Excellent little unit. But this is what it should normally cost, >$100 is a bit ridiculous for a one-trick pony.

    • +2

You are 100% paying for the ease of use. I have one, bought second hand, and I love it. Fully appreciate you can get something off AliExpress for the fraction of the price but this "just works" and your parents won't be calling for tech support.

    • +1

What does it do? Just detect wind?
I get the IR part, but my AC doesn't report back to the remote.

      • It's an IR blaster specifically for older AC units and connected to a pretty good app. You can control all aspects of the AC unit through the app (mode, fan, swing, temp) as well as setting timers/schedules. Temperature scheduling (if room reaches x temp then heat, if y temp then cool) might be behind a paywall though.

Ah a shame they're for Origin customers only.

Just a heads up. My 2 units died a couple of months outside of warranty and support is washing their hands clean. Super disappointing.

Also the majority of its smart functions are locked behind a subscription model.

I'd probably go for a cheaper broadlink IR unit next time.

    • +8

Just for balance my 5 units have been rock solid for years. Connectivity to my wifi brilliant. I’ve never wanted the features locked behind the subscription.

It’s been the almost exact opposite experience to my eufy security cameras which have been nothing but pain.

    • +1

What did you pay? Consider your rights via ACCC statutory warranty

    • +3

I have 5 units, one failed but support was amazing and sent me a new one with express shipping.
So far they have been rock solid.

I don't care about their paywall features, mine just integrate with Home Assistant and it does all the automation and smart stuff.

I've been using my Broadlinks for 7 years, controlling the aircons, TV's, stereo, bedside fans etc and they have been perfect. I have 5 of them all linked to Alexa for voice control.

Never seen the point of these Sensibo's when the Broadlinks control so many different devices and are cheaper.

      • +1

Does google home recognise the Broadlink as a thermostat?

        • Alexa does if the broadlink uses the USB cable with a temperature sensor on it.

      • +2

I used to use Broadlinks with Home Assistant to control my ACs. I tried one of these and bought a second one not long after as it is able to recognize when the original remote control is used, so the AC's settings are in sync with HA.

e.g. when sitting on the sofa it's quicker to press the power button and set the temperature on the remote that's just sitting there rather than turn down the TV volume so voice commands can be heard, then issuing a voice command to turn the AC on, then specifying a temperature. With the Broadlink, HA would have no idea whether or not the AC is on or off, or what the temperature is set to.

It's a trivial matter of course - it's just nice to have the HA dashboard actually reflect the actual state of the AC.

        • What properties/actions does it expose on the entity in HA? Sounds like a better option than the BroadLink I have with a fairly dumb aircon. I’ve not been able to work out keeping sync with what temperature the remote is sending to the unit.

IR blaster is the way to go. Cheap and does the same thing.

  • Good price for this specific unit. Genio IR Remote is another cheaper option though. $30 at Kmart. Controls anything. Not sure feature parity. I’ve got mine working with Siri Shortcuts for aircon, stereo, TV all on same unit. Limited functions on the aircon but I just used OOTB unit preset on the device. It does allow custom remotes, though seems aircons send combined data not just single button press so not sure if it’d work.

    BroadLink RM4 Mini
    $28 on Amazon

Much more versatile, controls any IR device. Can create timers etc. Been using them for years.

    Works with Google and Alexa

      Even better US $7.18

      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005019779055.html

      Built in temp humidity sensor.

Turn AC on between X and X if temp reaches X amount
Turn AC off when temp reaches below x

      • @Korban Dallas do you know if this integrates with Home Assistant? Or even better, if you can liberate it from Tuya with Tasmota/OpenBeken or the like?

Edit: Actually yes it seems supported by OpenBeken as listed [here #199] (https://openbekeniot.github.io/webapp/devicesList.html). Possibly compatible with CloudCutter too.

        Teardown & firmware [here] (https://www.elektroda.com/rtvforum/topic3920360.html).
        Guess I’m ordering a couple :)

        • Do these Broadlink things work with Tuya?

        • +1

I am using with tuya local in HA

      • Page not found anymore. Do you have another link or the product name to search by?

      • What do you do with humidity sensor information, do you have a humidifier?

    • +3

Having never owned a Broadlink of any of the other cheapo IR blasters, does it have provision for fan speed, swing both horizontal and vertical and mode?
And can it keep track of which mode it is in?

For example with the Sensibo, it keeps track of the state.
It also allows you to use the original remote (my parents need this when they come over) and then the Sensibo will re-sync the A/C by re-sending all the commands for the individual settings.

  • Any idea if it works with ducted system ???

    • Only if you have an IR remote system for it. Mine (samsung) doesnt.

      • I have tuya fingerbots turning my ducted system on and off. Not high tech but works a treat.

        • Wow. Had no idea this existed. Ta.

    • I am looking for exactly the same. Mine doesn't have IR / remote.

  • Have two of these, once setup they've worked ok for me. But you need the new model for HomeKit.
    Do not work without internet.

    • +2

They have a semi-officially supported HomeBridge plugin. I use that, and it’s flawless.

how is this better than Tuya WiFi IR Remote for around $5~$10? Which comes with temp/humid sensor for you to setup some home automation with.

    If (at home)
    during (day/night/specific time)
when (temperature over x, humidity over y)
    turn (on/off) aircon
delay (x minute) turn (off/on) aircon

    • Keen to know this too. Dont have one but just got 2 MHI Aircons installed and was looking at getting it since i used Tuya for some smart plugs already.

    • +1

This one recognizes when you use the aircon's IR remote to change settings. It'll reflect the changes in the app or in Home Assistant so your dashboard correctly shows what the AC is doing.

It's quite a lot of money just for that, but just look at how popular Hue bulbs are. :)

    • Maybe get the one supporting IR+RF that can control the garage door

  • +2

I have 3 that I've binned it's just too hard. To get full features you need the subscription service.

Another annoying feature that I'm sure all IR blasters have is the aircon unit beeping, everytime it sends a message to the unit to change the temp the unit beeps. Not ideal at night, Its just easier to use the units auto mode.

Also worth checking out the reviews on the Apple App store.

  • how do you get spike?

i logged into my origin account, but cannot see anything

  • I am with Origin on Gas and Electricity
How do I become Spike member ?
