I have this three pack. For prospective owners, keep in mind that you can't select the source node of each satellite for this model (which defeats the purpose of a mesh system)

Yep! Found this out after buying unfortunately. Have set it up in a star configuration and it works well enough, though.

        Oof! Deal breaker!

      • Yeah mine is a line config ffs :/

^ This! Made me stop trusting other tplink gear.

Does anyone know if it's only this model/set? Why is it even called "mesh"?

I saw some tips on forums to force a node to connect to the nearest node (instead of looking for the weakest signal from the base) by putting a cast iron pot on the base or something like that. Makes sense, yet ridiculous for a ~$400 set.

      • Does anyone know if it's only this model/set?

Not only this model. Many others too. I know X20 can't either. But the M4, M5, M9+, X50, X55 can select the source.

And yeah you can force it… I'll try that cast iron pot trick.

        • Let us know how that goes. I'd expect it to switch back to the base once the node sees it again (bc you can't keep that pot on). Or after a restart, power outage etc.

After getting the X20 the other week, I have come across another big security flaw - you have to use TPLink DDNS service and no other reputable ones are supposed by their routers. And they don't provide SSL in their DDNS service like other routers do which means you can never connect to your home server securely on HTTPS

      • This is not a security flaw, you should always have the SSL certificate on your target server not the router.
They added a VPN server, which is a far safer option to connect to your home server,

        • No VPN option on my X20 deco

          • @MKBHD: Update the firmware, then try More -> Advanced -> VPN Server
            v1.1.0 Rel. 48243
If not perhaps ask support for the firmware.

    • Edited.

    • I just got a 3pk of the x68 this week..If i have it set up close to a triangle formation sounds like it wouldn't be that bad?

      • That'll be fine. Just put the main one in the middle of the 2 shorter distances if it's physically possible.

        • Thanks for your response, unfortunately it's stuck at the front of the house where the internet port is.

@DaDiesel: Then yeah you'll have the same problem as my almost straight line topology where the main router has to be on the end unfortunately. It's not such a big problem if the signal to the main router from the furthest satellite is still strong tbh. My signal strength is weak yet I can still max out my NBN connection thankfully.

  • Can I have a suiggestion which one will be better for a 4 bedroom single floor home. Around 3 laptops and 10 small gadgets. 100MBPS NBN plan at home.
