Why Do You Shower in The Morning?

I've wondered for a while now, why do people shower in the morning as soon as they get up?

Personally I only shower at night. In the morning my routine is > relieve myself > wash my hands > wash my face > ready to face the day…Not only does it save time but it also saves our precious water, so a win win.

Maybe people sweat in their sleep or is it just a habit since childhood? Interested to know so I'll do a poll and add more if I missed something!

It depends on what part of world you are from. In some countries, morning shower is the norm. I grew up in one such country, so yes I shower in the morning.

    • +1

Oh no way, I didn’t know that. Yep I need to travel more. So you don’t shower at night?

      • +28

I would seriously hope they shower nights too. Disgusting going to bed with the days dirt, dead skin etc on you.

        • +8

This is why you wear a raincoat before going dexter on someone.

        • +1

Sometimes I don't shower at night.

        • Depends what you do during the day, but typically during summer this results bathing twice a day.

        • +3

I completely agree with you. i am not a tradie, and i work in an air-conditioned office, and i always shower at night. sometimes i will shower in the summer mornings if i get sweaty or just feel gross and need to be refreshed. but 100% night time showers, and sometimes mornings for me.

          • +1

@Hugh G Rection: I come from a farming background so shower at end of day was an essential (been in IT since the 90's though). Back in the 90's my then girlfriend is what really drove the message home for me, she used to constantly get skin problems, spots etc and she showered in mornings, I convinced her to try showering at night for a week and maybe it was just coincidence but her skin issues all cleared up and never came back (at least for the couple years I was with her). The body is constantly shedding dead skin, sweat and oil and that is without the daily dirt and grime from your environment, can't imagine taking that all to bed with me.

I think that could be considered fairly closed minded, you should probably be aware that multiple countries would consider wiping with paper disgusting or not washing feet when entering a home disgusting or eating pigs disgusting. In some countries blowing your nose in public is considered super gross for example.

To top it all off there is evidence people who over-clean themselves and their homes are shown to develop over active immune disorders so I wouldn't be so deadset in the mindset that we should all be clean at all times.

I think people should just do what works for them, if you're happy showering frequently or even just before bed, that's cool. If someone else just wants to shower in the morning, that's cool too. As long as they aren't impacting on you, i.e. smelling really bad and working alongside you, don't worry about it. I've noticed some people will reuse their towels like 3-5 times before changing them and I've always found that gross but I haven't needed to tell anyone it's disgusting because it works for them and they don't smell.

        some people have sex

          Sounds expensive. Not on Ozbargain.

Don't know why you would get negged, 100% the reason to shower in the morning

          • -1

@Jackson: I didn’t neg but I shower right before bed so if I did get lucky it is always before that. Unless you’re getting woken up during sleep for sex of course and no male would say no to that.

            • @bobwokeup: If I get lucky I am sleeping after that, the best sleep I ever get. No way I am ruining that with a shower

          • +1

@Jackson: Yeah, the downvotes are weird…

    • -4

Exactly, many Asian countries have people who don't have much hair, they tend to stay clean and smelling nice for longer and don't need to shower in the morning. However, many western countries have very hairy people and it's extremely difficult to stay clean and smelling nice if you do any kind of exercise so it's essential to shower in the morning before meeting people. The deciding factor here is hair, not race before people arc up and go nuts about racism. Yes, there are hairy people in every country, some countries just have far more/less than others (by a factor of hundreds of millions).

When you have to get up at 4am to go to work, a splash of cold water doesn't cut it.

    • -3

Yeah damn that’s early. Still though even a shower wouldn’t wake you up that much more? A coffee definitely would, after drinking a litre of water a coffee wakes me up.

    • +13

Sounds like you're wasting time showering when you could be sleeping a few extra minutes.

I've had no issues waking up at 4am, showering after work thus keeping my bed clean and not wasting water by showering only 1x/day.

      • What? I do shower once a day and after work (ie before bed time).

        • +11

That may be true, but it appears you don't understand how replies work

          • +15

@TEER3X: What? I do understand how replies work!

          • @TEER3X: You are correct, sorry about that. I don’t understand why all replies don’t tag the person so I mistakenly thought you were replying to me haha

    • +1

This doesn't make any sense, when I get ready for work at 4am, my alarm is set to the absolute latest time possible so that I get up and go. I don't have time for a tea party and a shower before I start work lol…

    Relieve myself

Interesting to create a thread on showering to humble brag that you are able to have a (mod: edited) every morning ;-)

    • +9

Oh my god that is hilarious and obviously not what I meant. Maybe when I was a teenager haha

      • +8

Hence 'it's a habit since childhood' is an option in the poll?

        • +6

True but not the habit I was referring too 😁

          • +23

@bobwokeup: I mean it puts great context to this and just how awesome your morning is that you need to wash your face aftwewards!

relieve myself > wash my hands > wash my face > ready to face the day

            • -1

@Gunnar: Haha yeah I should have said go to the toilet to make it super clear.

              • +4

@bobwokeup: I, too, thought that's what you meant. I was thinking: I appreciate the honesty, but why are you telling us this?

                • +3

@Some Human: They do say honestly is the best policy. Was thinking I should edit it but the replies to that was too funny, so I’ll leave it.

              • +2

                @bobwokeup:

Haha yeah I should have said go to the toilet to make it super clear.

When I go to the toilet it’s usually to make the toilet super murky. I don’t think you’re doing it properly

            • +2

@Gunnar: That made me, genuinely, LOL.

    • +9

That makes no sense. I’ve got an office job. You would naturally be more “dirty” during the day.

    • +32

you get into your bed after a whole day of working, sitting on public transport and sweating? No thank you.

        • +1

Not that I like the cold but really want to visit one day. That aside you might not feel it but your body would naturally sweat during the day.

Especially if you aim to get the recommended 10k steps a day. I aim to do it but just miss out a couple of times a week.

          • +1

            @bobwokeup:

That aside you might not feel it but your body would naturally sweat during the day.

So is equally true for night too. Hair and skin secretion continues to occur at night too.

        • +5

Just because you don’t notice yourself sweating, doesn’t mean you’re not actually sweating, or accumulating filth. People who don’t shower at night are feral.

    • Is this why tradies tend to stink? I had a handyman that the realestate would send me that smelled like he worked on a farm.

      • It can be lots of reasons. But part of it is because they almost work alone, often in open-air environment.
Often a rubbish diet, smokers, drinkers.

Somewhat stereotype, all types work in construction

    • im in an air conditioned office, and i still 100% of the time take night showers. you are still gross with the outdoor elements, office space, people, commuting, etc… still need to shower at night whether you are a tradie or not.

  • Reminds me of this video https://youtu.be/7tbM8S1riN4

  • +25

I shower in the morning, wakes me up, fixes bed hair, fresh and ready.
If I am dirty and sweaty I will have a shower in the evening too but I don't like going to bed with damp hair.
If I am involved in bedroom Olympics at night, a shower in the morning is essential.

    • +1

So how does washing your face and fixing hair at the same time not work?

Do you wash your hair every shower? I used to wash my hair once a week as a teenager but now I do it 2-3 times a week or after working out which is 2-3 times anyway. Anyway if you do hair that often just shower a few hours before bed?

      • If I wanted to shower at night, it probably would be fine to wash my face, wet my hair in the morning.
But I don't particularly want to, and showering hours before bed isn't practical if I have things on in the evening.

So I usually don't, and just wash in the morning.

        • Fair enough, everyone’s different I just don’t understand why people wouldn’t want to wash sweat off from the day. If you’re that worried about damp hair use a hair dryer?

          • +2

@bobwokeup: The current temp here is 14 degrees. I’m not greatly worried about sweating.
I guess to answer your question, don’t you feel gross going to work without a shower if you have had sex the previous night?

            • @mskeggs: Your body still sweats when it’s cold.

              You answered a question with a question…

            • +6

@mskeggs: "if you have had sex the previous night?"

I can't help but feel this is a trap question for the rest of the ozbargain guys out there who are already struggling to get through the 10 pack condom deals in their lifetime through non-balloon use purposes

        • +5

Definitely not, it’s not good for your hair to wash it that often. I only wash my hair after I’ve been working out which is 2-3 times a week. You would be in the minority of people that wash their hair everyday.

          • -5

@bobwokeup: So you take shower everyday because you sweat during the day but you dont think that applies to your scalp? I would be shocked if washing hair everyday is not the norm. No wonder there are so many stinky people out in the public.

            • +2

@keejoonc: Again it’s not healthy for your hair to be washed that often. Yes the scalp would sweat/get oily but not as much as the body. Even washing the body with soap is not great for the body so another reason to not shower twice a day. I guarantee most don’t wash their hair everyday. The results on here wouldn’t tell you but a wider survey would confirm it.

Washing your hair daily is not what most people do

        • +2

Why on earth would you fully wash your hair every day?

I swear reading these comments just confuses me. Why do you people think you accumulate that much dirt throughout the day? Unless you're working on an oil rig or something? Most of you are office workers who barely get any exercise in to begin with. What leads you on to thinking that you need to chemically destroy your scalp EVERY DAY?

          • @FallaM: Why wouldn't you? Do you wash your hair with acid? My scalp is perfectly fine after washing it everday for severald decades.
Eveyeone I know wash their hair everyday as well. Do you put any product on your hair? Dont tell me people still dont wash their hair after putting product on their hair as well. The thought of going to bed with unwashed haif when I've been in public area including public transport is so gross.

I typically shower twice a day.

In the morning after breakfast and in the evening before bed.

    • -5

Yeah why though that’s what I don’t understand?

      • +3

It's good to go to bed fresh - better chances with the missus if I smell nice. Spend a lot of time outside during the day so it's nice to wash off sunscreen, mozzie repellent and sweat.

In the morning because it's nice to freshen up after a session with the missus sleep and get the day started. Probably out of habit. I have short showers and use tank water. I have a buzz cut so don't have hair to wash. HTH.

        • Haha I miss the morning sessions, I’ve been married too long 🤣 Yeah thought it must have been a habit as I stopped as soon as I moved out of my parents house. I too have a quick shower so it wouldn’t waste much water in the morning but females do shower for longer. My wife doesn’t shower in the morning, thankfully.

        • @Muzeeb
          Similar.

In the morning because i need to freshen up (I hate camping due to lack of shower). If I've slept for longer than a few hours I have a shower.

I have short showers and use tank water. I have a buzz cut but still feels yuck if don't at least rinse and scratch it

Low activity day can go to bed without shower but with near daily fitness activities or yard work I invariably have a full 6-7 minute shower at night and then a 3-4 minute shampoo only in the morning, using it on head, pits and bits
          .

      • +9

Why do you need to understand… accept people are different… and have preference

So with all your comments so far… feels like you believe you are and those who are like you are more superior…

          • +6

@bobwokeup: Why would you need a good reason.

Why do people need to justify to you why they morning shower.

How does showering in the morning waste more water???

              • +9

                @bobwokeup:

If people are showering in the morning they must be showering at night,

Thats a bit presumptous of you…

Again… dont measure other peoples lives against yours, what you do is not a reflection of everyone else.

                • -5

@Archi: I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t sweat even a little bit during the day. Like I said in another comment, unless you’re in bed all day.

                  • +1

@bobwokeup: Im sure you get lots of people to agree with you.

                    • -8

@Archi: Yep because I call things how they are, I don’t beat around the bush.

                      • +4

@bobwokeup: Your first mistake with this thread was assuming everyone showers at night and those that shower in the morning must be having two showers a day. Even though a lot of comments have said this is not the case you still don't seem to understand that.

I have one shower a day and it's in the morning. The only time I also shower at night is on the weekend when I have been working in the garden or doing renovations. I also shower in the evening at the gym after a workout.

                  • @bobwokeup: Do you think you don't sweat or shred dead skin at night? Because I have news for you.

You know many people wear pajamas to bed right?

I prefer to shower in the morning, my bed doesn't stink. Never changing your bedding, now that's a bit grotty (I assume you never do, since you shower at night and think that makes you immune to general hygiene whiles asleep).

          • +1

@bobwokeup: A cold shower can get the body systems going, biologically- cold triggers circulatory system to get going, or warm in the winter helps. It’d be great to jump in the ocean or a lake first thing too, but most people don’t have access to that.

Some hairstyles can’t be untangled/ done without being wet thoroughly first. Takes longer and is more awkward to wet hair under the sink than in a shower.

Lastly, showers are the best. They feel great. Why not start the day feeling great?

    • +2

I typically shower twice a day.

In the morning after breakfast and in the evening before bed.

Belatedly, and after prompt: That makes scents. Cheers.

  • +5

How do you save water versus someone who only showers in the mornings?

    • -7

Very good point, sorry I was referring to people who shower in the morning as well as at night. Admittedly I was wrong as I assumed everyone would shower at night as your body would naturally sweat a little bit during the day, no matter what you do (unless you stay in bed all day 😂)

      • +3

Why do you shower every day? You clearly believe we should be saving water. Every second day would do that more effectively and be better for your skin.

        Are you a stinky bastard?

        • I’m open to it but I like to aim for 10k steps a day and I walk quick, so I sweat and workout minimum 2-3 times a week.

Nope no one’s told me I smell and family/friends would, as they should 👍🏽

I relieve myself many times throughout the night.

Get onto Duodart and drink a sleep tea before going to bed. Now one nightly pitstop is all that is required!

      • +3

I absolutely hate when you are nice and snuggled and the urge to pee occurs. You choose between holding it in and staying in bed or relieving yourself and ruining your sleep cycle.

        • +1

I usually wake up once and I'm so sick of it. Sometimes I think I often think I should keep a bed pan next to my bed!

          • +1

@bobbified: Same here. I now ignore that feeling and make it to the morning. I also stopped drinking liquids a few hours before bed and that helped too.

            • @bobwokeup: I often try not to drink too much at night as well, but sometimes, can't help it.

It's really annoying for me because it's usually around 5am that i wake up and need to go. Normally I'd wake up at 7am, so the last two hours of my sleep is just me rolling around. Can't really do much else haha
