  • Couple years learning piano as a kid and was an aspiring DJ after finishing school, would this be suitable to get back into both in a fun way..? 😅

Unlike almost all other MIDI keyboards, this has a speaker so would be perfect for tinkering with!

But no sequencer. It really depends on what the desired use-case is. Speaker and built-in sounds are only good for live jamming. It'll need to be hooked up to other gear to create loops and entire tracks.

        • Yeah, was hoping it'd be alright to practice and self-jam (no pun intended) and then hook it up and learn those ropes when I want to create tracks and stuff. 😁

      • Thank you, I'll probably pull the pin when I get home. 😁

Thanks OP. Got one for my 11yr old kid who is an aspiring muso. This will indeed allow him to explore and create. The online Tuts had me sold.

    • I wish my 10 year old was even close to using something like this.

  • Did this attach any lesson?

  • If anyone has any experience with these: What software do you recommend on PC? (for our 16 year old)

    • Hmm. if you were mac it would be garageband but for PC its ableton i would expect. Intro copy is 150 bucks. https://www.ableton.com/en/shop/live/.

Otherwise you can try open source https://lmms.io/

    • but apparently comes with software too "Music Production Starter Kit: MPK Editor, MPC Beats, Hybrid 3 Mini Grand, Velvet & x5 MPC Expansions."

Comes with 6 months of Reason+ subscription too.

      Reaper. It's free and great.
      https://www.reaper.fm

      • That looks awesome, but please stop… I'm 3 videos in but I'm supposed to be working!

      • Cool

      • Interested in knowing how it's free?

        • +1

You can use Reaper for free for 60 days after you first download and install it. After that, you must buy a license. Reaper will continue to work without issue after the 60 days, but you will be in breach of the licensing terms if you continue to use it without a valid license.

  • Any recommendations for similar, but with rechargeable battery built in (even if it costs more)?

  • Besides the speaker, how does it compare to the Arturia MiniLab Mk3, which can be had for $149 on eBay:

Youtuber Sanjay C says the Arturia are better keyboards

Having had an Akai (sold it) and keeping my two Arturias, I second that. :)

        • Thanks guys ;)

      • +1

I have both, arturia is much better in terms of build quality. the MK3 feels like a toy.

    • Looks like $169?

      • Ah yep sorry - might have to be eBay Plus member to get the "AU $20.00 off your purchase of AU $150.00 or more" deal.

    • Built in speaker for me is a big plus.. can use portably without anything else

  • 6 months of Reason+ would be around $20 US per month, that's a pretty good deal for beginners wanting to test the waters.

For those just getting into music production, I'd recommend the Native Instruments M32 over this. It doesn't have pads or built-in speakers, but it does have more keys and significantly more software. At the moment they're including Komplete 14 Select for free (normal price $299, often goes half price though). It also includes Maschine 2.0 and Ableton Live Lite.

  • Is this the model Gene Belcher uses?

  • Every parent on Ozbargain needs to buy one of these for their kids asap. We need more Vince Clarke's in this world and less hip hop crap.

  • The black on black is 135 on Amazon too

Keys on the mk3 are wayyy better than the mk2, not quite as good as arturia’s tho.

    • They are not the same model. The one listed here is the mini play.

    • That is the version without the inbuilt speaker
