Anyone else getting some muppet hippie saying seed oils are "inflamation in the cell causing" blah blah more and more in their social media feeds recently? He's Aussie too I think.

I believe most refined vegetable/seed oils are varying levels of 'not good for you' depending on how you use them, especially with heat.

Polyunsaturated fats at high heat are known to be not good, and that's what grapeseed oil is high in… as well as others that are similar like canola etc… But what's a good alternative?

For high temperature use… probably avocado is the best, but that's probably 3x the price of this deal at least for same qty… so… yeah

Either way I think in most cases olive oil is the way to go unless you're deep frying or heating close to smoke point (~170-190C). A cheap olive oil is only a bit more expensive in most cases (e.g. woolies homebrand EVOO for $11 and likely to be far better and more nutritious for you overall.

PSA: don't buy extra virgin olive oil if you're only using it for cooking. You're just gonna heat all the good stuff out of it anyway. Just get the cheap regular olive oil.

      I'll stop typing now

      • You’re awesome
        Thanks

      • I learnt something today, thanks :)

      • so what's good for everyday cooking eg frying eggs etc

        • Coconut oil

          • @haru: Coconut is high in saturated fats, might as well use beef tallow or pork suet.

            • @Mickalmus:

Coconut is high in saturated fats

Yes, the good kind.. MCT oil is pure saturated fat and that is considered a superfood, which by the way is extracted from coconut oil.

Rice bran oil has a relatively high smoke point and isn't too expensive either

        • I've found rice bran to be much better than grapeseed, both in terms of less residue on cookware and only needing the smallest amount.

From a reputable source I can cite that it isn't bad for you at all. Care to share your citations?

But with so much misinformation out there it's hard to decipher everything. Here's a fun fact: Oxygen is carcinogenic. If you don't have oxygen you won't get cancer! 🤦

  • Seed oils are "inflamation in the cell causing" blah blah

  • Is this any good for making mayonnaise?

  • anyone using an airstill or similar, grape seed oil is a cheaper alternative to distilling conditioner that they try and sell you.
