PNY CS2241 4TB NVMe Gen4x4 M.2 SSD $299 (Was $399) + Delivery ($0 SYD C&C) @ JW Computers

910

First time poster so go easy with anything that could be missing in the post.

I have been looking to buy a 4TB NVME drive for a while as running low on available NVME m2 slots on RAID setup.

This seem like a decent drive with 5 year warranty but couldn’t find TBW numbers.

May work with a PS5 as well given it is Gen 4 and speeds are close enough.

Sequential Read of up to 5,100 MB/s and Write of up to 4,200 MB/s.

TBW 640. Good enough for this type of drive - that is roughly equivalent to 200gb per day for 10 years.

Even better then - most of us don't need anything higher than 900 TBW

        • 900TBW for 4TB just means it is a QLC drive. That is how they are driving the price down.

      • +2

Thank you! The website I looked at had the 2tb and 4tb very close together I have mixed this up with the 2TB.

Even better for those who purchase.

  • Great find, best 4TB deal I've seen in a while

  • It's dreamless and without heatsink.
And need sequential read speed 5,500mb/s or faster for PS5.

    • +11

Well again so many time, it still works for PS5 nonetheless

    • +13

Tough crowd. 93% of the required speed for 70% of the cost

    • +2

need ≠ required. Also PS5 internal SSD is dramless too

    • +1

would it be sufficient to put 4 of these in an overkill RAID 5 NAS setup

      asking for a friend…

      • +8

Friends don't let friends use RAID5.

        • +2

raid 0 4 of these bad boys it is

    • +7

As Martin Luther King once said, "I have a DRAM"

    • +5

      It's dreamless

Just don't let it go to sleep, then.

    • It has HMB so it should be fine DRAMless.

  • +2

I think it's good for sub ssd not a main.
I'm planning to buy samsung 990 pro 2tb when it under $250, I'm not sure is it enough space or have to add sub ssd or hdd later.
Anyway, it's good price for 4tb.

    • +4

Just curious, is there a reason you are holding out for the 990 as opposed to just getting the 980 which was $216 on Amazon a few days ago (unless maybe you didn't like the Little Seekers book). Is ther emuch difference between the 2 to make the wait worth while?

      • +1

I know that 990 pro not worth it current price. Just 980 pro is not on my mind.

I already set up my desktop build. And each item I did set proper price that I think.
I'm collecting one by one when it touch the line.
I have enough time till Diablo4 launched.

        • They did have the KC3000 on sale, dont like it?

P.S Super excited for D4. Personal leave (planned matters) locked in!

Should be compatible with ESXi as well, for datastore.

Interesting if it uses QLC for 4TB as well. I'd expect so, it would be strange to use TLC for 1TB and 4TB and QLC only for 2TB.

      • This price… better to assume QLC.

  • +1

Prices have been dropping and i love it

Why can't I stop myself buying these blasted things?

    • great sheet. should they add TBW and the warranty, 2 main aspects

    $50 waiting room

  • By the end of 2023 I expect 4TB drives will be at the price point 2TB drives were at the beginning of the year. Hell, they almost are already. If this had dram it would be it.

    • +5

The market is currently flooded with cheap chips due to an oversupply. That said, supply has been cut so I expect prices to rise again once the flood has cleared.

  • Welp I just paid about $230 for 2TB which used up my last M2 slot, though with slightly higher speeds which is important for my needs.

    This is an amazing price.

  • +2

Wasn't this deal unpublished several times?

  • Damn tempting, holding out for a solid amazon deal so I can burn some gift cards.

  • Does this have DRAM?

    • +4

      Scroll up dude

Lovely find - Grabbed one to make a 4TB NVME external drive using the Ugreen Nvme case.

ChatGPT posted this yesterday but removed for insufficient quantity?
ChatGPT also linked availability on eBay

    Cheap Gen 4 bulk storage
Good for PS5 (add heat sink) and game storage
For general workloads, the Team MP34 is a better option
Also available for $301.99 delivered on JW's eBay store(ebay.com.au) if you have Plus and the PLUSM $25 voucher

i'll also add some may prefer purchasing on eBay to help meet the $10/$25/$50 Voucher for Eligible Members After Nominated Monthly Spend & $3 Bonus Cashback on a $30 Spend @ ShopBack

    • hey man quick question, why do you say this is better for general workloads?

      • +1

It has DRAM (MP34) which is beneficial for a lot of write applications (exporting photos, videos etc). If you are just gonna store games, media etc., you are mostly just reading of the SSD so this will be fine.

        • but the drawback is MP34 DRAM is quite small, I think 128MB or similar? and speeds are much lower than PNY CS2241 though PNY has no DRAM.

      • +2

quoted ChatGPT initial post but from what i can see PNY CS2241 supports HMB which uses system memory instead which offers a comparable experience

Some NVMe controllers can also use system memory (RAM) as an external DRAM cache using a method known as host memory buffer (HMB). This requires OS/driver support. Host memory lookup has performance overheads. Generally HMB is in the 30-40MB range with a default Windows cap around 100MB. Accessing HMB is significantly slower than utilizing the controller's SRAM but still way faster than going to NAND.

        source

The results were quite intriguing. When as little as 16MB of host RAM was allocated as HMB,
the results showed that there was almost no impact on user experience. Specifically, for all
workloads tested, 95% of all activities experienced no loss of performance. Additionally, 98% of
most typical use cases such as installing software, copying files/folders, and general
productivity for office users had no performance degradation whatsoever.

        source

difference between an SSD with and without DRAM will be that the drive with DRAM will do burst writes much faster than the DRAMless. But since most people don't need extremely fast burst writes on their drives, I'd say that it doesn't matter for most people. And as you mentioned, DRAMless drives can use SLC caches and HMB to help with these bursts

        source

DRAM helps an SSD to operate at its peak performance by storing a record of where data can be found on the SSD. DRAM decreases the latency and speed of any operation on the SSD. DRAM is used for this as it doesn’t suffer from any issues with frequent writing reducing the lifespan, and because it can provide the data location to the SSD controller much faster than the flash memory could. Another advantage to DRAM onboard an SSD is very similar to the ability to cache data too small to write to the flash memory straight away. It also works to cache data being shuffled around the SSD as part of the wear leveling process to write it more efficiently.

    I got free shipping?

Thanks. Bought. Too good to pass up. Was free shipping to Melbourne metro.

    • goodonya, now you need to make use of it before it drops

This is a great deal. Found the same price for MEL pickup here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/770561

Not sure why it is marked as Expired. I just bought one online and decided to pick up from Castle Hill centre instead of getting delivered.

    • I think someone legitimately reported it when it was $399 for half a day or so yesterday. I checked to verify and it was expired, but seem active now as you see.
