A huge shoutout to @fauxtographies for tipping me off about this deal.

This deal seems to be only available at Ampol Foodary and Ampol Woolworths MetroGo service stations. These locations usually do not have any signage regarding this deal, but you should ask the attendant whether their AmpolCash gift cards are discounted by 5%.

This should be stackable with any Ampol cashback offer for instore spending, including the current AMEX cashback offer.

For anyone unfamiliar with AmpolCash gift cards:

  • AmpolCash physical gift cards (i.e. the gift cards in this deal) are accepted at all service stations listed on the Ampol store locator with EFTPOS facilities, including EG Ampol.1

  • AmpolCash Digital gift cards are only redeemable at 62% of service stations listed on the Ampol store locator… and if anyone was wondering, EG Ampol service stations do not accept AmpolCash Digital gift cards.

Other tips in regards to AmpolCash physical gift cards:

  • They can be redeemed in conjunction with most fuel discount offers available at Ampol.

  • They cannot be used as a payment method for FuelPay via the Ampol app, nor Pay at Pump via the EG Club app.

  • AFAIK, they cannot be used to pay for any gift cards at Ampol or EG Ampol service stations. I have tried this at both types of service stations in the past (although not recently) and got error messages on the EFTPOS terminal every time saying that my payment method was not permitted.

  • Even if you set a PIN on an AmpolCash physical gift card, you do not need to enter the PIN to redeem the gift card if you paying instore. Swiping the gift card and only pressing Enter on the EFTPOS terminal when prompted for a PIN is sufficient to redeem the funds on the gift card.

  • The only ways you can check the balance of an AmpolCash physical gift card are to (1) check the receipt for the last purchase made using the gift card, (2) calling the AmpolCash team during operating hours or (3) emailing the AmpolCash team.

  1. AmpolCash physical gift cards can only be used at unattended locations if the gift card has PIN verification enabled.
    - You can enable PIN verification at the time of purchase by telling the attendant you would like to set a PIN. The attendant will ask you to swipe the gift card and key in your desired PIN.
    - Otherwise, you can email [email protected] with the gift card number on the front of the card and a copy of the gift card proof of purchase and request PIN verification to be enabled on the gift card. ↩

      The digital AmpolCash cards can not be used at all Ampols … they're not accepted at the 'Caltex Woolworths' (EG Group) stores for example. But the physical cards are accepted at all stores.

        The Reward Gateway deal is better if:

        • You are happy to deal with digital gift cards.
        • You were only planning on spending money at an Ampol accepting digital gift cards (and there are over 1,200 Ampol service stations across Australia that accept them).
        • You were going to purchase an AmpolCash gift card using a card supporting 3-D Secure.
        • You do not have an Ampol near you participating in the physical gift card deal, but an Ampol near you accepts AmpolCash Digital. For example, I don’t think a single TAS Ampol outside of Hobart is selling AmpolCash physical gift cards at a 5% discount, but a lot of TAS Ampol outside of Hobart accept AmpolCash Digital gift cards.

        This deal is better if:

        • You do not have access to Reward Gateway (and I reckon that would be most people on OzBargain).
        • You want the flexibility of spending money at an Ampol that may or may not accept digital gift cards.
        • You want a denomination other than $50 or $100.
        • You want to try and stack this deal with a cashback offer from a credit card provider (e.g. AMEX).
        • You prefer using a physical gift card over a digital gift card. I honestly find payment with a physical gift card so much faster and easier, especially when a lot of service station attendants assume you are going to pay by card.
        • You want to use an EFTPOS card or a prepaid gift card (or even cash) as a payment method. Reward Gateway does 3-D Secure checks on each payment, so OnlyONE Visa gift cards, Vanilla Visa gift cards and Coles Mastercard gift cards (as examples) will fail those checks and will be rejected by the payment processor.
        • You are using a credit card that gives you extra perks for spending money at a service station.

        Each to their own, I say.

      That should be fine, as long as the staff member does not stop you… but I really doubt an Ampol staff member would be picky about the payment method you use.

      I was able to use a Coles Mastercard gift card last year to purchase an AmpolCash gift card during a previous AmpolCash gift card deal, and I would be really surprised if Ampol started declining prepaid gift cards as a payment method for gift cards.

      Purchased 2x$100 yesterday using 2 separate Coles Master Gift cards in SA and both worked just fine.

      The staff at service station was quite puzzled on why I used 2 cards that looked the same to him though.

      Purchased using the Prepaid MC from Coles. Bought 2 x $250 Ampol cards both at a 5% (Billed $237.50 per Coles MC). Purchased at Ampol Foodary in Mt Lawley, Perth. Gift cards were behind the counter and were activated by the attendant after payment. From what I could see there were 25,50,100 and 250. Some of the physical gift cards had a promotional 5% off signage on them (the attached paper) and some did not. After questioning the attendant in regards to the discount she confirmed all of the physical gift cards had 5% off whether they had the 5% logo on them or not. The terms and conditions state this on each card at the rear with the specific dates as per the description above.

      I didn’t get the tracking email and now when I log in to my account the offer doesn’t appear saved anymore. It’s disappeared!

      Edit: it’s moved to savings although the credit hasn’t appeared in my transactions. Phew!

      How does Digital AmpolCash work?

      AmpolCash Digital gift cards are digital gift cards that use a QR code. You will need to present the QR code to the service station attendant when paying instore, so the attendant can scan the barcode to redeem your gift card.

      AmpolCash Digital gift cards are not redeemable at some Ampol locations, including EG Ampol and unattended service stations. AmpolCash Digital gift cards also do not work on Ampol FuelPay.

      Can I split payment? What about using multiple AmpolCash cards in the same transaction, is that allowed?

      The answer depends on the type of Ampol service station you go to.

      If you are paying instore, you can do split payments between multiple AmpolCash physical gift cards in one transaction at Ampol Foodary, Ampol Woolworths MetroGo and EG Ampol. I am not sure how Ampol franchise service stations (other than EG Ampol) handle split payments involving AmpolCash physical gift cards, as those locations may use their own payment systems.

      You cannot use multiple AmpolCash physical gift cards at unattended Ampol service stations, as they can only accept payment from one card at a time.

      Additionally, you can do split payments between multiple AmpolCash Digital gift cards in one transaction when paying instore at Ampol Foodary and Ampol Woolworths MetroGo. I am not sure whether Ampol franchise locations accepting AmpolCash Digital gift cards can redeem multiple AmpolCash Digital gift cards in one transaction.
