QNAP TS-431K 4 Bay Turbo NAS Alpine AL-214 Quad Core 1.7GHz CPU 1GB RAM $258.75 (was $575)

QNAP TS-462-2G 4-Bay Diskless NAS Celeron N4505 2-Core 2.9GHz 2GB $373.05 (Was $829) OOS

Mwave have a couple of QNAP NAS heavily discounted. I could add 10 of each to my cart so there should be enough stock.

I'm not familiar with QNAP so I'll do my best to find some reviews.

  • How does this fare against something like a Synology?

    • I have not had a Synology but my Qnap 453A has been ROCK SOLID for years. And they have regular updates.

Don't you think that this price is dirt cheap though? Like if you buy one you could sell it for more later on?

        • I really do want to buy one but I already have two 4 bay NAS. If my circumstances were a little different I'd just grab one just in case/to try.

      I have a 2 Bay Synology DS220+ and a 4 bay QNAP TS-453Be

I feel the OS for Synology is more user friendly and more mature compared to QNAP. I use the synology one for backup purposes and QNAP as a media server.

In terms of performance couldnt fault either of them!

If you use this as a local NAS, then it's fine, but don't go online with this, QNAS = awful security for online.

    • Good to know thanks. I'm way too paranoid to allow outside access to my stuff.

    • As a rule of thumb, even for my Synology, I don't open up the online but what I've done is just enable the access via VPN.

    • I was going to ask about if security has improved.

      Yes, got the same… :-(

  • Showing as out of stock for the TS-462-2G

  • +1

Nah, looks like they fixed it

  • Basket showing $829

    • Yeah, looks like the party is over. Wonder if it was a price error.

Edit: I guess they could have set aside X number for the promotion or something like that.

      • i suspect an active MwaVe VIP is required

        • i suspect an active MwaVe VIP is required

No I managed to check out with the promo price successfully. Mwave has been pretty competitive with genuine offers lately. Check out all previous Mwave post in OzB.

          • @cloudie9: Good to know some people grabbed one. : D

        • I'm not an VIP or anything and that was the price that was showing. Even that price on staticice. Don't know exactly how staticice works though.

  • Price goes to full at checkout. Dang.

    • same here

I reckon someone on here bought a crap load of them to resell them :( .

    • +1

Hope not. $$$ does make people do crazy things.

The price was amazing though. Next best is $769 on staticice. I guess there could be cheaper than that elsewhere.

      • Considering the OP said there was plenty of stock when he tried and he mentioned he had tested out even 10 and another poster even said the price is so good, you can just buy it and resell it later. I reckon someone saw that and just went haywire for it.

        • +2

          I really hope not. That's so lame. : (

I just mentioned the 10 as sometimes Mwave deals get shunted to the forums as there isn't enough stock.

          • @ozbs25: Not your fault, you were trying to help people out by pointing out there is stock etc. Shame some people take advantage of that.

            • @lonewolf: I'm starting to think I should have just bought one and spent time in the doghouse……………………

              • @ozbs25: If you already had a QNAP even more reason to have bought it as always good to have a spare to through the drives into, if your main one died.

                • @lonewolf: I have a Synology and a WD Mycloud. I would have to buy more drives too. I would prefer to get another Synology I guess but at this price it was hard to ignore, but somehow I did. Spoke to my wife. She said I should have just got it. Rookie error…

    • I am buying it for my own, want to try out QNAP software as I've always been on Synology.

      • I buy mainly synology as they are way better in my opinion BUT Qnap are a good and i feel the next best option. Shame some of the other brands just seem to have disappeared / not very popular at all.

      • +1

Like I said to someone else, if my circumstances were different I'd get one just to see what they are like. I've got a Synology and a WD MyCloud already.

  • anybody else seeing the discounted price ?

    • +1

      not any longer
      $287.00 at MSY still

      • thanks for the tip , picked one up from msy

  • Does NAS make sense for anyone who maintains less than 2 TB?

    Option 1 - NAS + 2X 2TB drive(redundancy) = ~$400
    Option 2 - Google one cloud 2TB - $129 a year.

Surely the HDDs in NAS will have to be replaced every 5 years

    • +1

Depends on how you plan to access it. You can SSH/FTP/SMB/etc. to a NAS, your only option to access a Drive account is through Drive itself or rclone.
