevent people from bringing excess luggage on board with them as there's enough people doing so as-is. Obviously safety is also a factor in the restrictions, but not as big a factor as you think.

Just wondering; Have you ever seen an overhead compartment burst open mid-flight? In my 20 years flying I have only ever seen it a couple of times and they were all because the compartments hadn't been closed properly or something was left hanging out.

If it makes you feel any better I usually use a whole compartment to myself (I fly off-peak so there's usually plenty of room).

        • If everyody thought your way then there will be no need for checked-in luggage!

If you fly the refurbished Qantas 747-800 business class you will see the over head can hardly fit anything as they have shrinked it to make more head room available, they may have planned to have standing passangder too:)

        • Happened to me one time on landing. I assume the thing wasn't closed properly and this heavy briefcase landed on my right armrest, less than a centimeter from my hand. I was glad it missed or I would probably have the scars still.

surely this all pales into insignificance once you factor in how much everyone weighs, and how there is tremendous difference between highs and lows of what a human can weigh.

I take offence at being charged $25 or more for excess baggage charges, when I'm sitting next to a human who weighs 30kg or more heavier than me.

I think the only fair thing is to charge combined personal and luggage weight. Surely it's the net total weight that matters, isn't it?

OK civil libertarians, I've started, now give it back to me!

        • Hah I weigh approx 150kg.. I love the feeling of the bargain I get when flying my fat ass around ;)

        • @thackleberry, now that's the OzB spirit! :)

FWIW, my mate's sister & BIL were big folks too, they used to get free upgrades back in the day! ;)

        • -1

@thackleberry ..thats disgusting, get to the gym.

        • Some of you guys obviously aren't fans of Air Crash Investigations. A couple of crashes that spring to mind due to overloading or under estimating weight are:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Midwest_Flight_5481 and (I think) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrow_Air_Flight_1285 where it was suggested the estimated weight of the passengers and carry-on was grossly inaccurate, because the chartered aircraft was carrying 256 returning US service personnel and their combat equipment. So it's not an irrelevant argument, or an overhead locker capacity issue.

      • I fly on at least 4 int flights a year n every time they weigh my hand luggage including my 6 year olds backpack. Flying mostly Singapore, Emirates , etihad.

        • I should have mentioned that I fly domestic, sorry. I guess it depends on the airline though because when I flew intl. on Hawaiian Airlines a few months back they didn't bother weighing anything me or my accomplices had.

  • i got a very similar case to this and i use it to transport my laptop screent and all my other junk when i go overseas

  • A good price but not really a deal - it's Amazon's normal price. http://camelcamelcamel.com/Pelican-1510-Case-Camera-Desert/p…
    Probably better in the forums.
