what if the metal being drilled was also similarly sourced 🤪

    Reviews aren't great.

It's going to be a pretty badly made set, but, a lot of the worst ones are "I drilled through only a bit of metal and it's blunt", with no mention of using cutting fluid or going slow - so some of those would have also ruined a good set at 5x the price. If you're drilling PVC or a handful of ply projects or whatever I think they're probably going to do fine.

best not to cheap out on drill bits. eventually you will regret it

As a DIYer I learned not to purchase cheap drill bits. Ultimately they don't work and end up paying more when you buy from a different sources. If you wants a cheaper one, get from Bunnings. At least you have the options to swap or refund it.

  • I use a cheap set of these and dont have a problem, they are still sharp?? But I would also suggest buying a decent set if possible.

A good set is a little pricey :o

Yep! There are plenty of things like table and circy saw blades, angle grinder cut off discs, router bits etc where I think it's definitely worth buying the good stuff. That stuff will destroy your guts or nuts if it goes wrong and it's worth doing right.

With step drill bits I'm not sure there's really a great use case for buying a premium one at huge prices. There are going to be rings that wear out fast that you use a lot at the tip and they're basically impossible to sharpen on a grinder or stone. If you need to drill a lot of metal on a drill press you are better off buying a couple of good drill bit sizes you use a lot and can sharpen.

For going through light stuff like plastic, thin aluminium, ply, softwood, or used disposably on MDF I think these cheap ones do fine.

  • Isn't drilling sheet metal the main purpose of these step drills? Can't imagine they're very useful for anything else.
