  • does anyone know what consoles this can emulate?

      • thats pretty cool

        • +4

You don’t know the answer do you…

        • +6

those not willing to pay for games

How do you figure? The games for most of these older consoles are not even on sale anymore.

          • -8

@kaleidoscope: Everything is always for sale

            • +2

@King Steuart: Unless the money from sale goes to the publisher and developer of the game, what difference does it make?

p.s. i don’t pirate games. The morality line i draw is, whether the original game is available for sale by the publisher somewhere.

              • -7

@kaleidoscope: Do you purchase cars and houses with that attitude or only when it suits

                • @King Steuart:

Do you purchase cars and houses with that attitude

I didn’t know you could pirate houses and automobiles. So teach me!

                  • -1

@kaleidoscope: You can 3d print anything these days and you can pirate those files but surprise surprise that wasn't the point I was making.

        • +3

          A) most people who buy one of these will have a current gen/last gen console that they purchase games for.
          B) not everyone is an avid retro game collector wanting to spend hundreds on old games.
          C) even collectors with originals play these emulator systems

      • +4

Hahahahahah - DAMN those downvotes came quickly :)

    • +12

      My RG351V can emulate well:

      • All 16 bit and older consoles (from Atari 2600 through to Megadrive and SNES)
      • Many MAME ROMs including games from the late 90s/early 00s (haven't tried many newer games or 3D games though, all 2D/sprite based games)
      • Many/most PSX games
      • Some N64 games
      • Some PSP games

I believe the RG353 is even more powerful, plus some Android emulators work better than their Linux counterparts (and vice versa)

    • +8

Check out Russ' video on this. Highly recommend this channel if you're into retro game emulation.

I have the previous model, the RG351V and it's brilliant, especially for the price.

For more info I highly recommend the following videos:

Seems like a pretty good buy. I have a Steam Deck on the way but if I didn't, I'd consider picking this up for the price.

    • I kinda want to buy a Steam Deck just to play F1 Manager

  • This looks pretty neat and I don't mind blowing $168 on a cool toy, but I have a modded 3DS XL that I think does the same thing.

Does this work out of the box? Like I just load my totally legal roms I ripped myself? Or do I have to install emulators and mess around with it before I can use it? Because it looks like the "free gift" 64gb card is preloaded with 4452 games.

How well does it run DC, PS1/PSP and N64 games?

Edit: just saw @kapone's reply, so it might ne a pass for me

    • Out of the box it has an OS already setup and a bunch of ROMs. But community based operating sytems or Android are better than the stock OS

      • +6

Yeah, I already used up all my "mess around with shit to get it working" time on the 3DS, and the 3DS can do N64

        • +2

Surprised how much the compatibility has expanded for the N64 emulator on 3DS.

I remember when it only just barely ran Mario 64, now the list is huge!

          • @mangobango: Well they did do ports (or emulation? I dunno) of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, so the hardware is certainly capable

            • +1

@rosebank: Those were ground-up remakes so different to emulation, but yeah they managed to get Xenoblade to run on New 3DS so anything is possible.

              • +2

@mangobango: Still amazed that they managed to do that tbh

                • @DeToxin: I had that same feeling when I played them on my 3DS, but if you think about it, it makes sense as the 3DS was released in 2011, 15 years after the N64 (1996).

The PSP is a 2004 device was able to play PS1 games natively and run its even better looking PSP games, that was 10 years after the PlayStation release (1994). When the software runs natively on the hardware you can really get a lot out of it, emulation (or interpreted) really does put a heavy load on the device.

                  • +1

@FabMan: My comment was regarding the Xenoblade port.
But the OoT and MM remakes also looked great.

                    • @DeToxin: Ahhh, yeah, that did look impressive for that device.

    • im in the same boat, i think this does more or less similar abit with less fiddly with the software, and if you dig the form factor better than a 3ds XL

      • I dig the retro GB form factor and the transparent purple throwback. But it'd basically be a $168 toy to play Mother 3

        • My RG351V gets used mostly to play GB Tetris, SMS Sonic (it's what I grew up with) and PSX THPS. Still totally worth it.

Also great if you've got kids and want them doing something other than YouTube on long car rides.

          • @kapone: I don't have kids, but ages ago, I gave my young cousin my modded NDS and OG PSP (that was expensive to mod, had to buy a special battery and pay a shitload for a 64gb memory stick) and the little shit doesn't even use them.

            • +1

@rosebank: Kids have the shortest attention span now. They don't have patience to start and continue to games lol

              • @Circly: What do you mean? Kids don't want to play FFT War of the Lions??

            • +2

@rosebank: Haha, that's like my kids. Built them a decent budget gaming rig for Christmas (Ryzen 5600, 16GB, GTX 908 Ti, 34 inch 1440 screen), and they're using it all right, but only for Roblox and Minecraft. I may as well given them a 5 year old laptop.

    • I haven't really looked into the RG353 devices in detail, don't want to be tempted to buy another device only a few months after I bought my RG351V.

I expect support for those consoles is better on the RG353, as it's a bit more powerful (plus having the option of Android emulators opens up things a bit too), but I wouldn't be expecting 100% performance or support for those consoles (maybe close to 100% for PS1) on a device at this price.

I've played a heap of PSX Tony Hawk on my RG351V with no problems, but struggled with the few PSP and N64 games I tried (which to be honest, were harder to emulate games). I didn't bother trying Dreamcast.

I'd suggest checking out the Retro Game Corps review before ruling it out though
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bG3yPF2hfM&t=458s

      • I don't think it's be able to do DC, I tried on the Wii U and couldn't get it working properly

        • According to this review it can do DC reasonably well, but you might need to enable frame skipping for some games
          https://main.retro-handhelds.com/blog/rh-reviews-the-anberni…

          • +1

            @kapone: Mostly Playable

            Sega Saturn
            Sega Dreamcast
            Sony PlayStation Portable

            Out of Reach

            Sony PlayStation 2
            Nintendo GameCube
            Nintendo Wii
            Nintendo 3DS

I'll wait for one that can do DC properly because I would love DC on the go.

If I wanted a "project" I'd rather grab a PSP Vita from my brother (who's a retro gaming nerd and maybe has over 10, I got my 3DS XL and Wii U off him) and mess around with that.

        • Crazy Taxi plays extremely well, so have the few other DC titles I've tried.

  • +1

Retroid Pocket 3+ would be a better buy.

    • +1

      Different price point though.

I think this is good for a vertical device under $200

    • -1

Even the RP3 was far, far above $200 though.

      • Pretty sure you can get the 3 for under $200. $119 USD with $15 postage direct from their website. That's not even above $200, nevermind far, far above.

  • to get to DC emulation or higher we need at least RP3 or better

  • +1

I got a Miyoo Mini last year. Cool little thing, the size of a deck of cards. I wanted to play old Pokemon games but they Miyoo Mini doesn't have a real time clock built in and I got sick of setting the time manually with the romhack. I should probably give it another go.

The Miyoo Mini is set up to work out the box, but I ended up setting it up again to use the recommended menu with retroarch.

    • I think you can install a clock with Onion OS.

      • It only runs when the game runs. And I noticed if I quit the game and start it again the clock jumps a couple of hours ahead, meaning I need to turn the in game clock back which might mess with berries. I never played gold/silver as a kid and those are the games I wanted to get into, try to experience what I missed out on back then. I probably should have just bought an Analogue Pocket which does have RTC, though I don't know if any GB/C cores can access it yet.

  • Are anbernic themselves good with support?

My RG351V was dead on arrival and it was a pain trying to get a resolution through Hekka. Got there in the end but reutqired perseverance.

    • From what I've seen in threads online, it might take a little back and forth, but I haven't heard of people being left holding the ball.

But I don't know that the support is different from the manufacturers of any of the competing devices either.

Buying on eBay from Anbernic directly is likely to be a safer bet though

    • I bought a device and the screen was broken. They dragged it out so much that it went beyond the return window. Ebay dispute and refunded the same day.

Shipped from Australia but support is running in China.

      Direct from Anbernic eBay.

QA is shite on the newer Anbernics. Two devices and both had issues. My 351p no issues whatsoever.

  • How do you use the shoulder buttons and the thumbsticks at the same time?

    • +1

It's not that huge a distance, although it can be a little awkward. That's the trade off with these vertical devices though.

Retro Game Corps discusses ergonomics quite a bit in his reviews https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bG3yPF2hfM&t=458s

      • Cheers, so good for a one thumb stick game, say all those on the N64.

        • +2

          I don't see why not.

As someone who didn't own an N64 I always struggled with it's controller anyway, so find this easier.

  • Great Unit, I have one and it emulates games extremely well including the Sega Dreamcast.

Imagine having a portable device that can play games like Shenmue and all your other favourite classics from the arcades to your favourite consoles.

    • Can it play Bangai-O without a drop in frame rate? Because even the actual DC struggled

    • +1

      My phone does that

    • Does it support run-ahead?

The idea of having a little emulator is cool but input/display lag kills it for me.

  • -2

    DO NOT GET IT!
Anbernic got shitty as charging port google RG353V wont charge so many people compalined as well I had one unit and died after plugging it into my normal usb C charge cable, support was like u shouldve used old power brick sorry.
get miyoo this brand has shitty as hardware with their charging port its basically old usb converted to usb c without proper hardware.

    • +1

Isn't this the same issue where some USB-C ports (on devices themselves) aren't actually USB-C but expect power from a USB-A => USB-C cable

      Shouldn't kill the device but won't charge from a fully-compliant USB-C charger

      • no more major issues so many people have reported it.
my one couldnt get any charges after using my phone charger people suggest getting an old power brick that only takes 5v 2amp

        • +1

So it's not bricked? It just won't charge via USB PD, only a USB C cable that has a USB A on the end (which it comes with).

That's pretty normal for cheaper electronics. I've got a bunch of things that won't charge USB C to USB C, but never had one brick.

And pretty sure I've plugged my RG351V into a USB C charger by mistake plenty of times, never bricked it, just didn't charge it.

          • @kapone: it wont charge at all! it completely died i googled some said opening and putting back battery plug i did that and even bought new batteries and no luck.
i did notice some small fuses were darkish as result of plugging it into fast charger.
google am sure u find others same boat

  • +2

If you're looking at this, you should also be considering the Miyoo Mini, it doesn't play PSP & N64, but most of the consoles that the above does for half the price and half the size.

It sells out very frequently, but I'm very happy with mine, some games I can play one handed which is neat.

    • +2

      How small are your hands?

      • +1

yeah i love the idea of small form factor but my hands cramp up just looking at these small models.

even 351mp which I thought was a good layout cramps up into a 3-4 hour session of pokemon unbound..

      • +1

Exactly. That's why I initially looked at the RG351V over the Miyoo. I prefer the Gameboy size and form factor over something smaller like the Miyoo Mini

    • Except it seems to be out of stock everywhere, unless you wait > 2 months for delivery or pay more than double the RRP price (I have seen $200) for something weaker than the 353V.

      • I didn't have to wait long, they release stock every couple days, almost daily, about 200 units.

They either release it as they produce it, or they make it look rare so that everyone who is looking that day has to act fast.

The popular colours sell out within less than 10 minutes each night.

  • I only recently saw this on my YouTube shorts, and now it's on Ozbargain hmmm

    • Big brother is watching

      * cue xfile theme song

  • Wouldnt a Super console x be better for the post 90s games? I realise its a different type of product.

  • Misleading title tag, eBay Plus not required to get the slightly higher price @RichardL

    • Fixed.

  • +2

Anbernic produce fantastic devices. Always impressed with their quality. Buttons feel fantastic.

Ive got the 353m and the missus has the 280v.

    • And great screens too

    • Got the RG353M the other day - lovely little device, even plugs into the TV with a mini hdmi cable and acts as a wired controller.

  • +1

My unrequested thoughts: Don't get it. Get a cheaper device that does 16-bit systems, plus the PlayStation, or get a more powerful device that is in landscape so you can really use the thumb-sticks properly.

    • Cheaper and smaller: RG35XX with Garlic OS (Fixed PSX performance a couple of days ago).
    • Comfortable and Performant: Retroid Pocket 3+ (Not the faulty Retroid Pocket 3).
    • Best performance for the price? Controller for your current or older Android phone.
    • +1

Fixed PSX performance a couple of days ago

Thanks mate, will look into it. I only care about THPS but there were some bits with my 351mp where even in the opening level that had some definite performance issues.

Also tried Siphon filter 3 as that was a HUGE favourite back in the day but how on earth we played without analogue sticks back in the day for this type of game still boggles my mind… the performance was also not fantastic :(

      • +1

I know what you mean about those controls, I went back to Tomb Raider and struggled, thankfully on PC there is the modding community that have allowed for some critical tweaks including better controls.

    • +1

Agree that a landscape device is better for those spending most of their time playing the 'newer' retro consoles rather than 16 bit and earlier.

    • Out of interest what was your trouble noted with the RP3? For me it was charging speed, the buttons were fixed pretty quickly… Besides that, it's main problem is it was superseded before it was even fully launched.

Becoming a bit of a major problem for Retroid now releasing new hardware constantly

      • Well, I've not used one and those that don't have issues seem to love it. However, looking on Reddit there seems to be a higher than normal amount of problems with the RP3, so it seems wiser to hold out for the RP3+ or get the older RP2+ that is very similar in performance.

  • Temped, but I think my hands will cramp up

  • +1

Try Aliexpress, you may find cheaper price.
