    Thanks OP

A 30W charger isnt a 'bargain' at $32, whatever brand it is

    • -5

This isnt some Samsung branded charger lol and its less than half price. I bought

      • -2

Yeah boy, Apple is da best..
        Way better than 'some Samsung'

Just thinking about your post make my brain hurt.

Look at reviews and teardown of these chargers. The Apple chargers are better quality. They have a few dollars more expensive components in them but apparently those components make a difference in quality according to boffins who care about this kind of thing. Better capacitors or whatever, I dunno I'm not an electrical charger boffin. They also look nicer imo, the design is better and they are heavier too https://youtu.be/OA1vmN-skXo?t=5

At -54% or a saving of $32 from RRP of $69, I’d say this is a bargain for those wanting this particular genuine Apple adapter.

      • +5

$59 at jb hifi which would be the same as apple store so would be RRP. $29 for the 20W. If you want genuine this is a good deal either way.

      • -2

I'm just pointing out that there are a lot of better chargers out there for less money. Feel free to continue buying overpriced Apple stuff! Literally nobody is going to believe a $69 RRP for a phone charger. $69 is laptop charger territory - you can get a genuine Dell charger for less than this

This is a good price for an Apple fast charger. They are good quality, compare a teardown to a cheap Samsung 30W charger.

      • do they compare it with belkin or cygnett?

        • I dunno about internals, but they feel better quality. I bought both those brands in a pinch while holidaying and they don't feel as high quality, in weight or design.

          • @AustriaBargain: It depends, if your devices are all Apple, then stick with Apple chargers. If you have mixture of devices, then it gets tricky because Apple simply won't code their chargers to work well with Android devices. The USB-PD portion will still work (with PDO), but any QuickCharge 2/3 fallback is certainly not going to happen. 5V higher current charging could also be a bit iffy when using an Apple charger with an android device. The third party chargers are likely to use a chipset that supports a wider range of charging protocols to appeal to more people.

      • Could you please provide a link to support your claim?

I currently use a Samsung USB C PD 3.0 PPS 25W to charge my iPhone 13 which I purchased from the TGG Commercial for $18

        • Well in reality even a cheap charger from Aliexpress will do you fine. But sometimes they do fail, plus it's nice to have nice things.

          • @AustriaBargain: Question, do you have the link to Samsung 30W charger? I am trying to find it. When did Samsung release such a charger?

While we know the Apple 30W charger, being discounted at this price, is a good deal, it is not technically fair to compare this charger with Samsung 25W charger. The Samsung 25W charger is more a competitor to Apple's 20W charger. Honestly though, Apple's 20W and 18W chargers do have some cost cutting done to it. They are not in the same class as Apple 30W charger.

        • It's hard to get an objective view on this as most people tend to either slightly pro Apple or pro Android. I will try to be objective but below is still my personal opinion. I did a quick test.

          • Apple 20W charger, on Apple devices, generally enters fast charging mode consistently faster than Samsung 25W charger (about 1 to 1.5 seconds faster).
          • There is one occasion where the Samsung 25W charger won't go into 9V fast charging mode for at least 10 seconds (and the charging mode is in 5V, though still at around 8W).
          • When fast charging is engaged, Samsung 25W charger at times charges at a higher wattage than Apple 20W charger.
          • My Apple 30W is at my parents' place. I only have the 20W charger with me.

With USB-C charging, every component in the chain is coded so Apple does know which charger and cable you are using. Samsung 25W charger is a cost effective charger, but as I mentioned in my other comment, Samsung and Apple don't make their chargers work well with each other. They do adhere to USB-C/PD 2.0 so they will work.

As for teardown reviews, I quickly browse through both Samsung 25W and Apple 30W reviews. Design wise, the Samsung 25W is fine (better than 3rd party chargers), but components used in the Apple 30W charger are better (Japanese and Taiwanese capacitors for example). That said, I would nitpick Apple 30W charger. Why use Japanese capacitors in all but one? Why not just use all Japanese capacitors? Anyway, Samsung 25W uses Chinese capacitors. Note: in the newer Apple chargers (i.e. Apple 35W dual port chargers), Apple also use Chinese capacitors from the same manufacturer Samsung uses. "Cost" is a factor, even for Apple. The 30W Apple charger, at this price, is a good choice. I am assuming Apple has not swapped components or introduced new batches (Apple has done that to their 61W chargers).

Personally, I don't mix chargers so I use Apple chargers on Apple devices, Samsung chargers on Samsung devices. For cost, Samsung 25W charger on Apple devices is still a better choice than other 3rd party chargers. Samsung do need to ensure Samsung chargers are good enough for Galaxy phones so they cannot be junk like some Apple fanboys want you to believe. However, if you can, do consider using Apple chargers for Apple devices.

The main appeal of this charger is the plug can be changed. It can be quite handy if you do travel overseas. Apple's lower cost chargers no longer have swappable plug.

At this price, it is generally a no brainer for Apple users (that's why it sold out so quickly). For Android users, however, it is not as clear cut. Fundamentally, Apple and Android camps don't play nice. Samsung opted for PPS for example. Another thing is that this charger doesn't work well with ROCK 5 Model B due to not supporting 15V.

One annoying thing about Apple USB-C chargers is there are too many of them and too many batches (18W, 20W, 29W, 30W, 35W, 61W, 67W, 87W, 96W, 140W). The 15V support, for example, appears only in the later batches of 61W and 87W chargers (and some of the newer models since then). That's the thing with USB-C chargers. New standards and more voltage support keep coming up. Don't be surprised if Apple introduces another new one or two for iPhone 15 and 15 Pro.

While Apple chargers are generally good quality, the approach of 18W then 20W, 29W then 30W, 61W then 67W is a mess and milking customers.

      JFC 😂
I'm way out of date with Apple product knowledge 😂

    • Are the different Apple usb-c chargers all universally compatible?

Like an Apple 140w usb-c charger won't damage a MB/MBA or Bose 700 headphones for example?

      • +2

i use my apple usb c charger to charge microsoft surface pro and my oppo phone, fast and no issues

      • +1

Yeah - I've used that specific charger on quite a few different devices. Eg. MBA, Steam Deck, phone, Quest, etc.

      • Short answer: yes for Apple devices. Hint: no battery can constantly charge at 140W, once it is 80% charged, it is dangerous to fast charge it with high wattage.

All proper USB-C / PD chargers need to support 5V and the device, the cable, and the charger negotiate voltage and current to use constantly. So far, Apple devices do allow dumb cables when charging (i.e. cables without e-marking chip) because first iteration of USB-C capable Macbook Pros were introduced when USB PD 3.0 standard is not finalised yet. The big question mark is will iPhone 15 onwards enforce USB PD 3.0 (i.e. e-marked cable must be used) and whether Apple has any other rules it intends to apply (i.e. only whitelisted cables get fast charging).

The 140W USB-C charger is Apple's first GaN charger, but Apple didn't go crazy to shrink the size of that charger unlike most of the other GaN chargers. However, that will most likely change for smaller Apple chargers in the future. The 140W charger is also Apple's first USB-C PD 3.1 charger. For Macbook Pro 16 inch M1/M2 Pro/Max, to get above 100W charging, an USB PD 3.1 charger must be used and the MagSafe USB PD 3.1 compatible cable must also be used.

Universally compatible, for Apple devices, in general, yes, but that's due to Apple knows all the chargers it produced and can use alternative voltage offered by older chargers if required. However, as I mentioned before, Apple don't and won't care about non-Apple devices. While those devices will most likely have similar capability to use alternative voltages (if the Apple charger doesn't have their preferred voltages), some of the cheaper devices are not that flexible (i.e. ROCK 5 Model B).

  • OOS at Catch now too.

  • Any thoughts about the Samsung USB C 25W PD 3.0 PPS sold for $ 18 at Amazon or TGG Commercial

    • I use it for my android phones. It's a typical Samsung charger, in the sense that, it is geared towards Samsung devices.

In USB-C/PD 2.0 PDO, you only get 5V and 9V. To be fair, Apple 20W charger is the same (you get bare minimum basically). 5V 3A is supported (USB-C standard) so that's good for Pi 4. PS5 DualSense charging works. The 5V is not coded for old Apple devices (so you would only get basic fallback slow charging if the Apple device doesn't support USB-PD; all iPhones which support USB-C charging do support PD). Anyway, best to use Apple chargers for Apple devices. Samsung's 5V BC 1.2 DCP is supported for old Samsung devices.

USB-PD PPS is supported, but it isn't really for the highest PPS charging. PPS : 3.3-5.9 V (3A) or 3.3-11.0 V (2.75A). QC4 is also supported.

Nothing special about this charger, it is primarily designed for Samsung devices, would work okay for Android devices. As usual, codes to support old Apple devices are intentionally left out. Just like Apple would intentionally not support Samsung charging protocols. It's a cost effective charger from Samsung. Nothing special about it.
