i have the 100W model. the thing is always warm, very warm, even with very little draw on it, it is VERY warm. it is cool with nothing is plugged into it.
is it normal? if not ill get the 65w one.

    • +35

So you're saying its warm right?

      • +1

just measured with a probe, it is 51c. and it has my laptop plugged into it with like 0.2w drawing from the cable with read-outs.

        • +16

If it's "idling" at 51c that means it's wasting a huge amount of power (assuming your room is reasonably comfortable, 25c or so)

Also means it's designed like absolute garbage.

          • @incipient: i should get a power meter to read it from wall, so i know how much watt goes into heating itself up.

everything is fine, charges great, its just this warmth got me worried, althought it has been more than a year now, and i have always plugged something into it.

i just wonder is it just me or everyone.

            • @Hornpub: It would be single digit watts.

            • @Hornpub: I have 2 of the 100W with something always plugged in for the past 2 months. Never had the temperature issue you have described.

          • @incipient: My one doesn't get that hot when using the ac sockets as long as no USBs are plugged in.

          • @incipient: and defeats one of the benefits of GaN that it's supposed to run cooler.

      • VERY warm

    • +1

Free heating in the colder months!

In all seriousness + hindsight, wouldn't touch this again with a 10 foot pole.

    • +3

65 doesn't get that warm, had all 4 ports in use and it was mild.

    • I thought GaN chargers are supposed to be cool

      • +1

No, they're supposed to be efficient, and as a secondary benefit cooler, but as to how warm it gets varies, one small component or joint not up to scratch will affect efficiency and so will it's temp. The idea sounds valid, but it's all anecdotal and a bit of marketing.

    • I have the 100w one. Same experience as you. Very warm when any of the USB ports are in use. Aside from that, works fine.

    • I have the 100W model too. I just measured it, it's about 1 degree above ambient at the mains cable end and about 2 degrees above ambient at the USB port end. There is nothing plugged into it. The 65W one I have is the same.

  • +1

Only issue is the uninsulated plugs but apart from that a really rock solid charger.

Illegal to be sold in Australia. It's legal for you to buy from BG and use for yourself.

        • -3

Call me crazy but I would never risk my life and property with a mains-powered accessory from a dodgy Chinese dropship brand.

        • Illegal to be sold in Australia

They are also being sold via eBay AU and Amazon AU as well. Surely, that is not legal as per AS/NZS 3112.
The authorities don't seem to care?

It wouldn't be a big issue if they made the cord figure 8 compatible.

          • -2

@DoctorCalculon: Marketplaces are a grey area. The sellers themselves are in China.

But we're not talking Amazon or ebay as that's not what this deal is.

            • -1

              @Clear:

But we're not talking Amazon or ebay as that's not what this deal is.

So, are you saying if an unwitting customer bought the non-compliant product from an AU based seller via a marketplace, is it still a grey area?

              • +4

@DoctorCalculon: Nope that's not even close to what I said. If an unwitting customer bought a non-compliant product from an overseas store on a marketplace they (the customer) has not broken the law. If an AU based seller is selling non-compliant products, then they are breaking the law.

You ought to go out and report them instead of arguing it here where nothing is achieved.

  • +3

It's like they are making every crazy permutation possible to see what sticks.

    https://au.banggood.com/Baseus-PowerCombo-2500W-3-Outlets-Po…

    Just… why?

    • I dig the retractable cable!

    • Why is it crazy? This is pretty useful for people who have laptops that they dock onto the same spot/area frequently.

      • Because that purpose could just as well be filled with a normal format charger and a replaceable cable, without the risk of the (probably cheaply made) moving part with ratchet mechanism failing over the years.

I want my chargers to last the life of the device. Which in the case of a laptop tends to be 10+ years.

    • that looks amazing! completely dig it. the tower I find is a pretty practical design and you basically eliminate the overcrowding of bulk chargers and takes up less footprint

    • +1

I have this one and I like it very much - the unit itself has this micro suction pad that sticks very well to my tabletop, and the retractable cable means I can keep my desk clear. I have other retractable USB-C to USB-C cables, but the baseus one is far sturdier as I can extend the cable one handed, whereas the standalone cables tend to let go at the USB-C plug if you extend them without holding the other end.

Also the vertical form factor saves lots of desk space while still providing 2 AC plugs (+1 two prong US plug… For some reason). I wish the other USB ports were positioned lower as cables look a bit messy hanging off them from that high, but other than that it's a winner!

Definitely is a risk that the cable could fail before the charger does, but FWIW it's a pretty sturdy cable (for a retractable flat one that is) and the ratchet seems solid. So I'll take the risk in exchange for the increased day-to-day convenience.

FWIW if you're handy you could try and replace the cable yourself. The other end of the retractable cable actually plugs in to an internal Type C socket, but within the retractable cable module is a slip ring. The end of the loose cable terminates in accessible solder contacts on the wiper PCB.

  • Ordered for $19 USD as Bang-good decided to give out coupons, recently got the Anker Gan charger from Amazon for 59 and missed out on the blitzwolf deals

Also was throwing up on this
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Anker-6-Port-Charger-Powerport-iPhone/dp/B00P936188/?encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=FQiDn&content-id=amzn1.sym.8efd3ab0-df69-4a8c-a281-260d246ad841&pf_rd_p=8efd3ab0-df69-4a8c-a281-260d246ad841&pf_rd_r=DBJPC6FQ4RTK9911WMW6&pd_rd_wg=6Izfm&pd_rd_r=6ecf0d64-d21e-439c-9b2a-fb93a647ce25&ref=pd_gw_ci_mcx_mr_hp_atf_m

As ive been impressed with the Anker quality.

Not figure 8 Cable, cable not removable. Pretty bulky imo.

    • My exact thoughts. Does anyone know of a 65W desktop charger like this Baseus one, but with removable figure 8 cable (for convenience/travel)? This Anker charger looks perfect if only it charged at 65W (max 45W unfortunately). Can't find anything 65W with figure 8 charging, from a reputable brand :(

      • +1

Is this 75W desktop charger OK for you, it does support 65W output and uses detachable figure-8 power cord.

        • Thanks - I think this is the same one that went on sale recently. The downside to the BlitzWolf one you linked is that it doesn't have the GaN technology so it is big and heavy. Looking for one with GaN technology so its small/light - but GaN on 65W desktop/removable figure-8 chargers is just a blind spot among all the reputable brands at the moment for some reason.

      • Some of the anker chargers were discounted last week and was throwing up if it was worth getting this exact charger.

        • +2

You sure do throw up a lot….

        • Yeah that's what kick-started my investigations. Didn't go ahead with the Anker one I linked because it was only 45W. I wish they had a 65W one…

      • two options that are maybe not as compact as the linked 543 ("Atom") charger are the Anker 525 and Anker 615.

Compared to the Anker 525, the 615 is more compact/light-weight with built-in storage for power cord but has one less USB-B port and is more difficult to buy in Australia.

As chargers to bring when traveling, both are excellent (615 more so due to its weight being lighter). You have a mini power board and multiple USB charging ports.

At the time of writing, the Anker 525 can be brought easily on eBay.

        • +1

Thanks, they look like cool options. Though I am looking for chargers that have removable 8-figure cords, so they can be swapped between countries easily without need for adapters, like the Anker 543 (only with 65W via USB-C). This Belkin 108W is alright, if only it weren't so big/heavy.

          • @JimmyLmao: What port configuration do you need? There is another that came to mind though not sure if worth mentioning, the mBeat Gorilla Power. It only has 1 USB-C though and only reaches 60W (PD 2.0) on that port, the other 4 are USB-A QC 3.0 ports. It's an older device, not GaN but not terribly heavy (238g). It was going for $69 last week, but I think even at that price it's a little high given the older spec and price of GaN devices these days and probably better to have more USB-C ports going forward.

            • @bamzero: That looks pretty decent actually, if only that USB-C port gave out an extra 5W!!
You're right though, an extra USB-C port wouldn't hurt, and the price could be cheaper.

      • Jury still out on the reliability of this one but specs fit the bill..

        • Yeah the dimensions on that one look alright - would be curious to know the weight. But as you said, the big question is reliability/safety - I'm honestly happy to spend the money on a reputable brand for something that won't burn the house down or electically damage my devices - there just doesn't seem to be any options.

      • +1

Aohi magcube and kobol are 120w with exactly the same dimension/ layout/ style with figure 8

        • https://iaohi.com/products/aohi-magcube-65w-desktop-charger-… - Thanks, this was looking like it ticked most boxes, confused what the weight is though as they list 2 different weights. If it's 0.44lb (200g) then that would be pretty decent. Never heard of the brand before - so would need to research. But then I discovered it lists input voltage as 110… Needs to be 100-240 to work worldwide, so annoying.

          • @JimmyLmao: Perhaps you can get it from their AliExpress store

            AC Input: 100-240V~ 50/60Hz 2A Max
            Dimension: 4.5x4.5x7.5cm
            Weight: 200g

            • @O O: Ahh okay looks like it does support 100-240V which is good. Still sceptical of the Aohi brand/reliability… I'm gonna hold off a couple of months to see what reputable brands come out with before buying.

              • +2

@JimmyLmao: Aohi are very well known and reputable. Just not in the west. They’ve been around for a long time, and don’t copy/rebrand products, nearly everything theirs is custom designed both outside and inside.

I’ve opened up several of their batteries and chargers and they are very well made with most of the best practices, safety systems and modern design considerations you should expect.

I would really suggest their 120w version even if you dont need that much juice. Having the overhead helps with performance and helps avoid juggling which connectors offer how much.

Kobol, I have no idea. Baseus are always good, and are a much larger scale even though Id argue Aohi have been around much longer.

    • Not figure 8 Cable, cable not removable. Pretty bulky imo.

Yeah, it's a short extension lead with a charger on the end. If you need such a thing (e.g. socket is inaccessible behind a bed/desk/cabinet at home or in a hotel), this will take up less space than an actual extension lead and laptop charger. If you don't need such a thing then there are neater options. It's good to have different options available.

  • What is the fire-starter rating for this charger? If it's 50% or less then I'll take my chances (I'm a half glass full kinda guy)

    • +1

Baseus is pretty reputable, there's probably a greater chance of fire from a $10 Arlec charger from Bunnings.

    • Heymix > baseus

Nobody seems to have issues with buying heymix chargers every time they get posted… so baseus have an effective 0 chance compared to them

Are we on the same OzBargain?

        • Forgot the /s

The sarcasm wasn’t very clear mb

  • There is also a 67W US or EU plug model that has two USB-C, one USB-A and a HDMI output at 4K30.

    • +1

I've always wanted to watch electricity on my TV

      • Its for being able to dock a device via hdmi.. basically a dock built into the charger

  • +1

    Code is expired BGad8563

  • The first one I had stopped working after a day (overheated?) and the replacement charger's first port doesn't work anymore either. I might just be unlucky with QC but still a bit bummed

    • Received mine the other day, noticed that one of the USB-A ports doesn't work. Now the second USB-A port intermittently stops working. Have raised a request with Banggood to replace. Have had to send video, photos and write up of the fault.

Saw good reviews online for 100w which according to the reviewer has additional circuitry and features over the 65W variant. May opt for that in future when cheaper.

  • Fire hazard?

    • +1

      Baseus is very reputable

  • +1

According to this guy, it's pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2OReKLE2aI

I use the 100W one daily to power my WFH laptop and other accessories.

  • I've been using the 100W for 6months now. So far so good. No issues.

  • +1

I have the 100w model. its warm to touch but not so bad.
Its much harder to find the 100w model anywhere. There are more places which sells the AU/CN plug 65w model.

  • Received a second unit from Banggood and this unit has the same fault as the 1st one Received from them looks like a faulty batch.
USB2 which is a Type A USB port doesnt charge. Anyone else who Received theirs have the same problem?
