That video of him online showing Dr Jordan Peterson his method of holding breath by over oxygenating his blood beforehand is trippy…it was easy to stop breathing for ages….he has made some very interesting finds in his “efforts”….he is a crackpot though….

    • +5

I haven't seen the videos but I suspect what you are describing is more hyperventilating rather than hyper-oxygenating his blood.
I am not aware of any way to directly increase oxygen in the blood without increasing your fraction of inspired oxygen beyond 21%
Hyperventilating your pCO2 down from 40 to 10 (fairly extreme) would increase the paO2 from 93 to about 135 but really as a secondary result of lowering your pCO2

Your SpO2 would remain 100% and can't go above that. The oxygen carrying capacity of blood is mostly mediated by your SpO2 and haemoglobin concentration rather than the amount of oxygen dissolved in your blood (pO2)

I think that at a pO2 of 135 and a pCO2 of 10 your respiratory drive is really mostly influenced by your CO2 state rather than your oxygenation state

Happy to be proven wrong though. I am not an expert. This is just what I read from the internet.

So how about you watch the videos? He has been well researched by doctors and scientists who have measured all of those parameters as well as holding numerous endurance records. Or at least a couple of docos?

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaMjhwFE1Zw

Wim Hof first caught the attention of scientists when he proved he was able to use meditation to stay submerged in ice for 1 hour and 53 minutes without his core body temperature changing. Since then, he’s climbed Mount Everest in his shorts, resisted altitude sickness, completed a marathon in the Namib Desert with no water and proven under a laboratory setting that he’s able to influence his autonomic nervous system and immune system at will.

Almost everything Wim has done was previously thought to be impossible - but he’s not a freak of nature.

      • more hyperventilating rather than hyper-oxygenating his blood

I once tried his breathing technique, courtesy of a (free) YouTube video, and it doesn't seem to be hyperventilating.

Hyperventilating will quickly make you feel light headed, Wim's method (which is pretty much rapid breathing with forceful exhalation) doesn't give any of the side effects of hyperventilation other than allowing you to hold your breath for significantly longer.

Humans can't sense oxygen levels, but they can sense CO2 levels in the air and in your own bloodstream, so I think you're probably correct when you say it's just lowering the CO2 in your blood. It's just that Wim's method somehow "hacks" your body so this doesn't cause the usual side effects.

I'm not particularly interested in how it works, but it does, and spending ten minutes trying it out will most likely convince you too.

Ice baths and ultra-cold therapy are used by the AIS, so it's likely Wim has another "truth" there, although it's unlikely he was the first "discoverer" of this truth.

And cold shock is widely thought to give a kick-start to your immune system, so there's a speck of truth in those claims too. But I do agree he wildly over-claims the benefits, probably to make more money.

I recommend finding one of his books at the local library and reading it for free, and trying those ideas, before handing over the price of this deal.

                ChatGPT

Vaccines save millions of lives every year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), vaccines prevent an estimated 2-3 million deaths per year from diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), influenza, and measles. In addition to preventing deaths, vaccines also prevent a range of illnesses and disabilities. The impact of vaccines on public health is significant, and they are considered one of the most cost-effective public health interventions available

Breathtaking irony & hubris required to attempt to impugn my level of knowledge & education when you're the one coping hard that the wider world laughs at these batshit crazy claims - which have NOT been proven or endorsed by anyone with a clue (or a brain) - that breathing techniques can assist in MS, COVID or Parkinson's! Holy shit I know people can be dumb but this is taking it to a whole other level.

              Ahh

              there’s so much verified content

Meh if it's not on https://scholar.google.com/ it's not verified. That's what I love about sovsits/antivaxers/vax-hesitant. They bang in about research, but hate actual peer reviewed research. This is where people with knowledge in the field check and verify the research. It's not perfect, it does have mistakes. But at least it's much less to make mistakes then a single knowledgeable person in the field and many non-knowledgeable people in the field make.

Sure it's nice to be a smug, I know the secret that all you dumbasses, so Im smarter then you sheeple contrarian. But it doesn't make you right. It doesn't make you smart.. Everyone, especially smart people, have had some crackpot ideas. But it doesn't make them true. Human's are very very good at self bias and infallibility. Which is why peer reviewed science is considered the standard. Again it doesn't always get it right, but it gets it right hundreds or thousands or millions of times more then a single person does.

              • @M00Cow: what the heck are you talking about anti vax etc and please just enjoy your day and just keep open mind as you don’t have to pay money to enjoy most of his content. He is just trying to help people and his guiness book of record holder speaks volumes.

                just breath

                • @kamoy:

google it dude and youtube there’s so much verified content

So again where did you get your verified research/evidence/homework?

Maybe I'm a sim, but I believe I'm breathing are you? Or are you just a Russian bot causing discourse?

                  • @M00Cow: you really need to read about breathing techniques and not talk ..if you don’t want to waste time not looking into his work then just stop commenting as people here see having results using his teachings. no i’m human wasting my precious time txting this to you

                    • @kamoy: Well direct mate. Show me. I'm willing to be proven wrong. i am! But airy fairy, do you own research means you don't know either, which is fine.

That's the thing with peer reviewed research convince your equals, your peers you're right and people will trust you. Banging on a YouTube video, doesn't mean you're right, just that you can post a YT video.

  • +1

Haha "coping hard." 😂 Ease off the Primes mate.

Get off your computer and go out and take a nice deep breath…….. nice……..and ….slowly.. 😉😘

    • Classic, not a single attempt to provide evidence supporting the wild & fraudulent claims, just ad hominem. How very Scientology of you! Oh wait, don't tell me you're into that as well…

      • You really are injured by this post deal lol

        • Maybe I can try breathing differently to cure me! Like if I had MS…or Parkinson's Disease! /s

Actually I think we're on the same page about a few things medical (per above) I just can't abide helping snake oil salesmen get richer, and then people with literally no vested interest - unless this is some obscure MLM scheme - brigading posts in an attempt to legitimise the message.

Some breathing methods have long been recognised in many cultures to have health benefits, sometimes. Insults also affect health. Your choice hehe.

  • Me

What is the "WIM HOF Method" ?

    ChatGPT

The Wim Hof Method is a set of techniques developed by Wim Hof, also known as "The Iceman," that focus on using breathing exercises and cold exposure to improve physical and mental health. The method is based on three pillars: breathing, cold therapy, and mindset.

The breathing exercises involve taking deep breaths and exhaling slowly, followed by periods of holding the breath. The goal is to increase oxygen intake, reduce stress, and improve immune function.

There you go, saved you $231 now that's a bargain
