Use this thing every week, recommend it, especially for this price.

  • How does this one compare to the Instant Pots?

    • +2

I prefer instant pot with the air fryer lid. The lid is a bit inconvenient to store but I now use that function more than just using the pot as a pressure cooker.

I've got the 8L one which can properly airfry / bake a medium sized chicken (1-1.5kg).

      • +1

We bought the InstantPot Pro Crisp 8L and we use it just about every day. It really is a game changer device.

        • What kind of meals do you cook in it? We have a small, ancient oven and am looking for alternatives as we are in a rental.

          • @Scrobo: We do Yoghurt. Corned beef, lamb shank soup, rice, fish fillets, pies, risotto, porridge, stews, poached chicken, corn cobs, macaroni cheese etc. Do a Google on Instant Pot and almost anything and there is, usually, a recipe. The crisper version can even bake a cake, but I haven’t tried it yet.

A multicooker would be good for a rental place.

If you are a Costco member they often have specials on the Instant Pot and other Multicookers. You have 90 days to return it if you don’t like it.

These two are probably not available now but worth looking.

            • @try2bhelpful: Meat pies? How is the crust?

Sounds intriguing, just worried I'd not use it.

              • @Scrobo: We do it on the crisper. You need to be careful you don’t burn the crust.

We, already, had the 5.7l InstantPot, and I had to arm wrestle the man to buy the 8L Pro crisper version, but we do use two at once. We’ve now got solar panels so we’ve moved our Yogurt making from overnight to during the day. We can still use the Pro one to cook lunch with. We make batches of spag bol and freeze serves. Today the man pressure cooked some sweet potatoes to make mash for a cottage pie with the spag bol. It was delicious.

Things like lamb shank soup are dead easy. If you want I can give you a recipe.

I was having to choose between this and the Instant Pot Duo Nova 8L a while back:
      https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07Y1Y2Q4M/ref=ppx_yo_d…

In the end, got the Instantpot because:
      * Came with a stainless steel pot - Philips was an extra expense
      * Instantpot has low and high slow cooker setting, Philips does not. It just boggles my mind why it doesnt have low and high setting…
      * Can buy a glass lid for the Instantpot for slow cooking, works great

      Love mine, zero regrets.

      • If you took the post-cashback price into account, would you have changed your mind? I've hit order on Amazon but having some second thoughts… Will probably mostly just pressure cook though.

        • +4

I'm pretty sure I would still prefer the instant pot:
          * The lid can 'slot' onto the rim, keeping the lid out of the way when opened. Philips does not have that, you just have to dump it on your bench somewhere.
          * Still have to buy a stainless steel pot, so essentially add $40 to your price and its about the same really - I got the Iinstant Pot for $152 at the time but it has gone down as low as $139 before
          * I did actually purchase the Philips but took it back after realising the slow cooker thing. The Instant Pot is lower with a wider base (only slightly) but I find it easier to sear meat in where as the Philips was narrower and taller - which I would have found more annoying.
          * Instant Pot has a separate release valve button, so i dont have to go near the release port/steam. Philips button IS the valve, so I think you just have to dodge the steam/hot water when releasing. I'm just guessing t this though, have not used it myself.
          * You get two sealant(?) rings that go around the edge of the inner lid with Instantpot, think you only get one with the Philips? Happy to be corrected if wrong.

So yeah, pretty happy with my choice overall.

          • @Arcticfox: Thanks for the comprehensive reply! I've cancelled my order and I'm waiting for a deal on the Instant Pot now.

I don't mind not having the slow cooker function but everything else you've mentioned is something I hadn't thought of when comparing the two, but I would definitely get annoyed about if I had bought the Philips. Thanks!

      • Can buy a glass lid for the Instantpot for slow cooking, works great

You must use the glass lid for slow cooking, otherwise that function doesn't work that well.

        • It worked good enough for me before I got the glass lid, just do this:
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GS0ujV931eA&ab_channel=AMind…

          • @Arcticfox: that only explains how to use the slow cooker function, the glass lid makes a massive difference for slow cooking.

            • @TEER3X: Yeah, I'm just saying you can still use it to slow cook. It's not like you cannot slow cook in it without the glass lid.
But glass lid works better - which is why I ended up buying it.

Ordered. Now need to confirm if the wife wants it or not.
She did mention instant pot previously.

  • This is a very good and reliable unit!

  • +1

What is the pot accessory good for?

    • same question here

  • Mind you this one is 8l. Too big!

  • Is 6L part of cash back promo ?

    • Doesn't look like

  • I see you can get a stainless steel pot for it. Has anyone tried cooking rice in stainless steel pot insert? Or will it just burn?

    • +1

We cook rice with our Instant Pot and it doesn’t burn on the stainless steel.

    • +2

I've used my Philips with stainless steel for rice and to my surprise it worked out better than our dedicated rice cooker.

    • Have only used the non stick pot to cook rice and it does the job. However in my experience, I feel the rice comes out fluffier/more volume in our Panasonic rice cooker

  • +2

Any PFOAs or is it all stainless steel?

    • “ProCeramic+ coated pot”

    • You can buy steel but it's extra

  • Anyone concerned about arsenic levels of eating so much rice?

    • I looked into it, it isn't really an issue if you eat white rice, the arsenic concentrates in the outside layers which are removed.

You can also aim to consume locally grown rice (harder to find than you would expect, look for Koala brand at the supermarket), as there are some minimum standards to pesticide use that wouldn't be followed overseas

    • +1

I will direct your question to some old asian guy about this. Stay tuned.

    • Japanese people have one of the world's longest life expectancies & rice is a big part of Japanese diet.

  • How would this go primarily as a rice cooker ($13 kmart one died)? With doing other meals on the side

    • Probably be overkill as it's very big, unless you cook heaps of rice. You could do Pot in Pot and cook mukltiple dishes at the same time though

      • Yeah look 8L definitely isnt necessary. More just about finding something 'decent' that doesnt break the bank

    • +1

This is what I started using after my rice cooker died. I already had it but hadn't used it for rice. I love it now as it's 1 appliance that does multiple things properly. Soups, rice, pasta sauces, curries, cakes. And I don't even cook half the things that you could in it. I still use another small pressure cooker for legumes tho, as I still haven't gotten the timings right.

  • +1

Ymmv but i have had to replace the proceramic coated pot a few times. The coating doesnt last too long when pressure cooking or high temp searing.

The stainless steel pots are great and we use these for everything except sear

  • Thanks OP, bought one

  • Bought one as been wanting a rice cooker, figure I may like some of the other features. Hopefully isn't too big…

    • Maybe this lady is tiny but it does look like a behemoth, may be overkill for rice

      https://youtu.be/gk_hDzWUZHU

      • Hmm it sure does. Looks like I'll be using the other features then.

      • It's pretty huge compared to the others, I upgraded from the 6L but feel like this is too big

        • Yeah ended up cancelling and I'll get a 5.7L instant pot instead.

    • Well, it's called the XXL pressure cooker.

  • Bought one too. Thanks.

    • +1

      There's a link in the OP…

  • Bought one, thanks

I checked the reviews on amazon, it seems quite common that the rust build up on edge after 6 month. I will pass

    • +3

I’ve had mine for over a year and never experienced this. Sound like they aren’t cleaning and drying the lid properly.

  • It's been alright for over 7 years. But now the unit reset itself in the middle of slow cook or pressure cook. I wonder wether it's the time to order a new one.

  • No manual mode is really annoying. Most presets have a minimum time restriction. Meaning you can't pressure cook on high for 15 minutes for example. To pressure cook on high you have to use the beef setting where the minimum pressure cook time is 30 minutes. It's a bit restrictive.

  • Great for dried beans. Mine has a manual mode. I don't really understand all the presets.

  • $349 @ TGG….. has anyone succeeded with price matching Amazon @tgg? Have store cash that needs to be used…

  • How does Philips Cashback works? Do I need to buy something from Philips to use the Cashback?

    • +1

It gets paid into your bank account shortly after once you submit a claim

  • The inner pot only lasted 1 year with very mild use, like once a month. It's now losing the ceramic. I ordered the stainless steel replacement today.

  • We have the smaller HD2137/72, paid $143 in 2016, using it few times a week, so it is well worth it.

Tempted to get this but maybe a bit too big (larger footprint, also possibly takes longer to build up pressure and to release pressure).

  • Stopped working after an year. Service centre is too slow

  • Bought this 5.7l Crockpot express today for $99 45% off

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07FKQ8JLM/ref=ppx_yo_d…

Product review has it at 4.1 vs the phillips at 4.5

  • Too bad there's no sous vide function

  • +1

Has anyone else had trouble with the Phillips cashback?

"Unfortunately, your Philips Mother’s Day 2023 cashback claim for the HD2238/72 - All-In-One XL Multi Cooker and $100 cashback has been declined for the following reason/s.
    Reason: Product not listed."

    • +1

Yep just got the same thing…

EDIT: Gave them a call to the 1300 number in the rejection email, asked them to look at it again and was approved immediately.

      • so philips approved your claim after you called them?

        • yup, immediately

This is the website and it definitely seems to be named.

      • philips cashback website is model 2238/72, it is the same to amazon purchase link?

        • HD2238/72, Silver

          Cut from Amazon website.

          • @try2bhelpful: what do you mean?

            Amazon Website:

            Model Number: HD2238/72
            Color: Silver

            Philips Website:
            HD2238/72
The color in the image is silver from my eye

            • @jjj123: This reminds me of Kenny Everett with “I’ve been taking to Kate Bush and she’s been talking to someone else”. I think I will retire.
