  • Great deal. Any upcoming deals on an Audio Interfaces that this can be linked up with?

  • Can anyone tell me if this would be suitable for someone learning piano/keyboard? Complete beginner.

Hi, this is a controller keyboard, it needs to be used with software on a computer of some sort, it will not work standalone as it doesn't have any sounds or internal speakers.

      • Any suggestion for a keyboard with a reasonable standalone selection of sounds and also a USB MIDI interface for 8 yo kids to learn and play? They're interested in both learning to play but also sequencing and composing on the computer.

Budget up to 300, tentatively. Internal speakers optional but welcome.

You can go with a Casio CT-S300, this is a standalone keyboard but also can connect to a PC via USB and act as a controller.

    • To added to Elichu's reply this controller only has a 25 keys compared to a full piano's 88 keys. 66 keys are enough to start and most songs can be played on a 72 key instrument.

While this is a good deal, I wouldn't recommend it for learning the piano / keyboard. I have one of these ( white version ). I would recommend getting a decent electric piano that would suit your budget (the more keys the better). As the other comments have pointed out 25 keys is quite limited and the requirement for a computer + audio software probably isn't something your going to want to shell out for, as you will need it to work this keyboard. If you want to make electronic music and need to play simple chords then this would ideal for a mobile setup or if you have limited desk space.

    • Thanks for all the replies! I'll keep looking then. Just looking for something entry level but dont want something too basic. Second hand might be the best.

    • This is not a good option if you're thinking of playing the piano. Get a keyboard with 61 keys or maybe something smaller so you can learn to use both hands.

Akai is okay for this. You won't be able to learn from YouTube tutorials as most of them are 61 key keyboards

I have MK3 Play and found myself stuck in the same situation.

This is a good option if you wanna learn how to make EDM or other electronic music.

I want a controller to compose music.

Can you go up octaves somehow on this?

I currently only have an android phone and a chromebook.
Will this work with either of those?

Is there one with more keys that is also a budget price?

    • +2

Yes there is octave shift buttons which help you quickly go up or down octaves as needed. We do have other controllers which range in number of keys from 25. 37, 49 61 and even 88. let me know how many keys you are interested in and i can get you the prices on a couple models.

  • I have the Akai Fire controller, but its specifically for FL studio. Would it be worth getting this as well? I use a variety of VSTs and plugins.

  • anyone know how to find out the actuation force / gf for the various buttons and keys on midi keyboards like these?

  • This is a good mini midi controller for a great price. Keys are much better feeling than the Akai mini. It's very well reviewed and the keys and pads feel excellent. They are not full sized keys but not super small either. I would have bought this deal but i have a similar Nektar 25 key with 8 pads (LX25?) already.
I quickly upgraded to an 88 key keyboard and a 16 pad device (Maschine MK2) though as i wanted more octaves immediately available to trial virtual instruments and more pads to put samples on.
I've kept my Nektar for traveling though still.
