Ring Doorbell 3 + Chime $149 Delivered @ Costco (Membership Required)

840

I found this amazing deal a few days ago and linked it in the Google nest bell .
But thought it deserves a post on its own
The Ring video Doorbell 3 RRP is $299, on sale at Amazon for $199. The ring chime RRP is $59. Combined RRP of $358. You get both of them for $149.
My order arrived yesterday and received both items.

Furthermore after registering the doorbell, ring also gave me a code for a free faceplate for the doorbell valued at $25. Total RRP will now be $383.
All of these include free delivery.

N.B. ring requires a subscription to keep your surveillance recording. https://ring.com/au/en/protect-plans

UPDATE: Please note you can use this device without a subscription. Please use the above link to see benefits of subscription.. things such as 180 day recording is what you would benefit with subscription.
Things such as Live alerts, 2 way voice over, Live view are all available without a subscription
Here is a comparison of no sub vs the two tiers of sub https://support.ring.com/hc/en-au/articles/360022109691-Ring…

Dont forget you need to pay subs fee

    • +1

Yeah I already have 4 spotlight cam so it's all good from my end. But good point I'll add that info. Note its optional not mandatory

    • +13

      The worst thing about Ring.

      • +2

yeah. it works if you have multiple products with them like maverickjohn.

I moved to Unifi doorbell from Ring Doorbell because I have the wifi and cameras setup already.

I prefer the local storage option for my cameras.

        • +2

Unifi is tempting because I have all their network gear, but it's all or nothing.
Personally I use Frigate + cheap IP cameras (on a blocked VLAN), then route into homekit as needed.

          • @[Deactivated]: time to get the Dream Machine Pro. ^_^

I bit the bullet and never looked back. :)

        • +1 for unifi protect. Their doorbell features need to be improved though, such as familiar face detection etc. Hopefully g4 pro doorbell brings this with an update or a newer version with POE allows.

          • @niknikniknik: The G4 Instant is a letdown to me.

Was going to upgrade my old G3 flex but I'm wondering how am I going to wire a usb-c to the camera I have no idea.

            • @Andreu: The instant is probably for use in a spot where a camera is nice to have and not a requirement. From my understanding it is wifi only and the USB C cable is just for power. For the important spots, the PoE (power + data) cameras are the ones to get.

        • Which unifi doorbell do you have/recommend?

          • @pranksta: G4 doorbell will do for most. Data over wifi and power via a wired AC doorbell power supply.

The G4 Pro doorbell offers POE (data + power) via a USB C adapter, which offers more robust connectivity than wifi only. It still works with AC doorbell power and wifi though. Also has an extra downwards facing camera for packages. It is double the price though. I have a unifi bullet covering the front of the house, so don't really need the doorbell to be a robust recording device. G4 doorbell standard works for me. If the doorbell is also your primary camera source then perhaps the G4 Pro doorbell is worth it.

      • No the worst thing about Ring is their motion sensors don't wake the camera up until a few seconds later.
If I run past a ring camera, it won't see me at all.

        • +3

          nods and writes this down

  • 👍

  • +2

Besides the shady way amazon let police into these, they are very solid pieces of hardware.

  • +2

Aren't these also like a big network security risk? I thought I had read somewhere that they can essentially create easy attack vectors into your home network.

    • +1

Not anymore, That was an issue with the first gen camera's. There has been no incidents to my knowledge since then.
But obviously you go into these ecosystems knowing that they are online based. The same goes for Arlo and Google nest services

  • +1

Good deal for Ring - it's cheaper than the basic Wired Ring doorbell and Chime package.

    • +2

IMHO no deal is a good deal for Ring given the forced sub fees. And I say that as a Ring owner

      • +3

You are forced with Google nest and Netgear Arlo as well, so its not unique to Ring. I'm not trying to promote ring over others, but its important to highlight the sub requirement exists in other ecosystems. Also you can use without subscription, it just means you wont get benefits such as 180 day recordings.

  • +7

A quick search on amazon, noticed ring chime is selling for $19, rrp$59. Pro is $49, rrp$89, if anyone interested.

  • OP, what do you mean you linked it in the Google nest bell?

  • +2

For the reason of not wanting to sub decided on eufy 2k doorbell, so far has been excellent and the app is really intuitive and obviously not having to subscribe is the big winner. If anyone was on the fence between the 2, I’ve also had a ring doorbell and so far the eufy is much better.

    • +4

Isn't eufy the company that allowed anyone to un-securely view anyone elses footage via their web portal?

      • Could be, I haven’t seen any info on that but will look it up

Looks to be that it was an oversight as 0.1% of people use the online portal. The app has always been end to end encryption and the online portal will also be end to end.

        Source https://www.zdnet.com/google-amp/article/anker-admits-eufy-c…

        • +1

I had a Eufy 2k doorbell which was stolen recently. Their support had no way to track or lock down the device. It can be taken and used on another home base.

          • @avmayne: LOL what? People steal these doorbells with camera in them??

Yeah you'd think the company would be able to blacklist the serial of any stolen devices, rendering them useless…

            • @idonotknowwhy: They are really easy to steal. takes 5 seconds to rip it off the mount like my thief did. The night vision camera also isn't good enough to show the thiefs face. I have a street light right outside but it was still too low quality for the police to use for facial recognition.

          • @avmayne: Surely they’d have the same conditions as Ring?

            From the ring website
“If your Ring Security Camera or Video Doorbell product is stolen at any time after your purchase, Ring will replace the stolen device at no charge to you.”

Unfortunately my eufy cameras weren’t stolen. They just stole the hub.

  • +1

So only worth if using as subscription service. Wouldn’t Imou be better for that? Also if someone is breaking into your property, they are probably not going to enter through the front door

    • +2

If you have Ring hardware in your house you are already paying a subscription.
You also can use this without subscription as an FYI
"Is a Ring Protect Plan required to use my Ring products?
No. Your Ring products provide their standard features (instant alerts, Live View, Two-Way Talk, and so on) without any subscription. Ring Protect Plans simply offer additional features for those who want them." from their ring protect site
Have a look at the link in the OP to see benefits of protect. Things like 180 day recording was the main perk i wanted. as i would like to retrospectively look at something if for example i am overseas for an extended period of time

I have amended OP once again to highlight that subscription is optional but to use the link to see the perks of subscription

  • Does this Ring need to be wired in or runs off a battery

    • +3

Runs off battery, You can also get a solar charger (Although they arent on sale now). The chime runs of mains

      • +1

thanks - just bought one for the in-laws place

      • +2

We have 3 wired and 3 on solar.
Used to only have batteries but the high use areas were lasting about 2 months and the other about 4 months.
Since we added solar they seem to stay at 98-100%. Had solar about 2 years now. Solar costs about the same as a spare battery but means you are not climbing up ladders regularly to change battery.

        • +1

Yeah i got solar panels for my 4 spotlight cam, best investment for them.
Waiting for a good price on the doorbell solar charger

        • Was there a performance difference running off mains vs battery?
Particularly with the 'boot up' time when motion activates the device?

          • +1

@idonotknowwhy: 3 cameras out the front( doorbell wired, spotlight wired and plain camera with solar) all seem to ping at the same time.
Interestingly, the ding noise hits Android devices at least 3 or seconds before Apple devices.
Doesn't seem to be any difference in performance between wired and battery/ solar.
Used many ring devices at 3 homes. The definition is so much better now than previously. The speakers even sound better too (can talk to pets when on holidays).

  • Thanks OP, bought one.

    Can it be installed DIY?

  • -2

Is this one of those things Caine used when fighting in John Wick 4?

  • Don’t hold your breath on the free faceplate offer, never received mine and a common complaint.

    • I just received the tracking order.

  • -2

People crap on EUFY for security but amazon is far worse, wouldnt touch their products.

  • Don't join the sidewalk!

    • +5

In Australia, it's called a footpath.

  • Does this store any video / motion stills at all? With Google Nest doorbell for example, they at least provide you with something like 4-6 hrs worth of previous recordings.

    • Google Nest doorbell only records the most recent 3 hours. That's sort of OK during the day, but useless overnight.

  • +1

    $139.98 @ Costco Ringwood VIC

  • so they will make back their margin by charging you a subscription for using this ?

    • I went subscription free with eufy. Biggest mistake. The thieves just took the hub that held the recordings.

  • I'm all in with Google Home.
But still think this is a good buy - so bought this for my doorbell. Hopefully will prove worthwhile.
Disappointed that I can't get the door bell to ring and also won't be able to see doorbell video on my Google home device.
    Anyone else in similar position?

  • Thanks OP

    Pulled the trigger

  • Thx grabbed one

  • Wonder if you can sign up for the subscription from Turkey or similar at a lower rate.

  • +1

I'm a postie.. these make playing ding dong dash much harder.
