  • which is their best lawnmower available here?

there seem to be more models available in the USA that you cant get here.

    • +1

Choose your deck size, choose whether you want self-propelled or not, and you'll find you've only got one choice, so that'll be the best for you.

For most people with a decent sized yard, you'd probably want the largest 52cm deck.

      • Plus steel vs plastic…only the one steel deck model though, right?

        • Yep. If you have anything other than perfect debris free lawn - no twigs, stones and rocks. Go with plastic as it’s cheaper and lighter. Otherwise, get the steel deck.

          • @TreeHugger: +1 on the plastic. So much lighter to move it between front and back lawns (note we have 4 steps between shed and front lawn tho)

            • +3

@justtoreply: I was pleasantly surprised by the plastic and can't imagine going back now. I think the steel deck is really only to capture the market of people who absolutely insist on it.

        • Plus steel vs plastic…only the one steel deck model though, right?

Yep, and I have no idea why you would go steel. The Poly decks are tough as hell, lighter my a huge amount and won't rust.

See this from Oz Tool Talk re Poly vs Steel, go to 7:31 if this doesn't auto take you there - https://youtu.be/vYposI3_3rI?t=451

        • Thanks for all the feedback on that. I wasn’t sure which I should go for when the funding is eventually approved. Have an alloy deck Rover Craftsman at the moment, bought new about 25 years ago…eventually would like to go battery, but it keeps on kicking despite the abuse. It handled some pretty nasty ground over the years.

      • Wonder how big jv's favourite deck size is?

    • Select cut

    • Yes the USA is 2 generations (or models at least) ahead of us. I recently spoke to EGO Australia about this and they have no intention of bringing those out. Instead we're getting the old stock other countries couldn't sell. Pretty disappointed.

      • Can we import them ?

        • I actually looked into that too but the cost is horrendous, the main vendors in USA don't natively ship to Australia so a freight forwarding service is required. I can't remember the price exactly but I think it was in the ballpark of $500 USD. But I don't have too much experience with that side of things so maybe someone here knows of a cheaper way to get one out here.

          • @Click_It:

maybe someone here knows of a cheaper way to get one out here.

Maybe some of us could get together and arrange for an EGO mule to bring them over on a flight.

            • @jv: OzBargain group buy, let's do it!

The newest model some benefits, more height adjustment (handy for those wanting lower cuts), bigger battery (12.5Ah) and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head. I think they did something different with the blades for a better cut too and some ergonomics of operation. I made the suggestion to EGO Australia that if they won't give us what the rest of the world gets, at least discount the old stock we're stuck with. I never got a reply after that 🤔

              • @Click_It:

                and a few others I can't remember

probably much cheaper price selling in the US as well.

                • +1

@jv: I've just checked my old notes.

We have the "2020 EGO Select Cut Touch Drive" mower in Australia.

                  USA got:

2021 EGO Select Cut XP Touch Drive (10Ah)
2023 EGO Select Cut XP Speed IQ (12Ah)
They also get a better charger from memory over the 2020 model.

                  $999 USD

The differences start to stack up when you consider that includes the big 12Ah battery which we can't even buy here, but going by our prices, would cost more than a mower here. So as I implied to EGO Australia, I'm pretty sure they're just dumping all the old stock on us and keeping the larger markets updated. It'll be 2030 before we get the 2023 here.

  • Also note that the new power head has released overseas (pH1420), not 100% sure when it will come to AUS but something to keep in mind

  • +1

Not as good as it use to be. You use to get the free battery if you spent over $899 if I remember correctly.

    • Yes…I'm sure the deals were better last time weren't they?

    • +1

Used to be $800 for the 2.5ah. Spending like $1100 and only getting the Nexus is pretty bad, this item has been down to $100 on amazon recently.

      • +2

It is also not safe to use with most sensitive electronics as it outputs a square wave instead of a sine wave.

        • as it outputs a square wave

          😲

          The mower or the charger?

Wow this is just them having a laugh now. Except it's not funny.

  • Tight arses you used to get a 2.5ah battery for spending $800

  • Are their line trimmers worth getting over Makita or ryobi ones? I’m not in any ecosystems yet

    • Just get a petrol one.

      • Why do you prefer petrol over battery?

        • +2

          smells better

    • +1

I had a Ryobi petrol trimmer once. It went back to the store after the first attempted use and I picked up a Kawasaki, which I used for the next couple of decades. Lovely machine - I'd never used a petrol powered outdoor tool as smooth as that, and it punched well above its weight for the 23cc displacement.

Moved to the Ego gear when the Kawasaki started giving me problems (my own fault I'm sure). I can't speak for the electric Ryobi or Makita gear, but the Ego - on balance - is as good an experience as using the Kawasaki was.

      • Which Ego trimmer?

I'm currently using a Stihl, which is great except the 2mm line keeps breaking too easily.

        • That is most likely not the Stihls fault, either you have crappy line, or you are using it wrong, eg having it at high speed when cutting against hard objects.

          • @snuke:

            you have crappy line

I mainly use the Stihl branded line, but have tried others. The Stihl one is the best, but still not good enough.

            • +1

@jv: These are the two I use, based on the Project Farm YouTube channel testing video, they came out on top:

              https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B00NADMK0M

              https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B003VPWHL6

It's always too long between using it for me to have a favourite, but the misses prefers the Weed Warrior, and feels the sharper edges cuts better.

              • +1

                @snuke: they're 2.4mm lines. @jv says above that his machine uses 2mm.

                • @CacheHunter: To be clear, he says he is using 2mm line, not that his machine needs to use it.
2mm is quite light, so ideal for lower power machines, as in 2mm should never be used on petrol units, and I would expect my EGO to destroy it too. So maybe that is the issue here.

                  • @snuke: I only commented because I'm in the market for a new trimmer. I thought that i'd read that electric trimmers take 2mm line because it's lighter and petrol uses 2.4. I'm going to have to go back and check the specs now as it looks like I'm wrong. I also hadn't realized that some trimmers could use either width.

                    • @CacheHunter: That probably as the case at some points, but cordless units have become more and more powerful. Mine has a spec for 2.4mm. You will see EGO has both 2mm and 2.4mm lines (preloaded heads) in their range.

We don't actually know if JVs Stihl is a petrol or cordless battery unit, even within context it's not clear. All we know is that the brand of trimmer and line is Stihl, but he didn't provide specifics on either.

The same goes for the cutting blades for brush cutting, some are listed as ok to use it, others not. Although EGO contradict themselves in the wording here and they need to update the compatibility list. My specific unit is listed as a Brush Cutter/Line Trimmer - https://egopowerplus.com.au/power-30cm-brushcutter-38cm-line…

        • +1

No idea which model mine is, don't seem to have the order details anymore…probably on the trimmer somewhere, but can't be stuffed checking.

I did buy it before my backpack blower though, and that was early 2018, so I've been using it at least 5 years. Probably not a current model then.

I've used various line types with my trimmer, but recently came back to the Ego twisted stuff (~2.5mm), which I've found seems to last twice as long as all the other stuff I've tried. I was going through a few meters every time I did the yard (about 800m2 with a few garden and path borders, some of those rough stone) - pretty much having to rewind the spool after one and a bit times around the yard. Now it seems I can make three with the Ego stuff, and I feel like it cuts a little better too.

The one thing I kind of wish manufacturers offered with this battery powered gear was chargers that could be set to bring batteries to 'storage' charge. With these lithium chemistries, I think it's better to leave the batteries discharged as low as 50%, charging them to 100% just before use so they're not sitting in that 80-100% range for very long. The chargers offer no automated way of bringing batteries to this state, and the indicators don't often give a terribly accurate impression of charge capacity. I just try to discharge my batteries a bit so they're not spending a few weeks at full charge in the colder months.

EGO batteries automatically take themselves down to 30% if not used for a month.

            From the manual:

"WHEN TO CHARGE THE BATTERY PACK NOTICE: Lithium-Ion battery packs are shipped partially charged. Before using it the first time, fully charge the battery pack.

NOTICE: This battery pack is equipped with an advanced self-maintenance function to extend the battery life. Depending on the battery charge, it will automatically perform a self-discharge operation after one month of storage. After this self-maintenance, the battery pack will enter sleep mode and maintain 30% of its charge capacity. If stored for a month or longer, fully recharge the battery before the next use.

It is not necessary to run down the battery pack charge before recharging. The Lithium-Ion battery can be charged at any time and will not develop a “memory” when charged after only a partial discharge. Use the power indicator to determine when the battery pack needs to be recharged."

What is the spool line actually made of ? I'm guessing it's like a vinyl or PVC plastic that doesn't degrade - have you now got masses of tiny plastic pieces all over your yard ?

            • @Nom: I expect it results in small pieces of plastic being sprayed about, yes.

              • @Banj0: I've never actually seen any pieces in my yard - but I've probably gone through a few reels over the years. It's an interesting thought !

                • @Nom: Only piece I ever see is the last little bit of the empty spool when it flies out. I guess the rest must abrade to dust or fine pieces…unless it burns!

    • Look at what else you may want. EGO are basically the best when it comes to OPE overall, but if you want other power equipment, for drills etc… then it may be worth looking at another brands.
Personally I am on DeWalt for power tools, and EGO for all OPE. Happy with the choice.

I have a Japanese 4 stroke brush cutter (Subaru engine), and since getting my EGO one, I never use it as the EGO is just too good. This is a commercial end brush cutter, not a line trimmer. So I use both cutting line for edges and grass etc, and blade for brush.

  • Good timing on this as was about to buy a the Multi Tool Power Head and a couple of attachments. Would be good to grab the second battery (although a bit annoying I hear you used to get that with $800 spend instead of $1200).

Will 2 x 2.5Ah batteries handle most garden maintenance tasks? i.e. trimming, edging, hedging and blowing

    • Battery needs will vary person to person.
Personally I only have 5Ah and above, 2.5Ah would be near enough useless for me. While nicer in that they are lighter, I just wouldn't get the run time.
I have the LB5804E blower, and I will go through a 5Ah battery in about 15mins with liberal (near 100%) use of the Turbo mode. If your place is smaller, and you're not going to be a nutter with all turbo then 2.5Ah may be perfect.
As for Brush cutter, mower and chainsaw, again, I need the longer run times as I am on acreage.

      • Thanks for the feedback. So front and back i could do my edging and trimming in about 15-20 minutes. Likewise, blower useage would be like 5 minutes at most (if that).

    • I ran my blower, hedger, whipper snipper on 2 x 2.5Ah batteries fine for many years (but this was on an average residential block) - just depends how much of this work you will be doing. 5Ah batteries are always going to be better though.

I am also in the market for a multi tool, but only want the hedging and chain saw attachments. Found any good deals?

      • Cheers. Was that 2 x 2.5Ah EGO batteries as well? Or a different brand? I'm on a 700sqm block so i can get most edging, trimming, etc done in less than 20 minutes.

Not seen any deals that combo the hedger and chainsaw attachments (besides the mega pack that includes nearly everything).

  • Lol this is worst that Dec 2022, ie only 5 mths ago.

Where u spent over 999 u get the 2.6ah battery

    Now is 1200.

    • Probably in line with what "real inflation" is. Sadly…

  • I wonder if they are going to discontinue their 'bundled offers' when this offer commences?

    Have they in the past?

    • +1

Not that I have found - these are promo packs which are stocked at the store and pre packed with the bonus. If you can find them in store they count toward the spend.

      • Will wait to compare to the new Ryobi mower that's being released in a week or so…

  • Does anyone know when the Select Cut XP range will be available in Australia? (more powerful motor / higher torque) , eg. LM2156SP
It's been out in the US for over 2years now and still hasn't made our shores

    • I suggest you read prior comments, your question has already been answered.

  • Anyone know if there will be better deals on Ego gear as we approach the end of the financial year?

    • Based on prior years, there won't be.
