$15/Month Mobile Data Plan with 20GB 4G/5G Data at 100Mbps (Then Unlimited Data at 1Mbps) @ Belong

1810

Credit to this comment if you want telstra 5G network.

Having tried optus capped speed at 1Mbps and been able to watch netflix/Stan etc without any issues for 1 person, this is a good deal for 1 person to use (i.e. student, grandma, etc) if you are on a tight budget and cant afford to pay for Nbn etc.

Only downside is unused data is not carry forward!

    • +7

Bonus upside, you won't have to answer the phone.

    • I thought it does?

      • +4

This is Data Only, the 'phone' plans allow data banking (but aren't as generous with data)

        • Better is dodo $10 2gb and calls/text the. 1mbs unlimited.

          • @srhardy: Only if you think 0 customer support is going to be worth your time if there's any problem…

          • @srhardy: No MMS still?

What is the real world speed 430 to 730pm ?

    • You could always gift your data to a friend/spouse and then they could gift it back and vice-versa

    • +1

You can gift your data to your mobile account if you have one or to your friend.

    • Gift your unused data of your data plan to other Belong data plan account or other Belong voice plan account and those data will stay with the new account until the data expires.

Let's say there are data plan 1 (data expires on 30/4/2023), data plan 2 (data expires on 15/5/2023) and voice plan (data never expires)
Gift your remaining data of data plan 1 to data plan 2 before 30/4/2023, those data will be alive until 15/5/2023.
Gift your remaining data of data plan 1 to voice plan 2 before 30/4/2023, those data will be alive forever.

    • Yeah I don't get it either… Don't they have a $15 phone plan you can switch to after activating your first phone SIM? If so you'd get calls, texts, data, AND data banking for the same $15/m.

      • +2

$19/m is the cheapest phone plan.

        • Thanks. Is that the $15 one but it increased in price? (I thought they had the plan I described, but they don't advertise it, so many people are unaware of it.)

          • +2

            @[Deactivated]: $15 got canned 2 months ago. It's now the $19 plan.

            • @hek666: NO!!! I was thinking of switching to that.

              • @[Deactivated]: Optus network NVMo but Better is dodo $10 2gb and calls/text the. 1mbs unlimited.

            • +1

@hek666: What? For new customers I presume? Seems only recently our $10 plans were increased to $15…

              • +2

@kiitos: My 2 existing $15 accounts got migrated to $19 this month

              • @kiitos: Yep my $10 got migrated to $15 which got migrated to $19 this month. Will probably go back to SIM slutting or switch over to Woolies once all my credit is done. $228/year is a bit much

        • I'm on a $12.50/m plan, 6gb.

          • +1

@Abbi: A few moments months later

Forum post: Belong cancelled my 6GB/$12.50 plan and migrated me to the $19 plan, what should i do?

            • @easternculture: Optus but Better is dodo $10 2gb and calls/text then 1mbs unlimited!

            • @easternculture: I was previously on a 2gb $9.50/m plan that got migrated to a $12.50/m plan.

        • +1

$25 is their cheapest plan "for sale" for new plans .

The $10 became $15, which is now $19 .. .But is only for existing people on that plan

    • +1

On the downside as well, thier mobile plans keep going up and up.
The basic mobile plan started at $10 with 1GB data and was a winner with those not requiring much data but with good coverage.
Then they bumped it up to $15 with 3GB data which was of no use if 1GB suited your needs
Now the same plan is $19
So how long will this plan stay at $15????

  • +12

Will be $20 in half a years time. They'll also tell you take it or leave it.

  • +16

if you are on a tight budget and cant afford to pay for Nbn etc.

if the person is on tight budget, is cutting off netflix / stan to be the first thing to do?

  • +3

    optus capped speed at 1Mbps

Actually both Optus and Telstra are capped at 1.5 MBPS

On Vodafone some plans are 2 MBPS or lower ones 1.5 MBPS

Optus occasionally has 500gb data plans at $65 on special

There are others that use Optus, Telstra and Vodafone thst even have better deals

Sometimes plans with calls and data are better then pure data plans especially when there are special deals happening

Edit: don't forget with the 3x big telcos they offer data share between different plans either call/data plans and pure data plans as long as they are post paid plans

And family plans is another plan thats useful I think Aldi has the best family plan, yes one person using a family plan, data is shared I think over 4 simcards/numbers, so what one for ones main phone number, another for data at home, third a number could be number were you don't want to use your main private number, or one in the car for media players/alarm system/dash cam etc and etc

  • Does belong offer voicemail yet?

Used their mobile service years ago when they threw in a free $80 starter pack with an NBN connection, was baffling they didn't have this basic feature then…

    • +2

Yes exactly same as Telstras, well Beling is owned by Telstra, well now officially owned by Telstra and few months back voicemail etc are now as Telstras services

    • Belong offers voicemail now

    • Does belong offer voicemail yet?

      On their data plans?

      I don’t think so.

  • +1

This uses the Telstra wholesale network - not the full Telstra network.
    https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/Guides/Telstra-ne…

    • -4

Yes but they still own them, obviously it cant be exact same service as there own main services while there charging a bucket load more for there main services, just did speedtest with Belong managed 113 MBPS while i know my Telstra call/data sims I use for data in a Telstra 5G modem can achieve above 600 MBPS, both services are 5G

Edit: my call/data sims are actually jbhifi/telstra call/data plans

      • You can use Boost to get the full Telstra network for almost this price with less data.

140 gb for $200 150Mbps speed on Boost
(Vs 240gb for $180 100Mbps on this Belong plan)

or $696 for 480gb at 250Mbps for the cheapest Telstra plan

        • +4

$200 is soon to become $230

        • +2

The Boost plans are voice included, while this Belong plan is data only?

    • +1

So your better off using Boost rather than Belong to access full Telstra network reception, am I correct?

  • Does belong support esim? Can't seem to find any info

    • +3

      They don’t.

  • -4

THIS NOT A DEAL. IT IS THE EXACT SAME PRICE BELONG HAS ALWAYS BEEN CHARGING FOR THAT PLAN.

    • +9

Something cheap that has never gone up in price despite inflationary pressures hiking basically everything up in price would be a deal?

Like for example due to the rate hikes you can no longer afford a new keyboard with a working caps lock key.

    • +1

Dunno bruv , 138 upvotes ia probably a good indicator that its a deal

  • +2

I had Telstra 5GB $15 data sim for 4 years before they emailed me they where upping the price to $25 (+67%) due to inflation.

Seeing that they can still offer a $15 plan for even more data shows how much bs that price increase was.

    • The Telstra plan had 512KBps faster shaping though so it isn't a completely fair comparison.

      • +1

Thats true, but with 20GB vs 5GB, I would choose that trade off if it was offered.

        • +1

I just did the maths. It would take 66.66 hours at that extra 512Kbps speed to make up for the 15GB difference. You're right, Telstra's price increase was bulltwang.

          • @Guybrush57: I often used 30GB per month, 5GB +25GB.

The last 10GB would be only 1/3rd slower, but overall the 30GB would be faster.

    • I had some $5 Telstra data sims. Sad I canceled them.

      • Don't be sorry. Telstra shitcanned all of them, even the $15 plans. No one was grandfathered in.

  • Is there any activation date?

    • Nope

  • +1

I assume Data Plan = only data access, no calling?

    Can someone please confirm?

    • +1

Yes but can receive smses, as used in verification process if porting a number over, yes no calls in or out

    • +1

      Click the link.

    • +1

      Yes

  • Any yearly plan available? Look for a SIM card for my child . $80-$100 range

    • +2

Belong is solely postpaid month to month plans

      • +1

Any other mobile providers have yearly plans ?

        • Oh when you say $89 to $100 you mean over 12 months not per month?, thought lucky kid at first

        • +1

          Woolworths, Boost, probably others.

        • +3

Woolworths Mobile have good yearly plans. Is on Telstra network and you get the 10% off shop each month (twice, once online and once in store).

          • @Ragzs: Am I correct that to get the two discounts, you have to shop online first?

            • @Guybrush57: I can't say for sure how it works but I did some testing today.

I used the code earlier this month for an online shop

Went to Woolies bought some stuff at the manned checkout using the Everyday Pay QR code scanned via the phone camera. This method sutopays. ID didn't get asked to use the 10%, either the system knew or the server forgot to ask.

Went back and bought an avocado and used the self service. Scanned the bar code instead of using the apps QR code scanner. This time the self service machine offered the 10%. Saved 25 cents lol.

A few variables to work through on the next attempt (next week when the code resets). I will find out if the QR code system is smarter than bar code (card).

            • @Guybrush57: From my experience yes. Once I shopped in store first and used the discount. When I tried online, discount didn’t work. So it could have been a fluke, but I always do online first now. You can check in your mobile app after using discount online that discount is still available. Once you use it in-store, it states that you have used the discount already.

          • @Ragzs: How do you get the 10 percent discount twice? Does it work twice with the Woolworths car insurance also?

    • colesmobile or amaysim or lebara.

      • How much data? Catchconnect or amaysim do 60gb plans at discounted cost. Catchconnect is currently $89 for the year. Amaysim had cashback no long ago that made it around $85.

  • +1

$15 month would make this $180 annually. At that price, what's the advantage of going boost?

    • +3

There is none if you are antisocial and never call or text.

    • +1

Unlimited 1mb/s data. You can watch unlimited SD YouTube, iView, SBS etc.

Also useful for an off-site NAS as you can backup photos and documents overnight with just a 4g service at the other end. It'll easily transfer 3-4gb overnight.

      • +1

Or your own ssd cloud storage for backing up files overnight

      • Sorry to correct. 1Mbps = 125kb/s. In theory, max download about 10GB per 24 hrs, but not possible at all time max speed.

        • +4

There are ways to bypass the capped speed.
Unfortunatly the more people that know, the likelyhood of patching the hacks increase.

  • I know this is Telstra network but is there any difference between belong and Boost? I’m currently on boost and it’s great, keen to get a feel for whether belong is exactly the same in terms of reception qualify etc.

  • Looked great until I read you can't SMS or make calls.
Essentially your phone plan is primarily for Internet, and you have a second phone for calls

    • Someone said in the comments above that you can recieve sms

      • Yeah you can do that on any phone, even without a plan.

        • Nice. I have a ton kogan sims assigned numbers for when they were free. Ill try using them to verify accounts for free jb hifi tenners

      • Me, there calls/plan same data of 20gb is $5 more at $25, there tightness plan is $19 calls/data at 5gb data, I'm sure

Edit: And these are postpaid call/data plans, if sim is stuck in a modem and then can't answer calls with that number, one can have their calls diverted to their main number (free) if one wants a spare number, like me I use my spare number for advertising stuff on Gumtree or FB marketplace

    • +3

      …hence 'data plan'

  • Anyone here uses mobile broadband router (like a USB one), or use another old phone as hotspot?

    • +2

I do, with 4g router. Daily running boost as replacement of nbn

      • +2

I have felix running in usb tether mode via asuswrt

      • Having never done this is it as simple as you just buy a ‘mobile router’ and plug in the sim?

        • +1

Mines vx420-g2h given out by TPG as part of the installation. I knew that there is 4g support so I tried 4g replacement as nbn is kinda cost more after I moved.

And turns out it worked extremely smooth for me for different carriers, which I tried Telstra and Optus network.

          • @solacens: What maximum speed you got? I wonder what's the 4g speed limit for this modem.

            • +1

@aiyoyo: It depends on the data plan you are using I think.

The fastest one I observed last night is like 900MB of game update in ~15s. So its ~60MB/s

              • @solacens: Which network you using?

                • +1

                  @aiyoyo: Boost @ Telstra

Signal strength should also be considered tho.
