I bought from these guys a while back. Super quick postage

  • Been waiting 7 days for them to mark my order as shipped

Yeah Sparesbox are like that unfortunately. It’s previously been said on here their inventory/IT systems are crap.
They seem to have a number of warehouses around the country and some items will ship within a few days whereas sometimes you can be waiting an extended period and even worse sometimes the order will be cancelled.

      • Yeah it happened to me another time a couple of years ago too. I put them on my 'never again' list but here I am lol.

        • Yeah problem is they are often the best price lol. Sometimes I pricematch their regular store at SCA but often the best price is on eBay with coupons.

          It’s a bit like roulette.

      • There parent company owns Repco and they only have one warehouse in Melbourne since Covid and laying off most of there stuff.
It's a skeleton operation and they don't keep much in stock. It's ordered in from distributors and then posted out hence the prices.

    • Crazy, mine was next day delivery.

Just depends. I've bought multiple items from Sparesbox. Sometimes Amazon quick, sometimes really slow (like a couple weeks).
Their pricing is why I keep going back… although I can't justify 5w30 oil at this price. I'm sure its special grade/type/etc…. but all I want is decent priced 5w30. $50+ is not decent.

  • I top up every 6 months in the Skoda with the standard version of this, any experts care to weigh in on apex+ vs standard?
I only am topping up as she complains low oil 6m after a service usually. Seems to like burning through it

    • Not an oil expert but I checked the SDS for the two and there is definitely a difference so it’s not just a rebrand like some of the other APEX+ products.

Hi mate, I work in the industry.

ACEA C3 is the difference. C3 dictates mid saps content compared to A3/B4 grade oil.

Most latest gen European cars advises of ACEA C3 grade oil or higher to be compliant, particularly those who have DPF fitted, where its a must for warranty to be honoured.

The one you linked seems to be a A3/B4, I don't know why it says C3-12. I have a feeling Supercheap just uploaded the wrong image.

      The 12 denotes longlife oil.

The following is a good link if you want to know the difference:

      https://www.oilspecifications.org/acea.php

Looking at it further, it seems the APEX is their latest gen oil, whereas the one you linked is the previous gen. Sorry, I don't work for Nulon so no idea on that, just going by their website.

As long as the oil meets or exceeds your engine specification, in particular your manufacturer requirements, you're generally safe.

      • Hi Jay,

I have got an Audi diesel with DPF filter. I totally agree with you that C3 is nother interchangable by using A3/B4 oil, because of low ash required by DPF. My question is, if my car need VW 504. 507., can I interchange with C3 or even C1 oil? What's your opinion? Thank you.

          Hi GoodDealDave,

If you're worried about warranty, I'd go for an oil that is VW504/507 APPROVED oil above whether its C1/C3 (approved being the keyword). It means if something goes wrong and its due to the oil, the OEM (Audi in your case) can't deny warranty work as they have approved that oil.

Each brand oil has different properties, even if both are certified C1/C2/C3 et al. Different viscosity @ different temperatures, flash point, index and density.

          Hope that helps.

    • How many km has yours done? I'd start by going 5W-40.
But Euro engines are known to burn oil apparently (I have a BMW B48, it's sub 100k and burns ~1L/5,000km, I use 5W-40).

      • 110kkm, mine is maybe a bit higher than that. I haven't payed particular attention to the numbers.

        • 10W-50 then hehe

          • @fedaykin: I have no idea about what any of the naming convention is. I just use it because the manual said to. Why the change to 10w-50?

            • +1

@knobbs: Older engine = clearances get bigger due to wear = use thicker oil as a compensation.

  • does it work on japanese cars? Subaru forester

    • This is not the same spec oil. Castrol LL is the correct model for this Euro spec that is A3/B4.
