    • Thanks for the feedback!

  • Wooo perfect timing - I'll bite the bullet for my 30 day Oct-November Japan trip :)

    • Same. Where are you heading to?

      • +2

Pretty much all over the place for 30 days. Yokohama (from Haneda) -> Gifu/Nagoya (for Ghibli Park) -> Hakodate/Sapporo -> Kyuushu and Fukuoka specifically for the Karatsu Festival then working my way slowly by rail back to Tokyo.

        • Thanks for the ideas! Planning to go October. I got one of the Sim too.

I was wondering if I can load it in a 4g modem and so a few of us can use for light browsing (socials, maybe even Netflix)

          • @limucat: 30GB won't go far if you're sharing it via hotspoting TBH. If you go that route, it might be better to do 4G modem rental or sometimes the AirBnB (if you're staying at one) provide them to you as part of the duration of your stay.

Glad it gave you some ideas as took me a while to distill where I wanted to go and what I wanted to given this is my third time. I made the mistake of not booking a longer stay and would not recommend my itinerary to anyone as it's a logistical nightmare as I would like to stay in the cities I'm going to for a longer period or be able to explore the different prefectures more intimately.

If you're going for a short time and/or you are there for your first time definitely take it a lot easier to absorb the cities and culture.

            • @simplycurious: I managed to do 5GB for about 10 days and had to buy locally for the remaining 5 days. When there's so many free hotspots available it's pretty easy to get by.

              • @Clear: Oh that's definitely doable on your own, but sharing is another thing and it does become incovenient.

                • @simplycurious: Oh sorry I missed limucat's part about sharing. Yeah that'll be more difficult.

                  • @Clear: Yea, will definitely look into a modem… Thx!

Hopefully a deal pops up here hahah

            • @simplycurious: Cheers. Will probably grab a modem for the others.

I do like your general itinerary but probably will focus on Hakodate area as it will be our third trip too.

The Karatsu festival looks fun. Thank u

        • I'm tempted to do Sapporo but with the shinkansen only going as far as Hakodate it seems like an all day trip unless you fly. I was thinking of settling for Sendai with a possible Aomori day trip.

I didn't know about the Karatsu Festival. Since I'm heading to Fukuoka I'll have to check it out.

          • +1

@Clear: Karatsu Festival is 2-4 November, but it's recommended to stay in Karatsu given the crowds, so I'm only staying for the first night.

I think it might be better to skip Aomori all together (except please check out the Nebuta Warasse musuem!), and do a day trip close by to Sendai from what I heard. Then if you don't want to go up to Sapporo, Hakodate was definitely very enjoyable but I really loved Sapporo when I went in Mid-November last time. Please have soup curry and Genghis Khan when you're up in Hokkaido! :)

          Mine's Sep.

    • I'm currently using the below eSIM in Japan. 1GB per day, resets everyday.

They use a local carrier (SoftBank) and do not roam from an overseas one. Many eSIM providers roam from carriers from other Asian countries and so the ping and general speed can be terrible.

  • Do the data only Sims work with Grab and GOJek in Thailand or Bali? Or do we need voice?

    • I had no issue using data only sims with grab in Thailand and Vietnam, but make sure to setup your payment while you're still in Australia in case your bank uses 2 factor authentication. I had to use a location spoof app to spoof into vietnam and then enter my card details since it didn't seem to work locally.

      • Is that because you didnt nofity your bank of your travel? Hopefully I don't run into that issue. Thanks!

        • I use ING and I notified them of my travel, once set up it worked smoothly.

    • In our experience we were able to use our data only SIM for Grab, GoJek I believe need local Indonesian number (note: Grab is also available in Indonesia)

      -Anton

      • Thanks GRAB it is then

  • Hey OP, planning on travelling around Asia in November this year, Multi Countries sounds perfect to us! How do I go on about buying and activating it for that time period? Saw the expiry date is 31/12/2023 but you also mentioned that eSIM will have to be activated within 6 months? Any way of buying now to activate later in Nov?
    Cheers!

    • Yes eSIM has to be activated within 6 months or it will expire - we have updated the post.

Physical SIM will last until 31/12/2023.

      -Anton

      • Right.. how long is the max months I can get out of the eSIM? Say I activated it (scan QR Code) closer to October, will it last me till at least December since the eSIM will only get fully activated once Iโ€™m connected in the country where it can be used, e.g. Japan?

        • The eSIM has to be scanned and connect to the network within 6 months.

          -Anton

  • At the last sale, I purchased a couple of these.

When I visited Vietnam, I used the Southeast asia 12 countries 15days 1GB daily eSIM.

Across the entirety of my stay in Vietnam, the connection was abysmally slow and often unusable. I followed the setup guide exactly, and also tried a variety of configurations without any success.

I am unsure of whether this reflected a problem with the provider, Viettel, or something else. Maybe 4G internet in Vietnam is just generally poor. I did visit a variety of cities.

I'll be using Asia 6 countries 30days 10GB eSIM in South Korea next week and hope that will be better.

    • Pls give us update! I bought the Japan Sim, would like to know what to expect. thank you

      • We have plenty of users in Japan without any speed issues (Japan is our most popular SIMs)

        -Anton

    • We have mixed reports for Vietnam but if you contacted us we may be able to help (reset or change some settings).

      -Anton

  • Do you have to activate it within a certain time period when you purchase a travel sim? Currently looking at the Asia Explorer Travel Sim Card 13 Countries | 30 Days

    • For Physical SIM you just need to insert the SIM into your phone to activate.

      -Anton

    Upvote for OP's write-up

    • +1

      Haha Thanks!

      -Anton

  • For eSim how do you scan the QR code viewed in the email on the iphone with the iphone ?

    • You will either need to print the QR code or have the QR code displayed on another device.

      -Anton

  • @TravelKon Your product page and the order confirmation email give conflicting information regarding eSIM scanning.

On the website page (https://www.travelkon.com.au/product/japan-travel-esim-30-daโ€ฆ) it states that "Please note that the eSIM must be scanned within 6 months of purchase to avoid expiration" That's all good, because the following sentence says "The eSIM will only activate when it connects to a supported network operator. For example, you can scan the eSIM in Australia without activating it. However, please ensure that you do not turn on data roaming until you reach your destination."

Yet in my order confirmation email, it says this: "Please scan the code ONLY WHEN YOU WANT TO ACTIVATE the plan, as it will be activated when the QR code is scanned and activated."

I'll be leaving for Japan at the end of December which won't be enough time if I must scan and activate the plan before October 6 months from now.

    • +1

Sorry for the confusion we will get that fixed.

In the meantime, let us shed some light

The eSIM must be scanned within 6 months or it will expire, in addition scanning the eSIM in Australia wonโ€™t activate the plan until it connects to a supported network (within the 6 months).

      -Anton

      • Hi TravelKon, just to confirm if I purchase eSim today, I can scan when I receive the email now in Australia, then it will activate when I arrive in Japan in December

        • No it has to connect to a supported network within 6 months of purchase, December is still too far off and the eSIM will expire by then.

          -Anton

      • So if I scan the eSIM in Australia in October, I have another 6 months to actually connect to the supported network (i.e. by April 2023)?

        • No the eSIM has to connect to a supported network within 6 months of purchase.

          -Anton

@TravelKon: In that case would I be able to apply for a refund? Your website and this post contain so much conflicting information. Why, for example is the expiry date of the plan still 31/12/2023? That date is not obtainable.

I've got a UK GiffGaff SIM. When we landed, I couldn't work out my number, so a good tip:

Text the word NUMBER to 43430.

Also, if you add ยฃ10 credit (not a Goodybag), the SIM will remain active - including global roaming - simply by using it every 6 months.

  • I am traveling to the Philippines, is there any sim that is only for the Philippines or do I need to go for the Asia explorer?
Is this cheaper than buying a cheap prepaid SIM on arrival?

    • +1

I'm not sure if you just need data or would like calls/texts as well but I'd suggest buying a cheap sim on arrival. Smart have been good for me, you can find their prepaid plans here. https://smart.com.ph/prepaid/promos

In the above link click all access data, you can get a month of data only for 299php ($8) or data + calls/texts for 499php ($13.50).

  • Anyone care to share experiences on eSim over physical sim ?

I am on boost prepaid and has no international roaming, would eSim give me access to receive iMessages or plain normal SMS (from android)

I assume if I swap out to the physical sim, all australia msg wonโ€™t be received while overseas?!

Please correct me if I am wrong

    • +1

Definitely esim has its advantages. I also am with boost and left my sim in there while on travels. You can still receive sms and boost allows wifi calling.

I am on boost prepaid and has no international roaming, would eSim give me access to receive iMessages or plain normal SMS (from android)

it's free to receive sms overseas - you don't need an international roaming pack

imessage requires data, so without roaming, you need wifi, or an esim

Using a Mobile phone Overseas - eSIM, Travel SIM, International Roaming

I assume if I swap out to the physical sim, all australia msg wonโ€™t be received while overseas?!

if you remove your boost sim, then yes you won't receive messages sent to that number

however, with a dual e/sim phone, you could have both your boost sim and a travel esim active

  • @TravelKon Can you please comfirm is this 50GB or 12GB in NZ?
    https://www.travelkon.com.au/product/uk-travel-sim-card-30-dโ€ฆ

  • This is exactly same business model as Simsdirect? Been supporting those guys, but Iโ€™ll give this one a go with the discount.

    • Thank you! We believe we have the best value SIM offerings and the most product range in the Australian market.

  • NEW Asia Explorer 12 (Countries) 30 Days(travelkon.com.au) 30 Days 30GB Data Only $55.20 31/12/2023

Thank OP, just got this but it is $56.8, not $55.2

    • Apologies will get it fixed

      -Anton

  • I'm going for 45 days in August. Something like holafly offers $127AUD for 60 days unlimited data, seems like the best price. HMMM whats the catch

  • Why are all the Japan sims data only? What if you also need to make calls?

    • These are data roaming SIMs (not local SIM) unfortunately there is no call option.

      -Anton

  • If I keep my primary Voda number open and disable the data roaming to avoid the international roaming charge, can I still receive sms overseas? My plan is to have the Voda as a back up (the only use would be receiving sms from banks etc), and use the data from the travel esim.

  • Hi @TravelKon

  • Iโ€™ll be traveling to Japan in around 3 weeks. Keen to purchase the 30gb eSim. Does the download speed get capped? as I saw that a lot of Japanese data plans do. And can I top up data if I run out? Thanks

    • +1

All we can promised is 4G speed for the full 30GB.

No top up feature yet at the moment, you can simply purchase another one.

I had terrible connection in Japan using their sim card, some areas I didnt get signals at all so would not buy again. Ubigi is the best in Japan if you have esim compatible phone, quick and easy set up, 10gb for 30 days for $22

    • Sorry to hear about your experience.

Our Japan eSIM uses dual network it can use KDDI or NTT DoCoMo (which is the number one provider in Japan).

Your phone may connect to KDDI and you can simply choose NTT DoCoMo as the alternative.

We ask all customer to contact us if they experience any issues and we may be able to help.

      -Anton

    • Which areas did you not get signal?

      • I believed it was in Lake Kawaguchigo area and subway area.

    • We sell the same SIM for $24 (on sale) not sure what you mean?

      -Anton

    • Seems like this deal is a bit cheaper?

  • I'm traveling to cambodia on may 31th. Looking at getting 30gb one, which one do you recommend? also am I able to call in that country with the sim? first time here

  • Just want to check that the China travel sims will bypass the China firewall so I can use apps like Facebook/Google for example? Thanks

    • +1

      Yes it will

      -Anton

  • Used SEA esim deal and works fine. Just bare in mind it uses taiwan or hong kong based telco and as a roaming provider all traffic route through there, meaning some australian websites were extremely slow, such as Optus. Tho most global services like Youtube etc works fine.

    • Most of the the Asia SIMs sold in the Australian market are the same i.e. They are not local sims, some uses China unicom ours uses Chungwa Telecom (Taiwan).

For most day to day browsing there should be minimal impact if any.

      -Anton

  • Just been looking at Indonesian Sim Options - these guys are not the cheapest even with discount. I guess what they are doing is making it more reliable?

For example best Indonesian sim option is telkomsel. Can get it from the official website, with same pick up at Bali airport, 25gigs, with same minutes for 150K IDR which is equivalent to 15$. Easy to do some research on travel forums.

    • Bali Airport option for that SIM is not available please check again (from telkomsel official).

We are the cheapest option for Airport pick up.

If you are willing to go to the city it will be cheaper for sure.

      -Anton

      • I just came back from bali. I paid 80000 IDR whick is about $8 AUD for 25 gig 30 days amd 25 local min from telkomsel bali airport.

Forgot to mention. 80k for both my wife and me. So basically I paid $4 for 25 gig.

        • This is 1 SIM card, right?

          You paid basically $8.

        • You could pick it up from the airport?

          • @LukyTom: Yes. They do it right in front of you at the airport.

  • Iโ€™m on a Cruise for 14 Days in November starting in HongKong and visiting Vietnam, Thailand & Singapore. Would the sim work whilst at sea or only when close to land? Would it connect itself automatically between the different countries or would I have to manually do something?

    • Hello it won't work at sea, only when you are on land.

The sim should work automatically between the different countries.

      -Anton

  • I have a boost pre paid here in Australia and Iโ€™m going to uk mid sept to mid oct so appreciate 4 weeks.
I have a iPhone SE and whatโ€™s best option for me and possible wife who is boost also.
Can we add esim to our phones? We obviously would only need for our trip.

I donโ€™t know much about esim and normal sim in same phone but I take we canโ€™t receive calls and txt to the uk from australia or just txt.
And obviously we Wouk use our esim while there?

Have plenty time yet just planning ahead

    • Same question asked here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13632286/redir

So long as your phone can support esim then yes keep your boost sim in your phone and grab an esim

      • How do I know my phone can support esim?

        • +1

          Have you tried asking it?
If it doesn't respond, maybe google

    • The UK sim is with Giffgaff, they don't support esim. We ported from Boost to Telstra prepaid for this reason.

      • If my phone does support esim is there esim cards out there for uk that offer this or maybe it looks like I just have to swap over my boost sim to giffgaff sim.
I believe with esim I can keep my boost sim in but still have an esim active which might be better as will still get messages on my boost but yet using the esim in uk.
