Why Do You Shower in The Morning?

I've wondered for a while now, why do people shower in the morning as soon as they get up?

Personally I only shower at night. In the morning my routine is > relieve myself > wash my hands > wash my face > ready to face the day…Not only does it save time but it also saves our precious water, so a win win.

Maybe people sweat in their sleep or is it just a habit since childhood? Interested to know so I'll do a poll and add more if I missed something!

It wakes me up (washing my face doesn't do it)

        • SAME! Name checks out

    • Consider having a sleep test done. Needing to pee can be a sign that you arnt getting deep sleep. I use a CPAP device which helps me sleep deeply and I dont get up during the night. If I dont use it I am up 2-3 times to urinate as I am only sleeping very lightly. Might be worth investigating especially if you have other factors like snoring etc.

      • Or big prostate.

  • +8

Twice a day cos Iā€™m not a grot. Also brush teeth twice.

    • -1

Haha how is not showering after sleep being a grot? What you during the night is your business but most donā€™t get dirty. Brushing your teeth twice a day (minimum) is a given and not what this post is about.

      • +2

        …but most donā€™t get dirty.

I don't know about that dude…. how do you do the dirty and not get dirty? haha

        • Haha as in from sleeping.

      • +2

what are you talking about, have a look at yourself in the mirror when you wake up, then take a shower and look at yourself, you will look about 500% more presentable, you can tell if someone hasn't had a shower in the morning just by looking at them, if you want to shower at night time that is great and recommended, but not showering in the morning especially if you're going to go out in the world is disgusting, i don't think you realise how gross you get by sleeping, your face all crusty, sleep in your eyes, bed hair, your cheek being up against a pillow for 8+ hours, i think maybe you should force yourself to have a shower every morning for 1 week, once you get a taste of it, it is pretty hard to turn back

        • -2

Maybe youā€™re disgusting but I donā€™t get sweaty during sleep so why would I? I still wash my face, fix up my hair, deodorant and after shave.

          • +2

@bobwokeup: if you are going to all that effort, just shower, try it, you wont look back

    • nah, 100% night shower is more then enough. maybe an extra morning shower during the summer mornings. i eat 3 times a day, i brush my teeth 3 times a day. i have my own bathroom in my office so i brush my teeth after lunch. even if i didn't have my own bathroom, i would still brush my teeth. my parents spent a lot on my teeth (braces), so i learned to take care of them and keep them straight and pearly white.

      • Having my own bathroom in my office is a life goal of mine!

Elon musk do showers in the morning thus I stated doing the same.

    • +3

If Elon stood in front of a train, would you?

      • +2

It's a power shower, great for body and mind, not suicidal.

      • -1

One can only hope the former would do that

      • -1

Never mind Elon. If Hon Dutton would stood in front of one I would ask him to hold my beer!

  • +11

I have tried both, and preferred showering in the morning:

    • Night showers typically lead to inconsistent shower times: If I night shower, I find that I get sweaty / smelly by late afternoon, and if I'm going out I need to shower before going out. Then do I shower again before bed? And then what about the next day, it will have been +24hrs by the time I get to shower before bed.

    • Morning shower is more consistent, straight out of bed into shower.

    • With a morning shower there's less of the 'pyjamas' mode on weekends in the mornings. Once I'm showered I'm in my day clothes and energised for the day etc.
    • For me, morning shower keeps me fresh through the whole day so I don't feel sweaty by bed time, but other people might be sweatier than me.
  • +1

The only time I tend to shower in the morning is if I didn't shower the night before (for whatever reason).

It's nice to shower in the morning but I'd choose showering at night any day of the week. IMO it's wasteful to shower twice a day, and it means you have to wash twice as many pairs of underwear which then requires using more detergent and water.

    • -4

I couldnā€™t agree more. Thatā€™s exactly how I see things too. It blows my mind that people are so selfish and donā€™t even think about the wasted water, especially when we have water restrictions. In Perth 50% of our drinking water comes from desalination but most wouldnā€™t even know that or seem to care.

      • +2

        It blows my mind

I'm at the point where this kind of thing no longer surprises me.

        • -1

True it doesnā€™t surprise me but unless weā€™re forced to change people wonā€™t. I still hold onto the hope that the majority will change their ways.

      • Do you think that showers make up a significant portion of total fresh water usage in Western Australia, after considering industrial and agricultural water usage?

      • I live in Perth and shower twice a day. I couldn't care less about how much water is used. Water is basically free anyway and it's not like I spend 20 minutes standing under the shower. Evening showers are usually longer where I scrub, wash my hair, rub one out and wind down. Morning showers are usually quite brief, enough for a quick once over and wake me up.

        • -1

This is exactly why we have water restrictions and it cost taxpayers money to build and maintain desalinisation plants which accounts for 50% of Perths water.

          • @bobwokeup: We have water restrictions so people don't waste water on their gardens, not because people are showering more than once a day. Why don't you blame the selfish people who own swimming pools (most of Perth is right near the ocean and most councils have public pools).

            • -1

@iguana: Itā€™s all related. If people were more careful with their water use, we wouldnā€™t have any restrictions at all.

      • So you have installed a rain water tank in your house?

    • +1

I have no idea what this means. Why would a morning shower double your underwear? Shower at night -> straight into sleepwear. Take off sleepwear in morning to shower or to get dressed if not showering. Are you wearing underwear to bed or something?

      • +1

Are you wearing underwear to bed or something?

Yep, thatā€™s why Iā€™d have to wash two pairs of underwear after each shower.

        • +2

2 pairs after each shower? how are you generating two pairs for each shower?

          • @lunchbox99: I mean one pair after each shower, two a day.

            • @Ghost47: So if you're not showing in the morning currently, does that mean you wear underwear all night then all day until your evening shower?

              • -1

@lunchbox99: Do you live in Queensland? If you do, it would make sense why this is weird to you. Not everyone lives in a gross and humid climate where you need to shower more than once a day to feel clean.

                • @Ghost47: Iā€™m not talking about shower frequency. Iā€™m talking about it being gross that youā€™re wearing underwear to bed then continuing to wear it all day. Like 24hrs in a pair of underwear. Gross

  • +2

I shower in the morning because it helps me wake up and feel fresh in the morning for work. My face is usually puffy when I first wake up and the shower helps me look normal again!

    • If you're sweaty/dirty from the previous day, would you still wait till morning to have a shower or would you take two (one before you sleep, one when you wake up)?

      • +2

If I'm dirty and sweaty when I get home from work, like if it's been a hot day or something, I'd have a shower almost straightaway. Sweat actually makes my skin itchy and uncomfortable so if I can help it, I'll keep as cool as I can. (And then I'll still shower again in the morning).

    • -2

A shower for your face when you can do that in the bathroom sink? No wonder we have water restrictions.

      • +4

Well, if you really want to know the detailsā€¦

I wake up naked, take a dump, wipe my ass, step into the shower, brush my teeth, wash my everything including my dangly bits and then put on my work clothes. Then I do my hair too.

I donā€™t suppose youā€™ll suggest i practice some creative acrobatic moves to get my arse crack and dangly bits in the bathroom sink.

When was the last time we had water restrictions?

        • -3

The fact you donā€™t know weā€™ve got water restrictions tells me you know nothing about what is happening around you. Theyā€™ve been in place for years.

          • +4

            @bobwokeup:

Theyā€™ve been in place for years.

Where? According to Melbourne Water, the last restrictions ceased in 2012!

Edit: You live in the desert and wonder why you have water restrictions! Perhaps you should move to a more civilised part of the country!

            • @bobbified: Youā€™ve got ā€œPermanent water-saving rulesā€ so you shouldnā€™t just use as much water as you want.

              • +2

                @bobwokeup:

                ā€œPermanent water-saving rulesā€

If your topic was to do with watering down hard surfaces, then yes. But I don't see anything about 'showers' in those rules.

  • +3

There is no water wasted here, I'm using it for showering whenever I want.

    • -2

That is the definition of wasting water and being selfish.

      • +3

I don't live somewhere with water restrictions. Therefore your accusations mean nothing.

        • -3

Youā€™re in the minority. We wouldnā€™t need desalination plants if water was abundant.

          • +1

@bobwokeup: I see you're from 'Perf'. Maybe move out of the desert if you want more water.

        • +1

If you waste water you increase the probability that you will live with water restrictions no matter where you live.

Having lived through severe water restrictions I don't waste water. But I don't feel guilty about using what I need to feel comfortable either.

No need to brag about wasting water. You might want that water back one day.

          • -1

@the wiz: I never said I wasted water. Just that I shower when I want or deem it's necessary. Not when some idiot on the internet tells me when it's appropriate.

  • +1

As I surf most mornings i just rinse off at the beach shower, at home maybe 3 times a week. We have a magnesium pool too, obviously if I do something sweaty like the lawns/gardening I do.

  • Tell me you brush your teethā€¦

  • People need to worry more about the chemicals and crap they put in and on their bodies.

    • +1

Pretty sure there's dust and bird shit in my tank water. No side effects are obvious yet.

      • -4

Thatā€™s alla natural not chemicals lol

        • +1

Water is a chemical and can be deadly.

        • +3

          and crap

Bird shit meets this definition in my books

        • +2

Many of the deadliest chemicals are all natural. Natural or synthetically made is irrelevant and chemicals can be either

  • +2

I shower twice a day morning and night even if the temp is 6 deg. Most times just once a day, but never let a day pass without showering.
Just feels right for me, I guess it's a personal habit.

  • +2

Daily morning shower is a must for me. If I haven't had a shower, that day is like wasted for me.
Most of the days I will take quick shower in the evening as well. But now, as working from Home, taking shower only if I went to gym or long walk.

I got this habit from childhood. Not this but a few other bad habits that I cant shake off.
    1) Washing hair every day
    2) If my hair grows above my 'preferred limit', I have a very uneasy feeling.
    3) Cutting finger nail - Even if it grows slightly, I feel very uneasy with it.

Probably these are psychological things. At least that is what my wife says.

    • +1

washing hair everyday is bad, you are stripping away the natural oils in your hair which lead to a dry scalp and dandruff. also washing your hair with warm or hot water is also bad.

    • +1

These are classic symptoms of ADHD/OCD or being on the Autism spectrum, among other things. Yes, your wife is right.

Not that it's clinically significant. Just not quite normal. Whatever the hell normal is. I have similar quirks, just not the same as yours.

  • +2

You shower in the morning because you stink from sweating…… OP you might not notice but your coworkers certainly do :)

    • -6

WTF who sweats in their sleep that much theyā€™d smell? You should try deodorant.

      • Deodorant only masks the smell which makes it worse… Whether our sweat stinks or not is up to the individual…. You probably don't notice your own body odour but others certainly do, just like you won't notice if you have bad breath. Better safe than sorry.

        • Are you saying everyone sweats in their sleep so thatā€™s why we should shower in the morning as well?

My wife would be the first one to tell me if I had BO from not showering in the morning.

          • @bobwokeup: Iā€™m quite surprised to find most people here donā€™t realise they sweat at night!?

        • +2

Not everyone has bad stinky sleep genes like u bro, lol!

          • +2

@HangryCakeStore: sweating in your sleep is news to me and sounds just wrong - ideal temp for sleep is supposedly cooler than living, so say 15C - in which case if you're sweating during sleep maybe it's your bad karma coming back to give you nightmares ?

I put a sticker on my bedhead to remind me of something I read - over 23C ambient - one sheet only, under 23C one blanket, under 18C two blankets, under 12C doona.

    • +1

So you don't sweat at all during the day ?

    • This was my first thought too, OP is one of those people who don't realise they reek…

  • My wife and I both shower at night before bed, because, uh, cuddling is better when you're nice and fresh.
Plus I feel better sleeping after a shower.
And I have a quick shower in the morning so I can wash my hair.
    Simples.

    • We are the same. Have been for years.

We can work out whoā€™s getting a leg over and who isnā€™t by a lot of comments. Or thereā€™s a lot of dirty shagging.

  • Why won't you? šŸ˜·

  • Personally I only shower at night.

Why do you shower at night instead of in the morning?

    • +1

Simple because I sweat during the day and not when Iā€™m sleeping.

      • +1

I started morning showers whilst staying in hotels in WA. Quick wet my body, turn off water, thin soap and then quick flush. Back in the European winters we were allocated 1 hot bath a week. Bedsheets were white cotton and got boiled with 95 degrees.

        • +1

Ah cool, I didnā€™t know that. Funny as I do the same in my night shower. Saves so much water turning it off in between.

  • +4

because john wick does the same

  • +3

My shower is in the morning due to bird-nest hair. It is not fixed by handful water. .

    • +1

Basin shower. Face and hair. Cold water. Multiple splashes.

If you're not awake and still have bird nest hair after that then you're in a coma and you need to check your hair for actual birds.

  • +1

Where is the ā€œall of the aboveā€ option?

  • +2

Mate, how can you not shower in the morning.

    • -1

Why when Iā€™m clean and a wash of the face is all that is needed to freshen up?

      • You've been laying in a bed for at least 8 hours and before that for probably an hour or so after you had a shower. Bro, you aren't clean.

        • Not sure what you do in your sleep bro but I rest peacefully and definitely donā€™t sweat. No one will admit it but itā€™s a habit and you donā€™t NEED to shower in the morning. Itā€™s cool I get it, takes time to change habits and most wonā€™t even try but I donā€™t want to be like that.

          • +1

@bobwokeup: You do need to shower in the morning if you didn't shower at night.

If you don't sweat at night in the summer then good for you, but a lot of people do hence the preference to shower in the morning.

I'm convinced you are a troll.

            • +1

              @onetwothreefour:

You do need to shower in the morning if you didn't shower at night.

Of course you have to shower at some point. But that's not what we are talking about.

If you sweat badly in 20C doing nothing for 8 hours then you must smell like a cross between a horse fart and a dead possum by the afternoon whether you shower in the morning or not.

I cannot understand how bobwokeup is getting so much hate.

              • +3

@the wiz: Probably because they were not listening to replies and kept saying their way was the only correct way. Also they had previously posted this same topic a couple of years ago so should have just referred to that post instead of creating a new one.

              • -1

@the wiz: Itā€™s OzBargain itā€™s all about hate if you say something the wrong way.
Youā€™re right itā€™s all about how much you sweat. If you sweat in your sleep then it makes to shower in the morning but most do it out of habit.

  • +3

I live in Qld. Thatā€™s a shower in the morning and night cos Iā€™m a sweaty mess from the humidity. A deodorant just wonā€™t cut it.

  • -1

Personally I only shower at night.

In the morning my routine isā€¦Not only does it save time but it also saves our precious water, so a win win.

See the contradiction in your own statement?

    • +1

Please explain? A quick wash of the face using water from washing my hands, is that what you mean?

      • +2

No. You take shower in the evening which will take the same amount of water if you would have taken one in the morning.

        • Yes but my point has always been you get sweaty during the day as youā€™re up and about but not as much during the night, so thatā€™s why I asked the question. Everyone should shower once a day which should be nighttime but clearly many on here still shower in the morning as well or worse only in the morning.

          • @bobwokeup:

            worse only in the morning.

You are judging others by what you think is acceptable for you is acceptable for everyone else. Some people like to start a new day feeling fresh and shower in the morning definitely helps.
