[PC, PS5, PS4, XB1, XSX] Diablo IV Open Beta Server Slam (May 12 - 14) - Free @ Blizzard

1710

Hey everyone! Everyone thought all beta testing ended in March, and we were sure that was it. How wrong we were! Just now, Blizzard announced a Server Slam, which is basically another, and this time surely the final, open beta of Diablo 4, to be held between May 12 and 14, 2023.
You can check their Twitt

Diablo 4 Server Slam content
You might be familiar with the general content if you participated in the Early Access and/or Open Beta Weekends. Most of it remains the same, meaning that players can play through the Prologue and all of Act 1 as a Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue, or Sorcerer. However, the level cap has changed, and players can only level their characters up to level 20. Fighting Ashava, a gigantic demon boss, will prove to be more challenging than before.

Another notable change is the drop rate of Legendary Items. According to Blizzard, it's going to reflect the drop rate that will be featured in the game's launch version.

There are also a huge lot of minor improvements, as the Server Slam will include all of the changes that have been made based on player feedback from previous testing. If you are interested, you can read about them here.

Diablo 4 Server Slam rewards

Even if you did participate in a test before, it might be worth your while to play again. The reason is simple: there is a new earnable reward waiting for players! If you're playing for the first time, you'll be able to earn rewards that have been available on previous Beta Weekends. Here is the complete list of Diablo 4 Beta Rewards, all of which you are going to be granted to you when the game launches:

Initial Casualty Title: earned by reaching Kyovashad with one character.
Early Voyager Title: earned by reaching Level 20 on one character.
Beta Wolf Pack Cosmetic Item: earned by reaching Level 20 on one character.
Cry of Ashava Mount Trophy: earned by defeating Ashava with one Level 20 character.
People who have already earned one of these items don't need to earn them again.

Diablo 4 Server Slam preload
Fortunately, everyone will have a chance to get their files ready before the event begins. The Diablo 4 Beta download start at noon PDT on May 10th.

Be sure to download the Battle.net client beforehand if you are new to the test. In the Diablo IV section of the All Games page of the Launcher, you'll need to change your game version to Server Slam. When the time comes, a blue "Install" button will appear. Pressing it will start your Server Slam Early Download.

Nice. Time to try out a character i didnt in the other betas

  • +2

Plenty of time ahead for people to manage their schedules. Specially for people that missed out on the previous Open Beta.

  • +20

Loved the beta, less love for the price point on PC however

    • +1

In the same boat. Didn't get to try it on the PS5 last time so this is great for me. $30 is a big difference so it's worth a shot.

    • +19

Completely agree. $110 for a standard edition PC game is a bit outrageous.

      • +1

        Absolutely is.

      • +12

It is but then divided by the 10,000 hours I'll play it looks cheap entertainment still…

        • +2

^^ This really. I get it seems like a lot, but the amount of played time you're going to get out of D4 over the next 5 years or so, it's probably worth it.

        • +4

I just hope they haven't found a way to microtransaction the shit out of the game.
I didn't look into any of that last beta.

        • That's a good way to look at it

        • +3

Said same thing for Diablo 3, let's see what the end game entails before assuming 10k hours

      • +8

I spend more than that in a decent night on the piss. $110 isn't that bad considering how much effort goes into creating games like this, that I will enjoy for endless amounts of hours.

        • +3

          Not a great comparison

        • +5

True that, especially in the Melb CBD. D4 is probably better for my health too.

      • +3

        I pre-ordered Diablo 3 for $40.76 back in 2012.

      • I guess if you take into account the need for PS+ sub to play online on PS5 is sort of balances itself out

    • +6

I give it a month, 6 weeks tops before it's 25% off on PC.

      • +2

        I would agree with that

      • +3

Activision Blizzard doesn't normally discount that soon. I'd be very surprised.

    • +1

Yep, it sucks ass to be a pc gamer nowadays. You can't even use VPN to get a cheaper price on battle.net anymore since they removed regional pricing. Whereas I was able to order it for ~$70 on PS5 via amazon (after discounts) and I have the option of reselling it if I want to.

      • +17

There's always Diablo Immortal. Don't you guys have mobile phones?

      • I read that they have cross save, so my plan is to buy PS5 then sell it and move to PC when it's on sale (playing on the couch + TV either way so I won't miss the mouse control)

        • Lol yes that's my exact plan. Could be a while but I wouldn't mind it so much since I'm still playing.

        • So should I buy a PS5 and then play it on that? Save me $30 than if I were to get it on PC

    • I think the main reason is that we are the same region on PC as US, while I believe PS and XBOX will be on their own ecosystems.

At price release I did some searching, to get a feel of response to pricing and found some complaints in the US about prices being higher for consoles there. $110 is still a lot but I'm happy it seems like its from their global business plan for blizzard, rather than an Australia Tax for once.

I don't know what the next big blizzard release is after this (unless WoW releases a chocolate edition) but I assume a lot is riding on the success of D4.

  • Hell awaits!

    • +9

Of course it does, it's Activision Blizzard so it's par for the course

  • +13

I'm ready for a journey down the carpal tunnel

  • +1

    BYO RTX3080Ti?

  • +2

    Error 37

  • +2

Got all characters to 25 last time… Might just focus on a couple this time. Who am I kidding..

    • +4

      Thats wild.
I got one to 25 and called it a day.
I respect your ability to grind multiple.

      • Bit of an addict lol

I just did the dungeons and did the story after, felt like it sped things up, if that's your thing.

        • ah okay. I did story and then dungeons.

          • +1

@ihuntbargains: They scale, so it also saves you time on back tracking, if you're wanting to do them all or for aspects.

There's also a level 35 dude on the left side of the map. If you can kill him, he drops high level 1handed maces (and some other stuff, but not as high), that can be enchanted via the NPC, it removes the level requirement (but keeps the high damage), so can be pretty useful for some classes. They may patch that out tho.

  • +1

Hodl-ing for a discount on PC

    • +4

hodl-ing a free beta with beta exclusive items?

    • Hodl-ing for Game pass release when activision deal gets approved.

  • -2

Check out memory usage, better not HODL-ing for 4090 price drop…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0grsVnZTVNk&t=90s

    • Eh never had issue with my 3080 that only have 10gb vram. Was running 1440p without any issues.

    • Could be memory leak issues. We know about the issue on system RAM. I noticed it was using 20GB+ ram when I was playing the beta, but perhaps there's also an issue with the VRAM. When I was running the beta at 1440p, the VRAM was maxed out at 10GB on my 3080 but I didn't run into any issues.

    • Maybe just a 4k issue? I played through the betas on a legion pro laptop with a 3070, no issues at 1440p fps capped to 90 with high settings..

My actual specs and experience during beta.

Haven't tested it since all the graphics drivers had updates but hopefully performing better.

    • I played the open beta with my 3070ti on 4K resolution. No issue so far. Level 20 now

  • I quite enjoyed the previous beta.

  • So the new reward is a mount trophy, am I reading that right? Think I'll pass on trying that then…

    • Nice. Less traffic for us.

    • +1

Its a chance to get the 2 from last Beta if you missed out, but a lot is getting a feel for the characters and game, and stress test the servers.

From the email I got about the 2nd beta:
"All this and more awaits in a brand-new build where we’ve integrated learnings and player feedback from the recent Diablo IV Open Beta, including adjustments that will make the Server Slam more representative of what players will experience at Launch."

Last beta I got some rubber banding when I got server shifted/sharded from moving between regions and game disconnects when portaling to teammates. Hopefully that's been fixed this time. The more people who test the better servers should be on launch.

Overall I was pretty happy with the server performance and moved my position from "Definitely not at $110 to "I'm weak and will reconsider if I want something to play in June".

For those purchasing D4 on PC, is there anyway to bypass Blizzard's international transaction fee, apart from using a credit card that doesn't charge such a fee? I noticed in similar situations for other companies, one may bypass it by using PayPal but in my search so far, Blizzard will still charge the fee via PayPal.

    • Is there even a region where they haven't jacked up the price to ~110AUD anyway?

I remember checking the usual regions for Blizzard price dodging and they were still roughly the same price. (Argentina, Taiwan, etc.)

      • Sorry, I was talking about the international transaction fee and not about regional pricing. It seems that Blizzard process their payment in France even though they charge you in AUD.

        • +2

Wouldn't it be your bank that is charging you an additional fee for processing an international transaction? Solution is to switch to bank that doesn't charge, like macquarie bank

      • Isn’t Argentina only around aud80 for the base game? Not sure if its simple to hook on VPN to switch region or not

  • Time to not waste my time on Druid again

    • +1

      17 damsge

    • +2

did they not buff Druid after last test? come on, try it once more for the love :P

      • I don’t think I can push through that early gameplay slog again on a beta.
I didn’t get to max but didn’t find it super enjoyable and struggled with the spider dungeon boss

      • Without being able to complete their class quest at 15, it's an entirely gimped version of the class, at least that is what I have been told.

  • -3

I wonder if people will actually buy this when it's fully released instead of boycotting this awful company

  • +4

I played the beta with a 1080 graphics card @ 2560*1440 but I do have 32Gb ram and didn't have any issues with the gameplay in any of the betas apart from staying up late at night and going to work the next day….

  • +1

So if you complete it, you get just a trophy? Not an actual mount (I'm presuming a horse)?

    • Yeah, looks to be just an item that goes on your mount. Not as appealing as a mount. But I'll probably still do it.

  • Managed to make a necro blood mist+corpse explosion build last open beta. Was fun exploding everything. Wonder if that was nerfed

    • +1

Corpse explosion was nerfed, yeah… Stop wondering and read about all the gameplay and class balancing changes following the beta test in about a million articles online, or on Blizzard's own site believe it or not.

  • Am I understanding it correctly that I need to download a new beta client and I can't use the one I already downloaded? Can I continue with my beta character (I didn't get to level 20) or will I have to start over?

    • +2

You probably just need to update the game you originally installed via the BattleNet client. Even if you played last time you start over again this time and again for real when the game comes out.

  • -1

they're trying to stick it to zelda tears of the kingdom…

  • It's not an open beta, since the game has already gone gold. Beta is the wrong term to use.

    • +2

Beta relates to a version numbering system relating to the state of development. The list of changes from last Open Beta would suggest they are Betas.

Even if the main game code is done and they are just tweaking balance, that's the point of open beta rather than Alpha or closed betas. These also would be stress testing the servers being set up for D4 as well in a way is very hard to otherwise simulate accurately. To be honest, seems close to the gold standard of a what an Open Beta should be.

What are your thoughts as to why its not an Open Beta? Just the sales volume? Do you think the game is actually mature enough that its a full version 1.0 situation and would be better described as a demo/ sever stress test?

  • +1

Lol why would you put yourself through this

    • Is it a waste of time? Too many people competing for servers etc, long wait times? Haven't done a free beta in a long while.

      • I dunno it might be alright. Unless it's like a normal Diablo launch which is always a fail

      • not at all. zero queueing, no lag since the start of this beta. PC performance is incredible

  • So servers go live tonight? Can we start preloading now? At work till late….

    • +2

I have just pre-installed on PC. Think it goes live at 5am Sat.

      • +1

Ah yeh right it's the 12th in US, will have time to download it overnight :) Cheers

  • Are there any aussie D4 communities out there? looking to join something for some games… there's the official discord but it's not Aussie specific (mainly to suit timezones)

  • Been playing since 6am this morning, game is great and looks and runs fantastic on Series X. There was no login queues at all and there has been no lag or server issues at all, has essentially run flawlessly the last 4+ hours.

  • is the game multiplayer/coop?

    • Yes.

      • how does the game compare to path of exile?

  • -4

It'll take hours to connect and you'll disconnect within minutes. It happens every time with Blizzard betas.

    • Been playing for nearly 6 hours this morning, accross 4 gaming sessions, login queues have been non existent, game runs rock solid on my Series X, not a single issue encountered.
So no, it doesnt happen every time with Blizzard betas.

      • Well looks like I was wrong. Past performance was not indicative of future results.

  • Do you need ps+ to play on ps5?

    • You don't for Overwatch which is also an online Blizzard game.

      • Overwatch is free game now. Free game doesn’t need subscription to play online but the paid game needs.

        • What about free weekends/free betas?

  • don't I need an RTX 4000 card to play this?

    • +1

No. I played the Open Beta with a GTX 1080 Ti, it runs great. More important you have a decent CPU, enough system ram and an SSD.

      • wow thanks

  • -3

I've logged in twice this morning with no server queues or DCs, no stuttering.

    I'm actually concerned and skeptical.

Is it performing better because they fixed things? Nah, probably not.
Is it performing better because they've allocated heaps of extra resources for this weekend and it's functioning fine.
Will it be a shit show in 2 weeks time when people play the real game?
Is it performing better because they're struggling to sell copies?

    • Bit of a weird angle you are taking here. The intial open beta would have had considerably more player numbers and server strain than this "server slam" weekend. And of course the actual launch of the game itself will certainly have more players than this server slam also.
