Great prices, but ~24hrs++— to Japan just isnt worth it

Not to mention the very VERY VERY strict requirements for a 24 hour transit visa. You will need to have every single piece of printed paper in order otherwise you are deported.

      • What about the (linked) 144 hour transit visa? (I ask because I've not done it personally)

        • +1

Same principal, you will need to print out everything required and present them to a border official when arriving.

The border official will submit everything and call up a supervisor and ask to weather to grant the individual.

        • I did the transit visa back in 2013, when it was just beijing and shanghai. HKG-PVG-ICN.

Back then you need evidence of your onward flight from Shanghai booked and confirmed, a shanghai confirmed hotel and also your onward city hotel confirmed.

Not sure if there are any new or changed rules. Make sure you have it printed for your airline checkin to the chinese city as well.

          • @Coops1: The check in agent will also need to advise the transit port of passengers transiting visa free (72 or 144hrs depending on the city).

As always, have everything printed for China. Beautiful country but they make it very difficult as a foreigner to travel there (Visas, access to ewallets, use of apps, etc.).

        • Have just done this (144hr transit visa in Shanghai) two weeks ago, the process is straight forward if you have the right information, and it DOES NOT NEED to be printed but it helps.

The customer officer was happy to see the hotel and flight details on my phone, and will take a photo of it.

If you are staying with relatives, you will need to provide their details and YOU must check into the local police station to report your stay. This is not required for Hotel accommodation as they will check you in on your behalf (with your passport).

WeChat is required for customs, but it doesn't have to be your own, just take photo of your barcode once you complete the form.

Cash is starting to be rare there, so prepare to use WeChat, Travel Card, or local cards and local apps (Good luck getting a taxi without the DiDi app).

      • better have your wechat and social media in order too

    • Note that some legs can be as short as 16 hours,, eg this flight comes back to MEL via Shanghai with just under 2 hours in Shanghai airport.

      • Shanghai airport quite big, 2 hours is just enough if you lucky, otherwise you need to run and still be late to the door.

    • Agree. Would need to be much cheaper.

Check how insane MU5735 crash is and still investigating the reasons

You would likely need a travel PCR Covid test for this flight which effectively adds $150 to the price.

    • +2

Incorrect, very minimal countries require it now. Even more so that MEL testing clinic has now shut its doors.

      • -1

I'm not sure China bases it's entry decisions on what Melbourne Airport does.

        • Nothing to do with Melbourne Airport. Got to do with customers testing. No requirements means the business is no longer viable to keep open, because surprise surprise, no one needs a test done.

    • it is only rapid test required since 29/04/2023.

      • +1

Good to know. I travelled to China in March when it was still required.

God forbid your flight from China to Japan/Australia gets cancelled and you’ll be stuck in the airport.

NEVER EVER transit through a country where you cannot visit without a visa (or visa on arrival).

    • Yeah, this is super risky. Here is a reminder

  • -7

    你已经被中国政府锁定
Do not risk yourself being tested positive with weed.
You will be charged with years (blood result remains 7 days at least after you’ve had it)

    • +1

Why does it have to bother me if I never tried any drugs in my life ?

      • +1

Actually smart traveller advises that there is random drug testing and people may come up positive even if they haven’t used the drug https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/asia/china I don’t think this would be put on a gov website unless there was reasonable evidence of it occurring.

  • Is there any after mid-June

    • +1

not for this price, I searched through to next April :/

      • Do you know if longer stay in Shanghai (say 14 days)is allowed with these discounted tickets ?

  • Transitting via a communist dictatorship, no thankyou.

    • +3

      I support your thinking, dude.
The more people like you, the cheaper tickets for people like me.

      • It doesn’t bother me so much that China is a communist country with an authoritarian government. I would however be concerned as an Australian travelling through China at this time. Whilst the majority of people will be fine, you don’t know if you’ll be the unlucky one that is made an example of, have your visa canceled, be detained etc. Especially as someone without the language and cultural knowledge. China Australia relations aren’t amazing at the moment.

Your thoughts will change in the gulags

  • -1

China Eastern? Then it will technically be a 0.5 one way or 1.5 return flight. Not worth the risk.

  • -1

Do you need to review all your social media post past and present to make sure you did not say anything that will vaguely piss off the CCP (like this comment) before buying the ticket in case you disappear at Shanghai / Beijing airport (since the new law come into effect)?
And bring a brand new / hard-resetted existing mobile just in case?

  • prefer using other airlines, do you have any other offer?
