How do you supposed to type without the letters?!

    • +10

If you don't know which letter is where you probably shouldn't be using one anyways.

    • +17

      Boomer proof keyboard

    • +2

Learn to touch type. Use the bumps on F and J to position your hands.

    • +4

      Bad ass typists only.

  • What kind of poser uses keycaps without inscriptions….I know one actually…

    • +3

Any opinions on people with just dots?

      • +3

        I smell a distinguished keyboard gentleman (https://dailyclack.com/products/gmk-dots-r2)

        • I clicked on your link and fakespot came up with a dozen red Xs with scam warnings, bad customer service, no returns etc. Has anyone used Daily Clack with some success?

          • @Samdell: They're popular in the mech keyboard community, I've bought switches from them before and it was all good. Had shipping/tracking info and even got a free sticker.

          • +1

@Samdell: They're legit, not sure why that would pop up. I've been buying from them for about 4 years.
If you buy an in stock item it will ship out in a couple of business days.
If you buy a group-buy item or a pre-order then you will have to wait until they're manufactured and shipped to daily clack (which is stated on the product listing).

      • No? How is it related?

    • +6

Interestingly, this was the pioneer the reinvigorated interest in mechanical keyboards. Been around for ten or so years, and used to sell for $300+.

Always thought that anyone who bought one only bought them to show off their L337 H4xx0r skillz .

    • +2

Same people using non qwerty layouts. 😂

      • +3

Add one of those weird vertical mice and you'll have the most opinionated and most unproductive person in the office.

They are fun though, saying "vim sucks emacs sucks perl sucks lisp sucks" is all but guaranteed to set off a pointless tirade.

        • +1

Just quietly swapping over my vertical mouse as I type this……

        • Nothing wrong with LISP :-)

        • +1

          oddlyspecifc

  • +2

    Guaranteed fade free inscriptions!

  • is it silent click keys or loud ones ?

    • +3

they're brown so they are quite noisy. wouldn't be silent unless it literally said 'silent'

    • +2

i think browns are meant to be the middleground between Reds (relatively quiet) and Blues (typewriter sounds). I used to have a Brown for work in the office and Blue for home use. Definitely prefer the Blues, but to each their own.

This one looks like a decent deal; Cherry Blue, full size, and option to go BT 5.1 wireless for less money:
      https://www.mwave.com.au/product/leopold-fc900r-bt-pd-charco…

Cherry MX website also gives examples of what they sound like:

Psycho detected. You and I both ^5. But recently I've gone and committed the taboo of lubing blue switches, which gave birth to a monster that feels like the offspring of blue+brown. It's… oddly satisfying.

        • Blues always sound nice if you're the one creating the noise. I didn't mind blues but it was more for others :( tho now I have an appreciation for thock sounds.
what lube did you use on the blues? and what changed about it?

          • +3

@undien: I eventually grew a little tired of clickies and fell in love with thocky switches as you did. Had this old Coolmaster keeb with cherry blues just sitting in the corner so I decided to mod it with tape and foam, and lube the stabs and switches for fun. Also changed the caps from ABS to PBT. It's not hotswappable and I don't really know much about (de)soldering and couldn't be bothered to learn how to either so I just lubed them sparingly with a Superlube 51014 by injecting it gently from the top. To be honest it turned out super weird… some switches feel more like tactile, some borderline linear, while the others are still clicky but a lot less so. To make it even more weird the mod added quite a bit of thock to it, turning it into a total Frankenstein. I was just laughing at the end result initially but ended up falling in love with it after a day or 2. It feels as though I'm getting the best of all worlds? Try it on some old blues if you have the time, it's really quite a fun experience if you're not a purist!

            • @gasura: Haha sounds awesome, a thocky clicky keyboard!

All my keyboards are not hotswappable either. I've been looking at Keychrons recently and I was super sad I missed the deal previously with all the keychrons being on sale :( oh well. Gonna wait till it next is on sale haha I'm not that fussed.
I do have blues lying around which I can experiment with so I might do that, the lubes I looked at are pretty expensive (krytox 205g0) do you have any place you recommend for those (or where you got your superlube 51014)?

    • Cherry MX Silent Red or Silent Black switches are what you want.

There's also others out there, but silent mechanical switches are generally a speciality item

I have silent red for work and it's acceptable for office use, black keys are just bit heavier weighted which I might change to. They're both more typing orientated keyboards vs gaming or whatever

I maintain the idea that people who like blank keycaps (e.g this, or GMK Dots) are ego stroking - and there's nothing wrong with that - they just have to admit it. I touch type, but I still like having lettering on keys.

    • Next update: a function to show/hide keys

      • +1

Already done - RGB + these keycaps

        • Great great - sometimes it's just boring to see these letters every day

    • +1

Yes what’s the advantage is having blank keycaps?

      • Aesthetics. Besides, legends are largely redundant if you can touch type.

        • +3

If you can touch type then it doesn’t matter if the keycaps are blank or not as you never look at them

          • +3

@illusion99: What's the point of custom keycaps? 🤔

            • +7

@ihfree: What’s the point in life in general? You’re born, you live a little and then you die

              • +4

@illusion99: You can live a little more if you customise your keyboard.

                • +2

@ihfree: Yes you can also live a little bit more by building your own watch and then you can watch the seconds hand slowly tick away representing your life ticking away.

                  • +1

@illusion99: You certainly could. More importantly, what indices would the watch have? Arabic numerals?

                    • +1

@ihfree: Thinking tritium baton ones so you can see your life tick away in the dark

                      • +1

@illusion99: Blank indices. Interesting choice. You should fill your life with hobbies, such as customising keyboards, rather than sitting alone in the dark.

                        • +1

@ihfree: I have my cat sitting with me in the dark. Her eyes will glow from the light of the tritium

              • +1

@illusion99: And the middle part is too damn hard any way so we need to skip the second step & go straight to No 3

      • +1

        It's really to let people know you're a l337 h4x0r

    • +2

Stops noobs from messing with your computer

    • +2

Maybe. What about all the RGB leds in keyboards these days, and cases with windows showing fans with pretty colours? What about all the “rugged” aesthetic of anything gaming?

I’d prefer black nothing than all that distracting mess of rainbows in my desk setup.

Most people “stoke” their ego in some way, it just comes across as passive aggressive to be saying people need to admit stoking their egos when owning keyboards with no markings on them. There’s been a few in these comments judging the customers of these keyboards.

I actually have a CM Storm Stealth keyboard which has small markings on the front of the key caps. I really like it and in the years I’ve had it, the markings haven’t worn at all.

The main market for these DAS Keyboards are serious Linux types (hackers) and coders who don’t want distractions and can touch type easily.

  • +4

Good if you work in an office where people borrow your keyboard all the time and never return it.

    • +1

      That's called theft my friend.

      • it's annoying AF but i wouldn't go so far as to call it theft since it is company property and i can usually find it again after a walking around various desks.

i once came into work and found just the monitor sitting there. the thought of immediately walking right out came across my mind.

        • You hot desking? That's pretty hilarious though.

          • -1

@Munki: nah, i did have a dedicated workspace but moved offices at least once a year, as did everyone else except the manager and receptionist. looking back, it does make for an amusing anecdote and i would've had the perfect excuse to go home since i didn't have a computer to work on lol

    • How do you know the people stealing your keyboard can’t also touch type?

      • +1

the kind of trogs who would do that typically can't. i shared rooms with a bunch of people in our small office of about 15-ish people. no one except the office admin and i could touch-type.

  • +2

Great keyboards. Ive been using my Pro Model S since 2013 I think and still using it now. I did buy the 3rd gen after, but felt weird compared to the Model S so I sold it.

Muscle memory is how I remember the letters.

  • +1

My wife would kill me if I bought this keyboard… hmmm….

  • +1

I like brown switches, a good compromise between feedback and noise.

  • You can find keyboard letter stickers in the Aliexpress for $2~$3 dollars.

  • Blank? Time to get some keyboard stickers, lol

  • For the price difference to the RRP you could buy a decent keycap set and still save

  • "Detachable Footbar" is actually a handy ruler (with proper measurements too!)

  • Coming up at $299. Am I missing a trick?

    • +2

      Looks like Das all folks!

  • I’ve owned three of these, two with the blue switches and one with the brown. The typing quality is excellent although the built in USB hub was flakey the two times I tried it.

  • Still using the blue switch DAS keyboard I've had now for over 10 years. Amazing quality.

    • Yup - nine years for me and my Cherry Blue DAS for MAC. Never missed a beat and used daily.

    • I don't think they make them as before. I bought a X50 and it only last me about 3 years when the C and the space bar started to fail. But it was a nice keyboard.

  • +1

I bought this brown Das 4 Ultimate in 2016 and thought it was pretty great coming from the clacky blue shiny plastic Das 3. But after picking up a Keychron Q10 with brown keys, it just doesn’t compare. Highly recommend trying keychron or nuphy boards over das these days.
Although it does have a USB hub on it which is nice for mouse and thumb drives.

  • Great keyboard for those learning to touch-type, and for those who can touch-type and prefer the aesthetics of a character-less keyboard.
Personally I have a bunch of keycaps and switches, and from time to time I change them around just for a different experience.
