OLDBLOCK

Made for the US, this export label white wine is made for the lover of full-bodied, rich, textural white wines.

Story: Like the five generations of family winemakers before her, Bec has always liked to do things a little bit differently, especially when it comes to producing interesting wines. A chip off the old block of one of Australia's most famous wine families, she's always been an advocate for the underdog and lesser-known varieties, just like this Chenin Blanc.
Most people aren't familiar with Chenin Blanc, but it's one of those varieties that is generally loved by anyone who's keen to give it a go. It's your perfect 'go-to' white wine any time of the year!

Nose: The fuller-bodied nose offers juicy aromas of Fuji apples, nashi pear, and passionfruit with a hint of floral jasmine notes.

Palate: The fuller palate is youthful with notes of apples, lime, and tropical fruits, complemented with a wonderful viscosity, great acidity and a long finish reminiscent of oaked-Chardonnay.

Cellaring: Drink now to 2024

Morning @MuddyClear. Great to see you again. My very own OzBargain stalker. Have you been sat by your phone waiting for me to post?
Your offering last week garnered a record -16 votes -> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/774331
Double from your offering the week before of -8 -> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/772920
      Have a great weekend Champion.
      Richard :-))

      • Think you'll find they are down another one Richard 😀

        • It's all very odd/worrying. RD :-)

      • Let's see if we can get Muddy to -32 this time!

        I'm doing my part.

        • Username checks out.

    • Genuinely want to know. Where's all your hate for bec hardy deals coming from?

      Is there something specific?

      • -3

If I were to take a stab it'd be their using the site for free advertising - ostensibly these are "export" wines that without fail end up being sold locally at an amazing discount, conveniently every few days. They're walking just inside the site rules (a la Airjo), but the frequency & language of the posts screams spam. Like Airjo, there seems to be a few fans, though the rep is getting a bit cocky & carrying on per above.

Where's all your hate for bec hardy deals coming from?

I wouldn’t use the word hate. That is a very strong word. I simply dislike the Wine Shed Sale “deals” of late as the vast majority of them are not genuine bargains as clearly indicated by the OzB voting system. As The Judge has pointed out it reeks of spam as it is posted every week or so.

        Is there something specific?

Yes, the marketing of export label wines now selling to the local market at heavily discounted prices on the regular appears disingenuous.

Their prices don’t truly reflect wholesale price as claimed, which you can gather by comparing prices with their actual real deals they had in the past. Those deals are extremely rare and have much higher votes!

To me the Wine Shed Sale has evolved into a model of using the OzB platform to flog their wines at above wholesale price under the guise of heavily discounted export labels. And given RD’s responses I would say he is quite cocky about it too.

My advice to RD would be to stop spamming so frequently or start posting actual deals that we can proudly vote on with high popularity. I doubt that will happen as the new model is more profitable - definitely not a deal though.

        You can upvote me now.

        • @TheJudge @MuddyClear there is nothing i can say that will alter your opinions. Muddy your price analysis is just plain wrong.

Let's look at the pricing on this particular deal. Export FOB price is AUD6/btl (as an FOB price it is not subject to WET or GST).

The price here on this deal is $7.42/btl. Less 10% for GST, Less WET, less shipping and you actually come to less that the FOB price.

Re the frequency of posting. We make around 500,000 bottles of wine each year across three brands. Around 40% of the business is export (coincidentally, only around 20% of our revenue is DTC via our own website) and we make a fair few wines for Costco in the US, some of which get posted here either before or after a ship leaves.

As always, the full story of what the Wine Shed Sale is and how it came about over twelve years ago is here -> https://bechardy.com.au/blogs/blog-news/what-is-the-wine-she…

Re Upvotes, if you go back and have a look since January 2023, it appears to me that the only wine deals that have really flown were the Get Wines Direct $32/doz type deals and we all know where that ended.

Are we still making a profit at these prices? Of course we are.

Still don't let fact gets in the way of your persistent negative commentary.

            • @MuddyClear: The average is an average. Commercial styled wines from irrigated regions will come in lower than that. Wines from premium regions higher.

Get Wines Direct &. Boozebud won’t be spamming you any more they went under.

Hardly ‘failed’. If we had that much failure we’d be out of business. It’s why we’ve also been recognized at State and Federal level for excellence in exporting over a number of years. That success is a matter of public record. Again, try facts.

I’m beginning to feel a bit sorry for you with your obsession.

                • @MuddyClear: $18/btl inflated? Haha. Ok.
Of course it’s above the average. Lots of wines are. It’s why it’s an average.
As I said it’s a matter of public record of the success of the business over multiple years in the export space. Google can help you out.
Do you really not have better things to do on a Sunday? Kids? Family? All very bizarre.
                  Back to the facts Muddy.
                  Cheers! RD :-)

                    • @MuddyClear: Definitely know the numbers and certainly more than you. Your numbers are just plain wrong.
Knowing the numbers is why we run a successful, profitable wine business with State and Federal accolades for success.
No ‘made-up’ or ‘failed’ wines. Again google will help you out.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday waiting for my reply haha. :-))

                        • @MuddyClear: Intrigued for you to demonstrate your numerical prowess with how my numbers are wrong.
And so now the complaint is ‘spam’.
Again nothing ‘made up’. 170 years, six generations of reality.
                          Keep coming. I’m enjoying this.
                          Cheers! RD :-))

                            • @MuddyClear: No depth to any argument. All bluster. No facts.
Again I’ll ask, please outline your pricing calculations.
So a second complaint about ‘spamming’. Happy for you to report the deals for spamming.
@alvian is there anyone specifically we can refer @MuddyClear to?
Hope you found at least a little time in your weekend without worrying about my posts! .:-)))

                                • -1

@MuddyClear: Let’s ask the moderators if it’s spam.
I’ve self reported my own post on your behalf. Happy for their view and adjudication.
Cocky? Not really. Just enjoying myself. :-))

                                  • @RD ADL: Perhaps a moderator will tell you to simply answer the concerns buyers might have on your deal. Something you clearly having trouble with. Something to hide?

                                        • @MuddyClear: Let's try again.

We run an export business. Around 40% of our revenue is from export. Those principal export markets for us are currently US, Canada, Indonesia.

To service those export markets in the last twelve months I've travlled to: UK (3 times), Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore (twice), Germany, Malaysia, Vietnam. Last year I spent around 80 mights overseas. In 2023, that is already 42 nights with planned trips later this year to Indonesia, Canada, Hong Kong and China.

Our record of exporting is a matter of public record. Here's some recent links to help:

In respect of Spam, I have reported this post myself to the moderators. Happy for you to do the same.

In respect of false and/or misleading advertising, you can report that to the ACCC. More info on that here -> https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/advertising-and-promotions….

                                          Hope all that helps.

                                          • @RD ADL: I am not questioning that you export wine. I am questioning why so many of your export label wines are getting advertised locally on OzBargain. Again, given the frequency at which you post these deals, every week or so, it is reasonable to question if these advertised wines were even made for the overseas market. You have avoided answering this question time and time again, referring me to google or providing links that don’t address my concerns.

If Ozbargain and ACCC were to investigate this issue are you able to verify these wines you try to sell here were made for the overseas market? I also ask because the way you advertise them reeks of spam and possibly false advertising.

I think there is something strange going on. I am now leaving this discussion as I am getting nowhere with you.

                                            • @MuddyClear: Hi @MuddyClear.
"Why are so many advertised locally on OzBargain?" I've answered that first question for you many times and the answer, again, is here.
                                              https://bechardy.com.au/blogs/blog-news/what-is-the-wine-she…

And yes it is perfectly reasonable to question frequency. We currently have around 41 different SKUs (excluidng multiple vintages) most of which are exported to a greater or lesser degree. We do not make wines exclusively for the domestic market. It doesn't make sense to do that as the domestic market here is so small compared to the size of global markets.

With 41 current SKUs, other wines specifcally made for distributors (OEM or white label product) during the year, various mixed packs or repeat SKUs, there is easily enough opportunities for posts to OzB.

And yes, of course, it can de verified. The export of wines from Australia is regulateded by Wine Australia and each export transaction is subject to regulatory approval.

                                              • -1

                                                @RD ADL:

And yes, of course, it can de verified. The export of wines from Australia is regulateded by Wine Australia and each export transaction is subject to regulatory approval.

How do you verify wines you allocate for the local market, which you advertise with the export label on it?

                                                • @MuddyClear: Ok, so again, Australia has laws around wine production, labelling, blending, declared alcohol levels etc. Certain overseas jurisdictions vary those rules or have their own requirements.
Sales and distribution is not a black and white game as you might think or seem to suggest.
Whilst we're not required to verify what you're suggesting, it would be easy to achieve by taking the total number of bottles produced (recorded at the time of bottling), less the volume exported over the lifetime of the product, giving the balance to the domestic market.
We don't allocate by market on most bottlings as sales experience each vintage might not be uniform each year and distributors models are different in different countries.Where we do allocate it tends to be done on more premium SKUs (that don't get into the Wine Shed Sale) where supply might be limited (single vineyard wines for example).
The Wine Shed Sale is an outlet for the overs.

I'm more than happy to discuss with you on the phone but I really must draw a close here. I've tried to answer everything you've asked of me. As always, please feel very welcome to call me on 0433 166 181 if you wish to really understand. Or perhaps you can come down to Cellar Door and I'll show you around and we can discuss further there and give you the insight you seem to need. I don't need to do that but am happy to in the interests of transparency for the broader OzB community.

Alternatively, I'd encourage you to take your matter to the relevant body now, be it SA Trading Standards, ACCC or OzBargain themselves (who coincidentally haven't yet marked the post as Spam).

I'll use this thread to you refer you to for any future posts you might wish to make on deals in the future as it's a great resource we've built for anyone with the same queries.

                                                  All the best

                                                  Richard

@RD ADL: It’s been quite the process to get to this point, which is strange in itself. I will let the OzBargain community and other groups decide whether everything is above board. Thanks

  • +3

I've always found Bec Hardy wines to be exceptional valueb on these ozbargain posts. I don't know this grape and already have enough white for this time of year but would have otherwise clicked buy!

    • +3

      Very much agreed.

One thing that might tempt me to indulge even more of their sales would be an offering with 2 x different six packs. Previous orders have always come in two seperate boxes of six identical wines, so featuring two different six packs could be done fairly easily, I’d have thought. Especially for varieties like this which I’ve never tried before, six bottles of this plus six bottles of a Sauv Blanc, Pinot Gris or red variety would be welcome, and mitigate against the possibility of not warming to twelve bottles of the new drop. Just a thought…

      • +2

Strongly agree regarding the 2 different six pack idea. Especially with new releases and less familiar wines like this one.

        • +3

          @chewbot I'll lock it in :-)

      • +3

@UncleRico Yes, we can very much do that - thanks for the suggestion. I'll put one in the mix in the coming weeks :-)

        • Awesome. Hope you pick some good varieties, since I’m obligated to grab a pack now that you’ve responded so positively. At this price, there’s very little risk. Cheers!

          • @UncleRico: @UncleRico Don't have so many unusual varieties these days (we've left that to Bec's Dad) but I'll see what I can do :-) Enjoy the weekend. :-)

            • @RD ADL: Don’t sweat it - at this price, six bottles of virtually anything is a nice sample pack to push the boat out on familiar or untried offerings. I’m sure you’d move more units of more familiar offerings where there’s some name recognition, so will trust in your judgement to see what you can put together. I look forward seeing what you can procure in coming weeks - and hearing how the resident Bec Hardy guzzler rates them! Thanks.

    • @sicklama Thanks for the kind words. Have a great weekend. RD :-)

  • It looks like eligible for Amex Discover SA offer if the card is accepted.

    • They aren’t one of the participating brands for the Amex offer.

      • @bennybaubles thanks for clearing that one up. To be fair had me stumped. @Neoika apologies we don't seem to be a part of it. Cheers! RD :-)

  • +1

Lots of trackers on their website

As a commercial entity, of course, we employ the tools we can to build a better business. :-)

  • I have enjoyed all your wines that I've ordered so far. Happy to give this one a go too!

    • @StevePER Thanks Steve. Hope you enjoy. Cheers! RD :-)

  • Ah a Bec Hardy deal.

    +1 for Richard. - 1 for Muddy.

    Now the weekend can start.

BTW - ripped into some BH Merlot yesterday. Delicious.

    • @Miso I've not looked at that tine for a while. Glad you enjoyed. Cheers! RD :-)

  • Hi Richard,

Is this chenin blanc on the drier or sweeter side?

    • +3

Hi @Skinny Mocha. Drier, fuller bodied style. :-)

      • Perfect, thanks! I'll give it a go :)

  • Drier & full bodied so definitely worth a try

  • Reporting back - we liked it!

    • @srr always great to hear. Glad you enjoyed. Cheers! RD :-)
