      • I think at the time I posted there were less helpful comments. This was the comment I was referring to. It added no value at all.

"Only on OzBargain could buying absolute crap for $60 because the "lowest price in other stores is $199" be applauded as intelligent."

But comments such as these are more helpful and I actually look for comments like this when I'm on the fence about something.

"I've been using the "Mizu" for the past few years as a regular. Still an upgrade and gives you that small "wow" factor when you upgrade from something that's Kmart. Sharpness will need to maintain quite frequently thou, probably bring out that whetstone every couple of months. Still a great price for the knives. If you have $1k+ to spend then I suggest you go with "Shun"."

"This uses 420j2 steel, quick google shows that this is the lowest tier steel when used for cooking due to low sharpness retention and wear resistant. Probably the same quality as kitchen knives from Kmart."

        • +2

I guess even the "crap" comment could give one a moment's pause and maybe prompt further investigation before going for the dopamine hit.

  • +2

Hi op, I just purchased this a full price yesterday, are you able to refund the $1090 by any chance

  • +1

I've been using the "Mizu" for the past few years as a regular. Still an upgrade and gives you that small "wow" factor when you upgrade from something that's Kmart. • A second recommendation for shun if youre going to drop a k on a knife set.

That said, don't waste money on a full 'set' of knived. Try some knives, and just go with what feels good. 80% of all cooking knife work you'll do will be with a chefs knife anyway (assuming you get something that fits and handles well).

  • +3

Is it possible to even get it at rrp? Like, which shops have it as an option to buy it at that price?

    • +1

Similar here if you really want to pay RRP …sure they wouldn't say no..

  • +1

    Baccacrap!

  • Thanks. Good mothers day present sorted.

Coming from a bit of a knife snob…
Are they exceptional knives? No not really, but for $60 they are good enough compare to most everything at that price point for a set.

  • I had a set of wooden handle Baccarat knives, but had to return them as they kept giving me splinters so swapped them for steel handle ones

  • +11

These should not be on here. They're basically counterfeit. Notoriously bad quality made in China knifes. These are only really for show or the pretentious. The "Damascus" look is laser edged onto the knife. Buyer beware.

    • +1

Sure but if I was moving out of home for the first time and just wanted a knife set, this is a bargain. Sure the "right" thing to do would be to buy a $60 chef knife and use it for everything but then you don't have anywhere to store it, any way to cut bread effectively, etc.

Worst case someone throws out all the knives in a couple years and uses the block for better knives.

And I say this as someone with thousands of dollars of high end knives.

      • -1

You can put lipstick on a $70 pig…. it's still a $70 pig. IMHO the block is not worth $70. Real knives cost but you will never, ever replace them, forget about their "lifetime warranty". These are dressed up crap and worth closer to the $9.99 for delivery.

        • +4

Sometimes all you want/need is a $70 pig. The lipstick is a bonus. You could get decent life out of crap knives like this with a sharpener and a honing rod. Never going to be incredible knives but they will effectively cut food of cared for properly.

          Different strokes for different folks.

          • +5

@EBC: I’m confused. Will these knives cut pork or not? Or do I need lipstick

            • +1

@bemybubble: they'll cut lipstick but not pork

            • @bemybubble: You need to go to special butchers that only sell the meat of animals that were wearing lipstick when they died. A bit of extra work but worth it for the savings on the knives.

Just bought 3 sets. Just in case I have some occasions and need to bring a gift lol
Really nice and bargain for a house warming gift tbh

      This guy Ozbargains.

    • In some cultures giving knives is a no no.

      • In all cultures, giving these knives is a no no…

According to Pricehipster this was ordinarily $200. So still a 'deal' but the $1159 price tag is extremely misleading.

Also found this review which says 70% off is standard…

You should not pay more than the standard 70% off as the knifes are made in china with 420j2 stainless steel, which will require regular sharpening.
Perfectly fine if you are not expecting a chefs knife

  • Cant go wrong for $60.

    Thanks OP

    • Cant go wrong for $60

are you sure though? (based on comments)

I hate those wooden blocks, they take up too much bench space, better to use a magnetic wall strip

    • really?
      how small is your bench?

      • +1

6 lineal meters. Those wooden blocks are super ugly too

  • That's about the right price for that set. I have a Baccarat 'Japanese' steel paring knife. Thought it might be decent for an $80 knife. It's not. Edge retention and sharpness after sharpening is slightly better than the knives in a $80 Wiltshire set I got from Kmart when I first left home.

  • +1

Based on comments, this is better choice https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/767692 at least $23.39 for 18 pieces you can't go wrong,K mart sell more than a dollar per item

  • Just say no to companies like this. They're always 80%+ off. The original prices are fake. The steel is not the 'finest Japanese steel'. It's a cheap mass produced grade.

  • OOS

  • $60 (RRP $1149)

I bet every company in AU wishes they could work on that sort of markup

  • Junk…Just some random Japanese words slapped on a box of made in China knives.

  • Would of bought them for $30 cause why not $60 is still too much.

Then again can get a Fibrox for around $30 so maybe not even worth buying it for $30 :/

  • +1

    No, no, no, no, no.

Rubbish, counterfeit garbage at any price and flagrant false advertising to suggest any person has ever paid more than a couple hundred for this malleable shitezenhausen.

Spend the $60 on a Victorinos fibrox chefs and paring knives and you’ll be happier and safer…

    • +1

Supposedly $1100 off is the key metric in here, not that they're unmitigated rubbish, nor that you can do better, as you've pointed out.

  • Ridiculous RRP. Almost certain to be a scam. If you're interested in practicality, spend ~$50-$80 on a chef's knife (I've heard good things about Victorinox), buy a 1000 and 3000 grit waterstone, and learn how to sharpen your knife.

If you are actually interested in spending stupid amounts of money on knives, try Knives & Stones. They're located here in Aus - specifically Sydney - and the owner's an absolute champ. The knives stocked there are the real deal, and stupidly expensive to boot. I've spent several thousand there myself… on 7 knives in total. https://www.knivesandstones.com.au/

    Thank OP got 2 sets.

  • Damn I paid $1149 for these last week… Shame I didn’t wait

  • Well, I'll definitely never touch another baccarat product in my life after seeing this. What utter dogs

Has anyone has their order shipped yet?

    • Just got notification my order has been cancelled due to insufficient stock. I bought this within an hour of this being uploaded onto ozbargain as well…

      • -1

        Fortunate

      • Same

        • Item was out of stock and took them more than a week to tell everyone. Not great.

          • @FreddyMerc: Don't lose any sleep. You missed out on a curious knife block and some of the worst knives on the market…

    • I received it yesterday. To be fair, definitely better than K-mart counterpart but yea RRP is inflated. Knives are quite sharp out of box but dunno how long sharpness will last. I don't mind sharpening tho so it's not a prob. Knives block is also nicer than what i have atm so overall it's a better display than my current knives block. Wish the wood colour is a bit darker but not a deal breaker. Overall, i think it's a good value purchase but would not spend more than $100 for it.

Can’t find any trace of my order.

What a waste of time. Though I feel relieved reading the comments.

    • I didn’t see any update with my order as well. Sent the ticket to them and it’s been 2 days now and still no reply.

    • updated today as 18/05/23, since I sent ticket to support on 15/05/23. Finally got reply said it's insufficient stock since they took the payment on 5/05/23 and restock after first out of stock and restock the darker colour. Some people may got their darker color sets, but my earlier order were ignored there and by the end got nothing. Very upsets of their poor stocking system.
