This handheld game console was quite popular in a previous deal and now it's on sale from GeekBuying with free priority shipping. The design is inspired by the Gameboy with all the essential buttons like a dpad, vibration feedback, as well dual joysticks, triggers on the rear and a 3.5" IPS touchscreen. When it comes to gaming this can handle everything up to PS1 games really well, PSP games run pretty good with the stock firmware, while Dreamcast, Saturn and PS2 are more of a struggle.

For the operating system it runs Android 11 and can boot into Abernic's custom Linux OS on the microSD card. It supports custom firmware like JELOS that offers better game performance for some platforms. It has dual microSD card slots, two USB-C ports, HDMI out, 3.5mm audio jack, single speaker, WiFi ac 2.4G/5G, Bluetooth 4.2 and a 3200mAh battery offering up to 6 hours of playtime.

Retro Game Corps has an indepth video review and Retro Dodo a shorter review.

I have this, kind of - I have the RG353P which is the same internals but different layout - Horizontal over vertical.

Lots of people will tell you it can handle N64 well but I've tried everything - Various linux firmwares & the stock android, and haven't had close to smooth performance in most of the games people will be playing (MK64, Diddy Kong Racing, Perfect Dark, Conkers etc). Everything Ps1 and below runs pretty flawlessly.

If you're interested in getting a cheaper model that doesn't include the control sticks and lacks Wifi, the RG35XX is similar form factor and newer and can also handle up to PS1.

If you get this I strongly recommend using JelOS as the OP describes.

    • If you're interested in getting a cheaper model that doesn't include the control sticks and lacks Wifi, the RG35XX is similar form factor and newer and can also handle up to PS1.

Another alternative would be the Miyoo Mini Plus, which has Wi-Fi but lacks Video Output.

If you do get the Anbernic RG35XX, then I would recommend you install GarlicOS.

      • Agreed but I kept it Anbernic!

I have the Miyoo Mini Plus too :P

    • N64 seems to run ok on my RP3+,

Keen to add a RG35XX to it, waiting for a good deal

    • Yep RG35XX is a great budget unit up to PS1 (with Garlic OS) which joysticks aren't needed for.

  • +2

If you don't need the Android OS and the Joysticks, then I would recommend the Anbernic RG35XX or the Miyoo Mini Plus (will have to wait until the next drop).

I recently picked up the Miyoo Mini Plus and it has become one my favourite handheld retro console, especially once you upgrade to the OnionOS.

    • What consoles can you emulate with it, and how much did you pay? I was looking into running RetroPie in a case similar to these but got sidetracked - this looks simpler!

I suppose anywhere from NES/Gameboy -> PS1 would be good.

      • The Miyoo Mini Plus can emulate up to PS1. Paid ~A$110 from their official AliExpress store (you will have to wait for more stock, as they drop them in waves).

If you don't want to wait, then the Anbernic RG35XX is basically instock everywhere.

      • +1

Both will play exactly what you want ie NES/Gameboy -> PS1

There's a great set of roms out there if you upgrade the firmware if you search for "Miyoo Mini Tiny Best Set" (will work on both Miyoo and Anbernic)

  • +1

+1 on RG35XX (+ Garlic OS) larger than and cheaper than miyoo mini + with hdmi out

    or

Miyoo Mini+ (+ Onion OS) inbetween Miyoo Mini and RG35XX in size + wifi if you need that.

    • +1

The Wi-Fi on the Miyoo Mini Plus is convenient for OTA Updates and Achievements.

      • +2

Personally I like the RG35XX because it's not connected to wifi. Retro gameplay… and that's it. Just like it used to be.

Although the ultimate is RG35XX + Miyoo Mini Plus… + any other of the variants to your collection ;)

Although the ultimate is RG35XX + Miyoo Mini Plus… + any other of the variants to your collection ;)

Agreed, will probably add the RG35XX to my collection, if there's a deal posted…

@RichardL: prepare your wallet, Clear is on the case

  • Hey Clear, any chance of the code being applied to the other colours/card sizes? Seems to only work on the grey 64gb. Thanks muchly.

    • +2

      I will check.

      • Hey @Clear any chance you could sort it working for other colours. Really keen to buy a black one. Cheers

        • Sure I will see what they say tomorrow

          • @Clear: Any updates, will pull purchase if I could purchase the black one

            • @Ntang91: Not yet sorry. I expect an answer Monday.

              • @Clear: Any news. Still waiting to buy a black or white one.

@ThemDealsThough: Sorry for the late reply. The other colours are now included.

be warned that collecting handhelds becomes addictive

Just got my retroid pocket 3+ and now want to add more

    • I can confirm this. I'm about a dozen or so further down the rabbit hole.

    • I read this like 2 weeks ago, "I'm prff as if…. I now own 3 hand helds (retroid pocket 3+ is on the way too) and every usb in my house has a batocera image on it… Such a rabbit hole… and I LOVE IT!

      • pocket 3+ is great,

and now powkiddy x55 looks for under $90 USD looks like another great pickup

combined with gamepass deal and you have a versatile gaming system with a massive gaming library

  • @Clear can you get a deal for thr RG35XX?

  • Anything cheaper that can play gameboy and gba physical carts?

    • Ha! No.

Analogue pocket plays those carts, but it's definitely not cheaper.

You're better off with a device like this for GBA and GB/GBC anyway. I'd probably jump on the rg35xx train if I were you. I have a 351p which does them both well, too.

  • +3

This is the best I could get.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/771471

  • Any reason to upgrade from a 351v?

    • +1

Not to this, no. What are you after in an upgrade, that the 351v doesn't offer?

      • Cheers for that. I'm not after anything specific, overall happy with the 351. Just wanted to know if I was missing anything 😅

    • Save up for steamdeck or see upcoming Asus Ally

      • I've had a steam deck since launch, these little handhelds are a completely different device…

        • +1

Yeah but you already have a 351v,

But with these handhelds seems like you gotta have a collection

        • +1

You're pretty well covered between the Deck and the 351v mate. If you wanted something in between more portable than the Deck and more powerful than the 351v, a Retroid 3+ at roughly $250 odd would be what I'd consider

          • +1

@Orion au: Cheers mate, that's very helpful. I'll have a look into the Retroid, but will likely just stick with what I have for the moment.

            • +1

@Soapdroid: RG405M is a recent model from Anbernic as well which adds a metal body
Retroid Pocket Flip has just come out as well which is the clamshell version of the Pocket 3+

  • Grey only? No special on transparent black?

Does it include any games? Or need to "source" them separately?

    • +2

Check the r/roms github mega thread

  • Just realised there's the RG353M, very similar to RG353V but in horizontal layout. May be a better choice.

    • There's also the RG353P, if you'd prefer a cheaper (than the M) plastic, vertical, SNES controller style device

      • Horizontal or vertical better? I would imagine horizontal is a bit more ergonomic since the hands are further apart.

        • Sorry, I should have said the 353P was horizontal. My mistake!

          353V = vertical/plastic
          353P = horizontal/plastic
          353M = horizontal/metal

If I were to buy any of those, I'd get the P model. I'd agree horizontal is generally more ergonomic and I don't think the metal shell offers much more than increased cost (personal opinion of course)

          • +1

@Orion au: Thanks for listing down the differences, had a quick look on Google, not a friend of the P due to unnecessary bulk.

M being horizontal is more practical, while V looks cooler, especially with that translucent case.

Turns out there are also 405M and 505M, Android only, not sure it that matters.

I want to play lots of retro games from the arcade, NES and SNES.

            • @browser: Android opens up to more emulators and also game streaming apps

For arcade, NES & SNES stick to the non-Android models since it adds more cost

            • @browser: Yeah if you're sticking to those consoles, the 353 series is probably the way to go. The 405/505 are decent machines, but only if you're wanting more power, which you won't need for retro arcade, SNES and nes.

Sounds like the 353M has your name on it!

              • @Orion au: Thanks guys. Will look for a deal on 353M.

        • +1

Horizontal with joystick is better if you play a lot of shoot 'em ups (194x series) with screen rotated, buttons reassigned.

Vertical wins if you're into GB/GBC more.
