  • Worth an upgrade from 4 year old Dyson V6?

    • +11

Yep I replaced my V8 and it's performing better than that was after years of use.

      • Grabbed 1, see how it goes!

    • +4

Absolutely. The Dyson V6 doesnt even compare in the scheme of things or even the battery life. I've had mine for over 3 years now and still going strong.

    • seems like the batteries for the Viomi is alot more expensive than a knock off dyson one.

      • +1

Battery from AU stores costs almost as much as the vacuum cleaner and lasts only for 10 minutes. You could buy for $90-$120 from Ailbaba, but not sure when it may explode. Not sure if its value for money unless battery lasts at least 30 minutes on Higher settings.

      • Apparently yes, lots of people commenting on this issue on past Viomi deals. I ended up getting a dyson just for this, and also have lots of alterntative replacement batteries (can even buy an adapter to use my Ozito batteries), nozzles, pieces, etc.

        • that sounds great, where to buy adapter for ozito battery?

  • Got this for 185 last week via same store last week, ah well. Impressed with it so far

    • +1

How long the battery last for low and high power mode?

      • +5

Expect an hour on low, 30 minutes on medium and 10 minutes on high. I only ever need to run it on low or medium.

  • +30

A friend gave me an older Viomi cordless vac, thing totally sucks. Would recommend

    • +8

Lol you got me for a second

      • +4

        You got sucked in.

      • +3

        Sucker

    • +2

      Leaves the competition in dust?

    • -1

Totally not recommend if you got that comment as it sucks but sucks badly

Not worth to be sucked into this sucker deal

  • Thanks OP, finally got one

  • Got one. Cheers

  • -8

Viomi… is this a ripoff, of the ripoff (Xiaomi) of the Dyson?

    • +5

TIL that alternative brands are ripoffs

      • -4

You've got alternative brands… and you have intellectual property theft and copyright infringement. But this is Ozbargain so who cares right, we love our Xiaomi "Notebook" (totally not a "Macbook"), Viomis etc.

        • +5

and you have intellectual property theft and copyright infringement.

Which the Viomi does not infringe on.

          • +1

@Clear: Totally does not try to look like the typical hand held Dyson design.

            • +8

@ram4ram: It looks completely different to the Dyson design. All stick vacuums have similarity, but not identical. You can't patent the wheel, but you can patent a specific wheel, ring, tire, or manufacturing process. Otherwise Reflex should sue the shit out of J.Burrows for having identical looking paper. A4 and white.

                • +5

@ram4ram: You brought it up and I'm pointing out that you're wrong and spreading misinformation. The Viomi does not infringe on any patents, trademarks or copyright.

                  That's not being triggered.

                  • -6

@Clear: oh ok… It is a totally original product then. Not convinced but OK. Still wondering how it compares to the Kmart one I commented below.

  • got one. thanks OP! Come to AU $157.99 for me with $15 off code.

    • what $15 off code?

      • ebay plus member I guess

        • I'm a member, don't see any $15 voucher…

          • @sintro: seems like it doesnt show up on a web browser. It works perfectly fine on the app.

      • Yea, plus member.
There's a line that says "Save AU $15.00 on this item. Show me how" and Show me how is a link, once clicked it give you a code.

        • +1

Thanks, I don't see it. Guess I don't get it on my account

  • How does it work compared to the Dyson V8?

    • +1

I've had a V8 Animal for years so it's degraded a bit. I found the Viomi to handle hard surfaces a lot better than the V8, but animal hair less so as to be expected.

    • +1

      https://www.definingdecade.com/xiaomi-stick-vacuum/

Seems to be slightly better for much less.

  • thanks op got one to replace my old dc58 :)

  • Thanks got one for the in-laws, already have an older model so hope I won't regret not getting one for myself too!

  • +1

Bought one, based on the positive comments and feedback in this post!

  • +15

I personally don't rate this after owning for 18 months - The tiny rubber wheels eventually wore down on the main motorised head until it no longer has clearance and starts to scrape wooden floors. No way to get anything but a whole replacement head for $90 bucks.

Here is a photo of the tiny wheels for reference. https://ibb.co/q5YMLSw

Edit: here's a photo to illustrate the wear on the wheels. The axle wears down the inside of the rubber wheels which creates too much play (see how much light coming through around the metal axle which makes the effective diameter reduce when they roll… And they roll like shit when worn.
    https://ibb.co/WPc251m

Support also hopeless and only 12 month warranty. I gave up and bought a Dyson.

    • +4

You can save a bit extra by getting parts off AliExpress. It's about US$53 / A$81 here and even better when there's a cashback increase. Obviously directed at anyone else out there with one wanting spare parts.

      • Yeah good advice. I really wish you could just buy the wheels and axles though like you can for other brands. Believe me I had a good look around 😭

        • +3

I don't have the A9 (though just ordered one) but had a similar issue with a previous vacuum.

I bought a cheap digital caliper from eBay, and precisely measured the wheel and axle size. Then searched around on eBay and AliExpress until I found a replacement with compatible dimensions. They worked fine.

I found that oiling the little axles occasionally stopped them wearing out again, and in generally made it push along much easier. Every few months when I would clean the vacuum head, I would take the casters out and wipe off the axle and oil again. Wear is from dirt getting in there, so important to clean it.

I used a squirt of sticky chain oil I had, but anything thick would work. Even cooking oil. Not anything thin like WD40. Perhaps ideal would be grease.

Don't get me wrong, it's annoying that these companies save a few cents by not using a caster / axle design more resistant to wear. Or just including a handful with the vacuum, or having them available for sale.

I will measure the A9 wheels and axle when it arrives, and see if any aftermarket parts will fit.

          • @Prong: I did the same dance on AliExpress. It's tough to find exact specs. What I can tell you is that they aren't easily available as I tried both a shark set and a Dyson set that were very close but no dice. I just started doing the maths in my head if the problem were to re-occur and it quickly becomes expensive vaccuum. The rubber on the wheels is like a shock absorption spacer I.e Very soft and grippy in comparison to Dyson which feel like a harder plastic.

If you do find some matching ones post them here 💪

            • @Thelairster: Yeah fair call - I got lucky with mine it seems.

I will definitely post here either way once my A9 arrives.

            • +1

@Thelairster: Ok, wheels. @Thelairster I see what you mean re: the soft rubber like wheels and yeah they will not last.

The axle is 3mm diameter, and 16.7mm long.
The wheel is 10mm diameter, 7.5mm wide.

As you noted, nothing available fits. The axle length does not matter because we can reuse the existing ones. But the 3mm ID wheels I found are over 10mm OD, so would need to be say spun on a drill and sanded down. Doable, but best avoided.

I had a quick play, and I think I could make decent wheels using thermoplastic, but again, trying to avoid effort.

The closest I found that could work is metal bearings, with 3mm ID, and 10mm OD. The widest I found was 4mm wide.
The wheel lot has room for an 8mm wide wheel, so 2x bearings per axle should work pretty well.

The bearings are 623ZZ size, and I bought 10 to test from eBay (shipped from China) for $2.68.

Of course the downside is the external 'wheel' surface is then metal. I can't see it causing issues, but it won't have the same shock absorbing etc.

Another option is plastic 623 size bearings, or metal ones with a plastic coating or rubber coating.

So same deal - 3mm ID, 10mm OD, 4mm wide - so two per axle. The downside here is the increased cost for 4. $10 to $20 AUD.

I am in no rush, so I will wait for my plain metal bearings and test them before buying the more expensive types.

There are a lot of different bearings, bushes, guides rollers etc, so it may be that there is something better suited. Or better pricing on the above options.

            • +2

@Thelairster: Ok, the 10mm bearings arrived. Two on the axle works well, and is basically a direct size replacement for the foam rubber ones.

              https://i.imgur.com/KgcrwvS.jpg

It is of course a lot noisier on hard floors. But also a lot easier to push around. Carpet appears the same.

To try and quieten it, I put some heat shrink on the bearings. Super easy, and does make it a little bit quieter.
I will see how long the heat shrink holds up to wear.

              https://i.imgur.com/pdSrxTN.jpg

I also ordered some 8mm bearings and plan to put a layer of glue lined heat shrink on them as a test. That should give a tiny bit of shock absorbing and be tougher.

The only other thing I have found that might work is a variety of silicone and rubber 'rod' used for sealing gaps etc. I need to figure out if the foamed varieties will be dense or strong enough. Of course the downside is a hole needs to be drilled or melted through the middle.

              https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/225599726752

I see that Bunnings has similar foamed rubber (9mm though) so I will check out that out to see how firm it is.

              • @Prong: This is great. Appreciate your efforts in helping the community here.

          • @Prong: My A9 also have the same exact problem. The softened rollers don't provide enough lift and scrape the floor. Time to raid kids Lego bucket to find matching wheels lol.

          • @Prong: I would think white lithium grease could be best for this? Although it might pick up some dirt over time.

      • Would those be compatible for Xiaomi vac? Cheers

    • +2

Thank you. Cancelled Order (was on back order anyway). Selling at PC Byte for $169 anyway with local p/up.

    • +1

thanks. im thinking of cancelling this now after reading your post. even at 159, i dont want to be spending a new head every 2 yrs! Ive this problem with the vax stick at the moment where the dust gets stuck and rubber wheels are hard to roll but normally cleaning that seem to have worked ok so far.

  • +1

All of these positive comments got me to buy one. Looks like they're on backorder now so a slight wait for it to arrive. Thanks OP!

  • Is this type of vacuum cleaner good for car or are those cheaper handheld vacuums like this one https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/403291663111?chn=ps&_ul=AU&_trkp… [Baseus 135W 15000Pa Handheld Car Vacuum Cleaner Strong Suction A3 Clean Robot] perform better as they have smaller body which could help with harder to reach areas?

    • +1

The difficulty with this and any handheld stick vacuum is getting into all the nooks and crannies. The Baseus would certainly be easier, but you lose out on suction and bin capacity.

I think having a flexible hose attachment is better for the car. I've not got around to finding one yet.

    • You want the suction of the bigger vacuum IMO, unless your car only very needs a mild clean.

Look for a handheld model with a hose attachment. I used to have a vacuum with one, and it was great for vacuuming the car. You hold the vacuum in one hand, and use the various tools on the end of the hose in the other. Made it very easy to get into all the tough to reach spots.

Or if you have somewhere you can plug in when vacuuming, just get a cheap bagged vacuum, or better yet, a shop vac. They have much much more power. And get a section of pipe extension from eBay, and some extra cleaning heads. That way the vacuum cleaner just sits out next to the car and you can reach everything.

The even cheaper option is to look out for people chucking vacuum cleaners in hard rubbish / council cleanups. And take the hose from that. I collected a few, and now my shop vac has a 5m long hose. It depends what you find, but in my case the hoses could mostly just plug into each other, then with a bit of gaffa tape to keep them coming free.

  • Don't forget ShopBack Westpac for another $20 off today.

    • Don't think it will work with the codes

      • Oh, I thought westpac cashback was code independent, maybe I am wrong.

        • +2

Only if the standard cashback would be valid with a code. Usually it's something like 1% with code + 15% westpac, which is fine. But it's only westpac cashback today so codes would be invalid unless it's on the shopback page

  • +1

Thanks OP, bought one. Slightly cheaper for Ebay plus users. I also used the $30 gift card from Ebay and paid $122.99. Just in time.

    • How do you get the $30 ebay gift card?

      • +1

Tried cancelling my ebay plus subscription and it then shows you an offer to stay and get a $30 gift card instead, once your membership renews. I got a card last year as well haha.

  • Thanks OP, bought myself one as well after having a Xiaomi Mi Robot vacuum for years now which has impressed me a lot over that time

Anyone here had any of the higher end Xiaomi robot vacuums and could provide feedback good or bad?

  • -4

How does this compare to Kmart's https://www.kmart.com.au/product/cordless-stick-vacuum-clean…?

THe Kmart one costs the same, and is more powerful, bigger battery, no?

THe Xiaomi comes with more 'bits'.

    KMart:
    25.9V (7*3.7V) 2200mAh Li-Ion battery Pack
25 KPA Suction power on the highest setting for 12 min run time

    Xiaomi:
    23KPa
    2500mAh battery

    • +1

      Kmart sucks

This is cheap but well designed

      Ergonomics etc.

      • You mean it doesn't suck.

    • It's not always about suction power. It could have a million KPA you just wouldn't be able to move it. It's better to know how effective the vac head is as it makes contact with the surface its being used on.

  • +1

what does backorder mean? will take months?

    • Ships within 10 business days, so 2 weeks.

  • Personally i would stick to dyson due to more third party inventory like battery and motor head. Australia wide warranty and support is a bonus.

  • +1

STUDENTB20 brings it down to $153. If you have a student beans account (I assume it’s locked but might be generic?)

  • +1

    $152.99 with ebay plus.

  • +3

Our expereince the batteries don't last too well. We have the full set (Carpet, hard floors etc) and it only lasted 2 years or so

  • better than the dreame?

  • I’ve got a Dreame V9 and it lasted 3 years. Battery lasts for about 10 mins on High mode. Rubber seals aren’t the best, as dust starts to creep in. Replacement batteries are around $100 but takes forever to get delivered from Aliexpress.

  • +1

says out of stock and cant be purchased..

  • +1

You can get the same vac through pandselectronics for 139$ local pickup in Lidcombe, NSW - lol I'm in WA

  • +2

Bought a year ago and Battery is dead now… rubbish…. Not recommend.

    • Thanks

    • These type of batteries for these type of devices ain't gonna last long anyway. And 2500mah is pretty crappy anyhow, I'm sure someone out there has a bigger modified battery for this device. Look at power tools some of those batteries cost 150$ ea too.

      • +1

Yeah batteries in a powerful handheld vacuum are a consumable item. At full power the batteries are being discharged at 7C, which is on the higher end for 2,500 mAh 18650s.

I don't know what batteries the A9 actually used, but even with decent quality cells that can output 20A, battery longevity is only going to be a few hundred cycles at full power. And the vacuums will be plugged in and kept at full charge most of the time, which also has an adverse impact on battery life.

Not running the vacuum at full power every time would help extend the number of cycles. It's not practical for many people, but ideal is being able to end up with ~50% charge left, and then only plugging the vacuum in to charge shortly before next time you vacuum. For example, I vacuum daily (dog hair, hardwood floors) and have a smart plug that turns the vacuum on the charge about 5pm (and off after), so it is fully charged when I use it in the evening. If I need it for clean ups in the meantime, it still has 50% charge so no issue. This wouldn't work on a bigger house though.

And of course is managing the batteries like this is not convenient, it's totally not worth the time. I only did it because my previous previous vacuum did not have a replaceable battery.

        • So it should be similar for dyson as well?

          • +6

@IDontKnowWhyImHere: Yep. It may vary slightly for specific models depending on the exact battery, but generally lithium batteries don't like being discharged fast, or to spend time fully charged, or fully discharged.

300 - 500 cycles (so uses from full to flat) is what typical lithium batteries can do before they don't run for as long. If you run the vacuum at full power every time, the batteries are under higher stress, and they will last fewer cycles overall. If run on medium power, they last more cycles overall. I would say if you vacuum on full power every day, the battery will start show signs of reduced capacity in a year or less. If you use medium and low, then it should last many years of vacuuming every day.

The other thing is that if just sitting doing nothing, the battery slowly degrades internally. That much is very very slow at ~50% charge, and is faster at higher or lower charges. Until you get over 80% or under 20% it's pretty minimal. So only charging it before use helps it last longer.

You'll notice many phones do something similar to what I describe - when you plug them in at night they track when you usually unplug them, and charge up to say 80%, then do the last 20% charge right before you wake up and use it. That minimises the time the battery spends at full charge, helping it last longer overall.

For batteries used less frequently it doesn't matter as much, but anything that gets the battery drained very often, a bit of management helps reduce how fast the battery wears and can significantly prolong battery life. But of course it is a trade off on the time spent managing the battery, vs the increased overall cost over time when replacing the battery. I only bother with the vacuum because it is used every day at a predictable time, so it's very low effort.

            • @Prong: Wow, this is really a great info for everyone, thanks heaps for sharing it. Very detailed one and not aware of how it should be handled. Now I should follow your tips while using lithium batteries in general.

              • @IDontKnowWhyImHere: And..

Don't forget cell quality. Not all batteries are equal (! =)

Battery, temperature during recharge/discharge(use included)/storage. Regardless of what some manufacturers say there are always optimal operating temperatures for batteries, they don't like too cold or too hot = bit like humans.

    • is this not covered under warranty? my $100 vax from bunnings though its a slow charger which takes all day is still going ok and it has been 5 yrs.

  • Can’t add to cart even though back order in title.

    • +1

Did you miss the big out of stock before that.

    • Back in stock now.

  • Saw this too late =/
