Why Do You Shower in The Morning?

I've wondered for a while now, why do people shower in the morning as soon as they get up?

Personally I only shower at night. In the morning my routine is > relieve myself > wash my hands > wash my face > ready to face the day…Not only does it save time but it also saves our precious water, so a win win.

Maybe people sweat in their sleep or is it just a habit since childhood? Interested to know so I'll do a poll and add more if I missed something!

@RSmith: Aren't you doing exactly the same thing?

I think OP is saying the evening shower is essential (which it is) and the morning shower is unnecessary.

Why all the hate? And why are we arguing about this at all?

Is there a more toxic internet forum than Ozbargain?

              • @the wiz: Actually, no. I don't have any issues with people taking evening showers. Each to their own.

@RSmith: Anyone that says they don’t sweat at all during the day is lying to themselves. Most think it’s acceptable to shower at the end of the day and most clearly shower in the morning, which is not actually necessary but a habit.

Gym in the morning. The shower is a given after that. Otherwise, unless it's hot or im hungover, i don't feel the need.

  • +6

People who don't shower in the morning obviously don't have nasty degenerative sex with their partner during the week.

    • gettin' down and dirty between dirty sheets - ooh, nasty !

  • +1

I wake up and my body, face and hair are quite oily. It comes out while I sleep and is definitely when my body is in most need of a clean.

  • +2

Given the state of smell on peak hour trains in the mornings, i would say there are some who dont even shower daily if nlt weekly lol

    • some English used to say they bathe once a year - whether they need it or not …

  • +4

I’m going to shower 3 times a day now just to give you the shits.

  • +8

It’s simple, I shower in the morning cause I am not ignorant to the fact that everyone has different lifestyles, different bodies, different schedules and I don’t make obnoxious assumptions that the lifestyle I lead, the way my body is and the sechedule I sleep is the default “normal” or “right” way and should be the standard unless someone can make an argument that makes sense to me that I’m too pigheaded to see anyway.

Personally I’d rather enter the shit show that is this world feeling fresh and clean each day then worry about being slightly dirty in bed which I don’t. Now of course if I was a tradie or something who did physical demanding stuff during the day I’d likely shower in the evening too but seeing I have rather sedentary daily schedule at the moment so therefore don’t get that dirty and sleep naked I see no reason do anything but brush my teeth wash my face as part of my nightly skin care and medicine taking routine. When I do lead a more active lifestyle I tend to have quick showers after intense physical activity like working out, I don’t like sitting around in my own filth.

Any argument about saving water is ridiculous I shower quick and efficiently whenever I shower regardless of when I shower. If I use up slightly more water by showering an additional 5 minutes by having a second shower I’m still using less water a day then most assholes who wash their car super regularly or water their lawns they’re obsessed over or who take long ass showers or any the million things people do that already waste water which none of it matters anyway when compared to how much water our industries and the corporations are using and wasting making anything we do as individual to conserve water (profanity) moot. Just in the same vein as recycling.

Finally Do you not (profanity) in bed? Cuddle? Otherwise get somewhat sweaty in bed especially during summer? Do you never fart in bed? Cause if not you Do any of those things and you’ve already negated this whole “clean” bed thing you’ve been so adamant about in your comments.

    • +1

Finally Do you not (profanity) in bed?

OP must try real hard to do it slowly to avoid sweating.

      • Slowly but surely 👌🏽

        • Your toes must be permanently curled! haha

  • What if there was an abundant supply of water? Surely there's no problem with two showers a day if this were the case?

    And what's wrong with desal?

  • +1

Shower both day and night and in between if I've done no. 2

After me and the misses do the deeds all night, nice shower in the morning is always great.

  • +2

Night and morning. I shower after exercising.

  • +1

Because, that's when my neighbours aren't home

  • -3

I shower when I can, or have a bath when I can't and really need to have washed. I can only do it at night as it takes a lot for me to do it and I have to work up to it.

I can usually manage 3 per week now and will make sure it hasn't been more than a couple of days when I'm in the office. I have friends who don't hesitate to tell me if I smell and it definitely takes more than a couple of days before I smell, everyone's different though and people live in different environments. I do freshen areas that tend to get smellier faster. I always shower before being intimate with my boyfriend, but we don't really see each other that often. It also tends to be when I'm not working so I have a bit more capacity for other things.

Sometimes you just need to do what you can to get by.

    • I can only do it at night as it takes a lot for me to do it and I have to work up to it.

We are talking about showers here, arent we?

      • Yes, I nearly didn't share as I know the OzB community hate on people with disabilities, but I thought I'd put it out there anyway.

        • +2

I've been here for a while, but I can't say that I can recall a time the OzB community has hated on someone with disabilities.

People here say all sorts of things to shit-stir in general, so if it's not clear that there's a particular reason (such as a disability) for something, the shit-stirring will just get piled-on as per usual. It's not "targetting" a particular thing.

          • @bobbified: Yeah, sorry, might have been a bit strong. I think it's more ableist than hating on people most of the time. Also a lack of awareness probably. Just an attitude of.. If I can do it everyone else can do it too and if they don't it's because they don't want to.

  • can afford a shower in the morning….too chill in VIC…

  • What happened to pre/post sex showers? What are we a bunch of dirty rats?

Wake up shower is the way to go. It's nice if you have a dump to feel fresh for the day, it's also a pleasant way to start the morning regardless. Water literally falls from the sky or is pumped from the ground, and we return all that we use, to the ground. It's not too precious.

    • -2

Maybe 30 years ago it wasn’t precious, but it is now hence why we need desalinisation plants which costs us money.

      • +2

True, but the price of water will then reflect this and people will use it as they can afford it, it should scale with price. I should clarify that I am 100% on rain water that has to be used and conserved depending on the season. I have to buy water @ $250 for 15,000 litres by truck. Still can have two showers a day, with a family of 5 just fine.

      • +1

So what if desalination costs money? It's a solution to a problem - I'm happy to pay for that.

  • Would you have a shower in the morning if you had a nocturnal emission mess?

  • it depends on the type of work you do for me. I used to shower after work shift when I had a physically intensive employment.

  • +4

Well, I shit in the morning and wiping my arse with a dry piece of paper doesn't feel that clean so I shower afterwards and clean it nicely.

    • 3 daily S’s
      shit shave shower

  • +1

I hate morning showers because they somehow give me a headache. Maybe the shock from the change in temperature, going from dry to wet, and just the sudden change in environment and getting yanked from a comfy bed to a wet box adds to it. Where possible I'll avoid showering early morning! Showers make me feel more relaxed than alert anyway (even in the mornings they make me want to snuggle back into bed) so night time works best for me. And yes, I'm definitely more dirty after 16hrs of commute, work, exercise, cooking, chores etc than 8hrs of sleeping and not moving, so night showers make the most sense to me.

  • Have been a 2 shower a day person for most of my adult life.

Plus the shower before bed is a better chance of a blumkin

    • Acoording to Urban Dictionary:

The term "Blumkin" is when a man is sitting on the toilet taking a shit. And has his woman come in and give him head during the act of shitting.

"Bitch get your ass in here and give me a blumkin!"

The 4th question should have been do you pee in the shower?

    • +1

The 5th: Are you stomping it down?

  • +3

If you are so concerned about water, run the shower for 2min to get the full warming/awakening effect, turn off the shower, soap up and wash, then turn the shower on again to rinse. You then reduce the amount of time spent running the shower and you save water. I had to do that in a share house that had 6ppl. We all did it cos it was the only way that everyone had enough hot water.

  • each year when I visit the spa it can a bit random whether it's morning or evening.

  • +1

I shower in both the morning and night 99% of the time (unless I fall asleep on the couch) and sometimes, depending on the days activity, I'll have a quick 2 minute shower in the evening just to freshen up. I despise the feeling of being "sticky" and find a shower to be the only thing to stop that.

Yes comfort comes at a cost when it comes to paying the bill but I'm happy to shell out a few extra dollars per month if it means not having to feel uncomfortable for hours at a time.

These threads always remind me why so many people stink out in public.

News flash people - you can't smell your own stink, but everyone else can.

    • That's once a week shower kind of people. Or van life creeps

    • That's a lack of deodorant far more than a lack of a morning shower.

  • I have a fairly quick shower in the night and a good shower and wash my hair in the morning. Always had the morning shower. Night added in the last 15 years or so.

  • +2

I shower twice a day (morning and evening).

  • Depends on place and occasion and not as a habbit if there is no need

  • quickest way to drink water on the morning

    • That's got to be one of the quickest ways to get sick (and piss out of your a$$) in a third world country! 😁

  • I shower at least twice per day. Why? Because I’m not a grub.

  • You need another option, "I don't", unless you honestly believe you're the only person who doesn't shower in the morning.

  • +1

My hair cannot be tamed without a shower. I will look like a cockatoo after a nights sleep.

  • +1

Showers both wake me up and relax me. I look at it like some people have coffees for similar reasons. So I often have one in the morning and at night if I've been doing manual work and I'm sweaty.

I'm very conservative with my power, gas and water usage with everything else. Showers though are the one thing I'm a little selfish with.

  • +1

You know you can shower twice a day if you want?

    • +1

Yes, but OP wants everyone to please, think of the water restrictions in WA even if you don't live there.

Also, don't shower in the morning because he thinks it's weird and has also posted about it previously in 2021 so it's obviously quite a bugbear of his.

      • -4

Gosh you went back 2 years, good on you. It doesn’t matter where you live everyone should be thinking about the resources they are using.

        • This account doesn't post that much so only had to go as far back as a page down. Multiple posts querying showering in the morning tho

  • Why do you relieve yourself in the morning? Why not at night?

  • +1

Poll should also have had "both morning and night"

  • I showered in the morning for the first part of my life, until I learned the East Asian way.

Now I shower in the evening, and the idea of getting into bed dirty just feels disgusting and nasty.

Showering at night and getting into cleaner sheets just feels right now.

What wakes me up in the morning is a splash of cold water on my face, and my first coffee.

  • As some comments have mentioned above, hair gets really messy throughout the night and it's hard to get it back in shape/ tamed in the morning without washing head with ample water. Gel or any other type of stuff just won't do the trick. This is another reason for morning showers for many.

  • OP, how long do you shower for and do you use a water saving shower head? I feel like that’s far more relevant than whether someone showers once or twice. My father in law showers once per day, but he wastes a crapload of water since he takes 30 mins to shower.

I sweat in my sleep no matter what season it is and my hair goes all crazy during sleep, so I need that morning shower. I like feeling clean when I go to bed too. I shower for 5 minutes.

  • +2

so you go to the toilet and dont wash your ass and go to work with a dirty ass?

No wonder people stink here so much.
    Shower morning and night
Everyone sweats at night time, even if you dont think you do

Ive worked with people who said they dont shower in the morning and they have the worst B.O in the world
Its a good thing I am now self employed, dont have to put up with dirty people.

    Please shower in the morning

    • +1

Also definitely this, this is extremely important to me and I can't believe I forgot it, 100%. I schedule that task, immediately before the shower task, for exactly this reason.

    • +1

I did just post that I'm an evening shower person, the exception being if I have to take a dump.. I would absolutely shower in this case as well. To be honest though I have trained myself to dump mid morning.. you know, whilst at work and I know how to wipe properly. I also have no BO, i can't stand that smell either, it makes me gag and when i was running I would shower 2-3 times a day. Some of us care.

  • "but it also saves our precious water" this makes sense if, you're running on water tanks and are delaying when you're using water, to save up more? Otherwise it doesn't to me.

I don't think it makes sense to not shower before spending an entire day, I'd rather start cleaner, end dirtier, then when I start again, immediately be clean.

I have more issue with the 'maximum amount of uncleanliness' being near the end of the day when I'm around people, versus the start of the day, when I'm not. Yeah?

  • +1

Personally i can't go to bed without having a shower or a nice long soak in the bath i just feel dirty if i don't.

Also that way the bed sheets i only have to change every couple of days.

  • i hate showers in the morning but my son has to have a shower as soon as he wakes up even if he ain’t going anywhere.and he has another shower in the afternoon

  • Seems to me that OP wants people to shower less often because there are water restrictions where he lives.

Easily fixed. Build as many dams as are required and if that's not possible invest in desal.

  • +1

This post confuses me so much. I cannot for the life of me understand people that don't shower in the morning (other than school kids)

  • Apparently showering at night saves more water than showering in the morning?

  • you must shower before sleeping. that is just absolutely disgusting. you have been sweating all day long and are dirty, then you take that into your clean bed? that bed is going to be absolutely disgusting. Depending if i feel gross in the summer mornings, then i would maybe shower in the morning. but i will always shower at night anytime between getting home from work and going to bed. i am also not a tradie, and have an office job with air conditioning.

  • I guess if you shower and swap the sheets every time after adult things, or are inactive in those ways then there is no reason to consider showers.
If you do engage in bed activity and don't shower in the morning then everyone knows you smell like balls but won't mention it.

  • +1

I live in FNQ…I shower every evening and I go to the gym at 4am, so I shower every morning too.

  • It feels gross to go to bed without showering especially when I wear shorts almost year round and tshirt for about 3/4 of the year.

In the morning, a cold shower completely wakes me up. I no longer drink coffee regularly after a lifetime of heavy coffee consumption. I feel better this way.

  • Because I am not a f!@#$ caveman or pre-industrial civilisation serf.

    • You speak like a caveman 😂

  • Bed hair

  • You do realise you sweat a fair amount at night as well?

  • +1

What I want to know is does anyone who shower in morn NOT shower at night?

Fwiw Brits don't like washing much at all
    https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/nov/27/one-in-…
    https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families…

I knew a guy who showered once a term in HS (a Brit). He didn't do sports, added layers of deodorant and other sprays, and funnily was a bit of a narcissist.

    • In many old parts of the world, historically speaking taking a bath wasn't a common thing.

      • I wonder how that works? Brits, parents teach their kids to shower twice a week say.
Oz, brits came here 200y ago, parents teach their kids to shower twice a week.
How did Oz become shower/daily but brits stay the same?

        • Most were never British.
But the climate is obviously very different, sweat is a bigger issue day and night. Thin clothing lets body smells waft out.
Water not uncomfortably cold, even if it is cold then there was never a shortage of firewood for free/cheap heating in Aus and the original city's exist where they do since they have ample water supply.

  • Depends on how much you sweat… during day or at night..

  • Could be a lot of sweat and other fluids when you're not actually sleeping.

  • After years of being morning shower person I switched to only showering of an evening before going to bed (or after I get back from work depending on how dirty i feel). Keeps me fresh for bed and any potential cuddle time but better still in the morning I use a hot face washer to give my face/head a good freshen up with hot water (feels like getting out of a shower) and I'm ready and off to work so very quickly, I love it. If we decide to have special mummy and daddy cuddles, yep I shower again and get a good nights sleep.

  • +1

quick pee and a quick pull, a shower is required to wash it all down

  • I sweat a lot, so morning and night or I feel (and probably smell) gross.

Hell I put deodorant on before I go to bed lol

  • I respect my co-workers

  • It depends. Some days if it's not too hot I can skip the morning shower but it requires me to use the AC all day otherwise I will feel gross by the afternoon.

  • +1

Shower at night because then you sleep feeling nice and fresh, wake up the same and ready to go.

    • I never wake up feeling fresh.

  • I really hope no matter what your shower habits are, that you all are at least showering before sex, for your partners sake.
