  • Wonder if its possible to remove the dual sided copper heatsink & use it with a standard MOBO heatsink

    • +1

You sure can. If you look at the reviews, someone opened one to find a different SSD within.

      • yep standard phillips screws. pretty straight forward, done it on this one before.

      • that would suck. Probably a returned item that the previous buyer swapped out intentionally

      • NV2 hahahhaa.

  • -1

    Are these actually good?

    • +2

      Yes

This combo of Phison E16/Kioxa TLC/Hynix DDR4 has been out for almost 4 years without part swapping BS and still does well

If you don't need the speed of a 980/990 Pro, KC3000 or SN850X, this is the one

      • Thanks. I'm assuming this will play well in my z390 Aorus Master.

        • +2

You would be running it at slower PCIe 3.0 speeds

If you don't intend to use the drive later in a newer PCIe 4.0 setup or a PS5, you are better off getting the $179 970 Evo Plus`

          • @Look Up: I suppose it'll do for now, but I'm thinking of future-proofing as well. Would most likely be migrating the drive to a newer build later.

            • @Munki: Electronics are getting cheaper and cheaper, this includes SSDs. Might be easier to settle with Gen 3 if it suits your need for now and get a Gen 4 when you get to a point of migrating your data. Everything is possible, I mean, we might see 4TB NVMe Gen 4 to be priced at $59 in 3 years time, who knows?

        • Phison E16 SSDs are losing their appeal nowadays. The only thing which people hype up on these are the larger than usual quoted TBW.

Today, its somewhat subpar PCIe gen 4 performance, coupled with date TLC NAND means the sustained write performance is "average" in terms of PCIe gen "3". Sure, there is SLC cache for PCIe gen 4, but E16 is first gen PCIe gen 4 chipset with somewhat lower bandwidth.

They are still fine I guess, it's just the price isn't that good unless you really care about having ssd maker provided heatsink.

          • @netsurfer: Yeah, if you get high huffing spec sheets, then they sure are losing their shine.

If you put it in your computer and use it, they're just fine.

            • @Joker042: Well, I bought a Phison E16 SSD 2 years ago. At that time, choices on cheap PCIe gen 4 SSDs were limited. Today, it is okay to get them if they are cheap enough.

Problem is, my SN570 2TB, which I paid less than this, beats this SSD in writes (even if you run this SSD in PCIe gen 4 x4 mode). Phison E16 SSDs need to be priced in PCIe gen 3 level now as Sony has long closed the door so PS5 no longer get fooled by these. 96L TLC, you can tell these SSDs are old stock. For my PCs with PCIe gen 4 x4 SSD support, I've picked flagship SSDs. E16 SSD is in my PS5 (I know, below specs).

Mine crapped out after 2 years… with minimal use for gaming only go figure..

  • +1

    Oooo shiny

  • Wonder if its worth waiting for the price of SSDs to stabilise as they seem to be dropping in price rapidly. Could be seeing much lower prices in the next few weeks/months

    • Everyone on Ozbargain HODL then they shall plummet

  • +1

Wow this one has a huge TBW at 3600TB!

    • Yes, wow! Almost 2TB/day for the whole warranty period.

  • Paid double for this two years ago ☹️

    • +4

Sounds like a good deal to me. You’ve had a lot of usage!

      • +2

Pretty much this. I bought for around $370 for my ps5 and the value is been amazing. I have so many games on my console that gets used weekly

  • I wonder how easy it is, or not, to remove the cheesy Aorus branding. I mean it's obvious to anyone (who cares) what this is

    • Super easy, it's basically a sticker.

  • A question for the knowledgeable … Have an Aorus X570 Elite MOBO but want to run a second M2 Drive… Now I am old & still learning so stop laughing…
But will this fit into the second M2 slot & will I require anything else ???

    C Drive Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB

    Thank you in advance

    • +1

It will work (assuming your graphics card (not taking more than 2 slots of space) won't block it due to the heatsink) and since it is a m.2 slot that is wired to the chipset, I guess it is okay to not get a flagship PCIe gen 4 SSD for it.

It's difficult to evaluate a Phison E16 based SSDs now due to various competition. Kioxia/Toshiba BiCS4 96L TLC is dated.

      C Drive Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB

That means you are not taking advantage of PCIe gen 4 x4.

      • Ok… This is what I can't get my head around… Could you please recommend a drive that would be suitable… Hence why I have a lot to learn still

Edit : Just had a look & understand now… I'm not getting full read/write speeds that I could be getting using PCIE Gen 3… Is that right ???
Could I get a Gen 4 SSD as the main drive & then put the Samsung into slot 2 on this Mobo ???

        • +1

In "theory", with PCIe gen 4 x4, the max sequential read speed could be ~7000MB/s. Max sequential write speed could be ~6900MB/s (but that's through SLC cache only). Problem is, unless you have proper / real needs, it is unlikely you really need PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs. Yes, if you have 2 of them, you can really copy at that kind of speed, but it is silly. Problem is, in general use, it is 4K random read/write that matters (and the speed is much slower), and the issue is SSDs have not improved much on 4K random low queue depth speed over the years.

Anyway, right now, there are no flagship SSDs being discounted. The market is flooded with cost effective and mainstream (not too expensive) SSDs.

This SSD is not ideal because it is an old model, and the NAND used is older than 970 Evo Plus (and inferior). It does have a controller that can take advantage of PCIe gen 4 x4, but not a great one (it is dated). So, it comes down to compromises. This SSD needs to be $145 or less before I would even consider recommending it now (at 2TB, I cannot ignore inferior sustained write).

If you are not in a hurry to get a SSD, wait for WD SN850X, Samsung 990 Pro, or Seagate Firecuda 530 2TB to drop down in prices. Kingston KC3000 2TB, some people like it, but I am not a huge fan of Kingston's firmware approach on that SSD (but Kingston did it so it is harder to notice its weakness unless you test that SSD for a really long period of time).

My advice is either buy great ones or buy cheap ones. Avoid these in the middle ones (coz. they do cut corners or are dated so you need to decide how you are going to numb your brain - i.e. it is still PCIe gen 4 x4, it is still fast enough, factor in the heatsink to trick your brain). To be frank, 970 Evo Plus 2TB is probably already an overkill for most people.

Someone else will chime in, but if your m2 slot is laid flat on your motherboard then this double sided heatsink won’t fit I would think.

    • +1

Hi fellow oldie… As WhyAmicommenting mentions it's possible that a double sided heat sink may not fit depending if theres any smd's on the motherboard under the m.2…but Looking at a pic of the board if the m.2 that's free is the one below the gpu then as long as the gpu isn't some 3090ti/4090 behemoth it looks to be ok distance wise (to main pcie slot) … But I think there's a chance that the double sided heat sink may give you a bit of trouble… There's lots of ssd sales at the moment some even cheaper than this so maybe pick one without a heatsink and if required add a heatsink later.

      • Hi… yes it's the one below the GPU… Only running a 3070so not overly large… but just want a second M.2 drive but not sure if I need a heatsink or not ???

        • +1

If it’s secondary, I’d just buy a medium speed one without a heatsink. It probably won’t be working constantly.

        • +1

Yep I'd second this, cases also have better air flow than say the PS5 …so if it's not constantly in use it's not that likely you'll need a heatsink.

        • +1

Generally, it is good to have a heatsink (doesn't hurt), even though for Phison E16 based SSDs, that's mostly cosmetic.

If you really want to get it and is a bit concerned, just check with Amazon AU that if it is incompatible with your motherboard, you can return it and get your money back. Amazon AU's service at the moment is pretty good normally.
