175J of surge protection is about… 10x less than required to do anything.

I'm half sarcastically wondering if maybe just a really bad soldering job would provide 175J.

I'd buy the one without, just to avoid supporting this kind of marketing BS.

As relentlessM8 said, the one you have posted it's not surge protected where the one I have posted it's surge protected.

Good deal, But just so everyone is on the same page here, 175J surge protection is practically worthless and wont protect jack.

The formula I always see is 500k -> 1k for things that are kinda sensitive 2k+ for things you actually care about (ie TV, Sounds system, computer).

the ol' crowd favourite is on sale for $35 - https://www.amazon.com.au/CyberPower-Overload-Protection-Fil…

if you don't mind the occasional loose socket :/

EDIT: umart, saveonit, etc will let you save a few extra $s if pick up is an option, or just wait for SE to have 3 pack for $49 again

    • What does a surge protector even do, disconnect the board from the power when it detects a surge? And if the surge is over 175J then it won't work and your computer and xbox and stuff will be fried?

      • iirc they sacrifice themselves to absorb some of the surge. This is why they don't last forever and the good ones will tell you when they need replacing.

The surge protector linked in this thread however does… nothing. Well, except fool some people.

        • The old crowd favourite one that I ordered, CyberPower? I'm actually just hoping the USB ports on it have a path to ground as I have a USB headphone DAC I use for powered speakers that causes speakers to buzz, except when it's connected to a grounded USB port. And I've tried everything but the only fully grounded USB port I can find is on my PC but I don't want to use a PC just to power a DAC for some speakers.

          • @AustriaBargain: Mergh, I've never had to troubleshoot this stuff, but problems caused by grounding (or not) in audio gear sounds like a right pain to have to deal with.

@rumblytangara: I should just buy a new DAC. A headphone amp probably shouldn't be used as a DAC for speakers anyway. And I want something with a remote control for volume. But I've had this for so long, can't bring myself to throw it away.

    • So do you suggest that, in general, we should stick to buying expensive surge protected power boards over cheaper ones?

Seems like expensive ones are, generally, better quality? Just curious

I've not used surge protected boards for… decades. Unless you're in an area with iffy power, I don't think they are required. And metro Australia seems to have a pretty good grid compared to some other countries.

They won't do jack with lightning strikes.

I'm just an old school techie. I'd be interested to know what a formal trained electrician thinks of all this though.

Given the low efficacy of the surge protection in the real world of this you are better looking at other options. If you really need surge protection get a reputable model featuring surge protection of substance OR save a few cents and get the model linked in the comments which has no surge protection.

Having no surge protection is actually handy at times as you know what it will do- just pass power and not interfere with ethernet over power, trip on overload too early, etc.

  • Amazon still has the 4 outlet one for a decent price.
