  • Just bought a refurb Fujitsu U939X 2-in-1, it comes with a 512GB SSD (assuming M2 because it's an ultrabook) but I assume it'll be the original (Samsung PM981) or a budget POS the seller installed, so I'm going to change it.

Will it support PCIe gen 4 drives or am I limited in some way?

    • +5

PCIe Gen 4 is backward compatible, but I don't think your Fujitsu U939X will benefit from the Gen 4 Speed.

      Fujitsu Lifebook U939X disassembly video

      • Too easy, I'll just get a gen 3 one then…it's only for watching Youtube & torrenting files.

    • +3

It will run at Gen 3 speeds since the CPU and mobo won't support Gen 4
If you're after a 4TB Drive, I would recommend the Team Group MP34, a midrange drive that has DRAM and TLC nand for a similar price
This is lower quality and if you won't get see the increased transfer rates since it is limited to Gen 3 speeds

I don't need a 4TB drive, I was just hijacking the post to grab some info!

I just want a decently fast & reliable SSD to replace what I expect will be a subpar inclusion.

    Sequential Read: 3500 MB/s
    Sequential Write: 3000 MB/s
    Endurance (TBW): 800 TB
    Warranty: 5 Years

Great option for a cheap daily driver for general populations, this is roughly equivalent to 200gb per day, everyday for 10 years.

this is roughly equivalent to 200gb per day, everyday for 10 years

I love the way you frame this, really puts into perspective just how f**king asinine the "bUt MuH tBw" comments that haunt SSD posts on this site are.

I mean, christ, OzB would lost it's mind over a 100TBW drive but even that would last you 10 years @ 25gb p/day, still hilariously OTT for like 95% of use cases.

      • The other way I like to look at TBW is that I could completely fill & then wipe this drive 100 times. And considering that most use cases for these large NVMe drives is game storage, data is (generally) being written once and then kept for a decent period of time.

But as you've rightfully pointed out - even with a 100TBW endurance, you could download a new game to that drive everyday and delete it at the end of the day and it still would not have hit its specified endurance after 5 years.

P3 plus is only $30 more for gen 4 speeds. No real world difference (unless you have a ps5 and buy a heat sink) https://www.amazon.com.au/Crucial-Plus-NAND-Drive-Multicolor…

    • So that will work well on a PS5? What heatsink would be best to pair?

      • +1

Why do you guys need so much PS5 storage?

      • +1

        doesn't meet the speed requirement

        • Yeah it does, I have a 4tb P3plus in my ps5 right now and works just fine

      • I have a 4tb p3+ in my ps5 with a $20 heat sink from
        Amazon and it works fine

    HODL for the drop.

Wasn't the PNY 4TB at $299 way better?

    • +1

imo the Team MP34 for $309 has been the best 4TB deal so far

      • Cool thanks, i'm out of date when it comes to PC hardware

  • Working great in 2019 iMac 4K using SinTech internal adapter. Shame upgrade not possible in later Macs.

  • Endurance not that great only 800TBW
